Lannea velutina is a traditional herbal remedy used to treat various diseases, including hypertension (HBP). Herbal medicines are affordable, and some have minimal side effects;they are rich in bioactive components that encourage prevention and treatment. This work uses appropriate experimental paradigms to investigate the phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and acute oral toxicity of L. velutina trunk bark extracted in water, methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and hexane. According to a high-performance thin-layer chromatography profile, this shrub’s bark contains sterols, saponosides, flavonoids, and tannins. Compared to ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts, the methanol extract had the highest total phenolic (607.06 ± 0.6 mg GAE/g DW), flavonoid (20.97 ± 0.23 mg QE/g DW), and condensed tannins (194.50 ± 0.75 CE/g DW) content. The methanol extract displayed the highest antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capability assay (IC50 = 8.59 g/mL;AAI = 4.66) compared to the other extracts. It exhibited antiradical action comparable to that of Trolox (IC50 = 15.16 g/mL), ascorbic acid (IC50 = 11.94 g/mL), and catechin (IC50 = 11.64 g/mL). The connection between flavonoid concentration and hydrophilic antioxidant activity was robust (r = 0.997). Mice were used to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous extracts using guidelines 425 of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. All tested extracts have an estimated LD50 greater than 2000 mg/kg body weight. The truncal bark of L. velutina could be an alternative source for HTA management.

Impacts of Agricultural Activities on Land Degradation along the Bomboré River in Burkina Faso

Land along the Bomboré River in the rural commune of Mogtédo in Burkina Faso is experiencing degradation. The explanatory causes of this degradation constitute the subject of this study. To do this, a survey was conducted among agricultural producers deployed along the watercourse. Soil profiles were described and samples were taken to analyze pH, soil organic carbon, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and texture. The RUSLE model approach based on landstat8 OLI/TIRS and SRTM satellite images dated December 17, 2021 with fairly good radiometric, spatial, and spectral resolution was used to calculate the land loss rate. In terms of results, the potentially irrigable areas that spread out on both sides of the banks of the river cover 209.23 ha with a perimeter of 6.16 km. The number of irrigators is 26 producers and they grow 17.92 ha of vegetables. Soil analyzes indicate the presence of a moderate acid on the vertisol with a pH between 5.57 and 5.86. On the depth 0 - 30 cm of the horizon, the color of the horizons ranges from 5YR4/2 on the talweg and on the right bank to 7.5YR3/2 on the left bank and presents no risk of salinity because the electrical conductivity measured is less than 1dS/cm. The diagnosis of hydromechanical equipment shows that producers use 46 motor pumps for irrigation, of which 15 motor pumps run on gasoline and 31 motor pumps on butane gas with a ratio of 1.7 motor pumps per producer. The number of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes used by producers in combination with a motor pump gives an average of 44 per farmer. In terms of mineral fertilization, the gross doses used by producers are 415.53 kg/ha of NPK and 201.55 kg/ha of urea, while the quantities of phytosanitary products are 3.99 l/ha of pesticides and 1.42 l/ha of herbicides. Agricultural activities emit about 222,436.66 kgCO2eq into the atmosphere, whose emissions from motor pumps represent 84.52% of these total emissions. Obesity is a chronic condition characterised by excess body fat that leads to increased body weight. One of the most effective ways to treat obesity is to use appetite suppressants to reduce food intake. This study aimed to evaluate in vivo reduction of food intake and weight gain caused by Parkia biglobosa (Pb) fruit pulp. Twenty-four healthy NMRI mice divided into four groups were used for the experiment. Group 1, considered the negative control, received distilled water. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were administered daily with 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Pb fruit pulp powder suspension, respectively. The reduction in food intake was assessed in two phases: acute food intake for one day (24 h) and long-term food intake for seven weeks. Nutrient parameters and phenolic compounds in Pb fruit pulp were quantified. The results showed that Pb fruit pulp had a significant effect on reducing acute food intake. At a dose of 250 mg/kg, Pb had the best activity in reducing acute food intake, with an overall reduction rate of approximately 47.98% ± 1.17% compared to the control. Repeated daily administration inhibited food intake with all three doses for 13 days compared to control. Food intake was significantly decreased for up to 31 days by taking a 100 mg/kg dose of Pb (p = 0.0174). Weight gain was significantly lower (p = 0.0003) in mice treated with 100 mg/kg Pb than in controls at the end of 7 weeks. According to the nutritional composition study, Pb fruit pulp contains an abundance of total carbohydrates (68.81% ± 0.32%) and crude fiber (14.35% ± 0.21%). This study demonstrated that Pb fruit pulp effectively reduces food intake in healthy mice. Pb pulp’s richness in crude fiber and phenolic compounds makes it a potential aid in managing obesity.

Introduction: Diabetes is a serious public health problem requiring complex treatment. Numerous ethnopharmacological studies have reported the traditional use of Sclerocarya birrea in managing diabetic patients. This study aims to demonstrate, preclinically, the antidiabetic effects of the aqueous decoction of S. birrea trunk bark. Methods: Phytochemical analysis was performed by HPLC-MS. The effects of the extracts (Sb5 and Sb25) and 0.9% NaCl on the normal blood glucose levels of the animals were determined. Diabetes induction was performed intraperitoneally by administering a single dose of alloxan (150 mg/kg) in normoglycemic rats. The antidiabetic effects of the extracts (Allox + Sb5, Allox + Sb25) and glibenclamide (Allox + Glib5) were determined in Alloxan-induced diabetic animals for four weeks. Results: Interpretation of mass spectra obtained by HPLC-MS allowed the tentative identification of vanillic acid-4-sulfate and rhamnetin in Sb extract. Investigated doses of Sb extract showed an antidiabetic impact similar to the reference, glibenclamide, with a return to normal blood glucose in all treated rats only after 4 days of treatment. Furthermore, Sb extract treatments reduced weight loss in diabetic rats. Sb had no negative impact on the balance of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated the antidiabetic efficacy and, to some extent, the beneficial effects of Sb extract on Alloxan-induced diabetic rats’ health. Detection of antidiabetic phytochemicals such as vanillic acid-4-sulfate and rhamnetin would justify this pharmacological property of the aqueous decoction of S. birrea trunk bark.

Numerical Assessment of the Thermal Efficiency of a Concentrated Photovoltaic/Thermal (CPV/T) Hybrid System Using Air as Heat Transfer Fluid

In this paper, we propose a thermal model of a hybrid photovoltaic/thermal concentration system. Starting from the thermal balance of the model, the equation is solved and simulated with a MATLAB code, considering air as the cooling fluid. This enabled us to evaluate some of the parameters influencing the electrical and thermal performance of this device. The results showed that the temperature, thermal efficiency and electrical efficiency delivered depend on the air mass flow rate. The electrical and thermal efficiencies for different values of air mass flow are encouraging, and demonstrate the benefits of cooling photovoltaic cells. The results show that thermal efficiency decreases air flow rate greater than 0.7 kg/s, whatever the value of the light concentration used. The thermal efficiency of the solar cell increases as the light concentration increases, whatever the air flow rate used. For a concentration equal to 30 sun, the thermal efficiency is 0.16 with an air flow rate equal to 0.005 kg/s;the thermal efficiency increases to 0.19 with an air flow rate equal to 0.1 kg/s at the same concentration. An interesting and useful finding was that the proposed numerical model allows the determination of the electrical as well as thermal efficiency of the hybrid CPV/T with air flow as cooling fluid.

Clinical and Etiological Characteristics of Hemiplegia at the University Regional Hospital Center Ouahigouya

Objective: To describe the clinical and etiological characteristics of hemiplegia in the northern region of Burkina Faso. Methodology: This was transversal with a descriptive and analytical study of one hundred and ninety-six hemiplegic patients in charge of general medicine at the Ouahigouya Regional University Hospitalfrom November 2015 to November 2017. Results: The majority of patients had a brutal hemiplegia predominant on the right. The sample consisted mainly of male patients with a mean age of 58 years. High blood pressure was the main factor of vascular risk. The cerebrovascular accident (58.7%) was the main pathology diagnosed. Most patients received symptomatic management. Physiotherapy was performed in 29.6% of patients. The clinical outcome at discharge was marked by the persistence of hemiplegia in more than 90.8% of patients. There was an improvement in the average MIF score at the exit. Conclusion: The lack of computed tomography and neuro-resuscitation unit were the main factors limiting the management of hemiplegia in our context.

Bilateral Anterior Shoulder Fracture-Dislocation: About a Case

Bilateral anterior dislocations of the shoulder are rare lesions. They are even rarer when combined with a bilateral fracture of major tubercles. We report the case of a 28-year-old patient admitted to trauma emergencies after trauma by falling from the top of a stool. Clinical and radiographic findings revealed bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation associated with bilateral fracture of major tubercles. The patient was treated orthopedically by a reduction of dislocations under General Anesthesia, immobilization of the shoulders for 6 weeks followed by reeducation. The functional result after 12 months was satisfactory with a UCLA score of 30 points.

Mortality of Traumatic Injuries in Traumatological Emergencies of the Yalgado ouedraogo University Hospital Center in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

Background: Serious trauma is the main cause of death for people under 40 years old. According to the WHO, in 2002, nearly 1.2 million people died worldwide from road traffic injuries. The vast majority (90%) are from low and middle-income countries. The diagnostic performance, the quality of the treatments offered, and the optimization of trauma care channels, make it possible to improve the management of serious trauma. This is not always the case in our context of a country with limited resources. Objectives: The objective is o describe the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of premortal death in patients with traumatic injuries. Methods: This was a descriptive study with retrospective collection in the trauma emergency department of Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso). All patients who died on the ward while in the hospital or on arrival were included. Results: 192 deaths were listed. The annual mortality was 1.6%, the sex ratio was 6.1 and the average age was 36 years. Road traffic accidents were the main etiology: 163 deaths (85%). Factors for Postponement or Cancellation of Operating Programs Set in the Orthopedics-Traumatology Department of Yalgado Ouédraogo University Teaching Hospital in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

Objective: The purpose of this work was to study the factors of cancellations or postponement of regulated operating programs of the Orthopedic-Traumatology unit of Yalgado Ouédraogo University Teaching Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective descriptive study over a period of six months. All interventions postponed or canceled during the study period were included. Patients who died or were lost to follow-up before surgery were not included. Results and Comments: the postponement/ cancellation rate was 24.5%. Out of 83 operations cancelled, 72.3% of patients were under 50 years old [extreme 15 and 88 years old]. ASA classes I and II were dominant with 57% and 37% of patients canceled, respectively. There were more postponed interventions (67.5%) than definitive cancellations (32.5%). The causes found were avoidable in 68.7% of cases. The most common was the unavailability of labile blood products (57%), the lack of financial means (36%) and the absence of the patient (28%). The results of our study show that 53% of the causes of cancellations were related to the organization of the hospital. Conclusion: the cancellation rate of orthopedic surgeries remains high at Yalgado Ouédraogo University Teaching Hospital. Most of the causes of cancellations are potentially preventable and the vast majority of them are related to the organization of the hospital. Financial accessibility to care plays an important role in cancellations.
