In this work, four empirical models of statistical thickness, namely the models of Harkins and Jura, Hasley, Carbon Black and Jaroniec, were compared in order to determine the textural properties (external surface and surface of micropores) of a clay concrete without molasses and clay concretes stabilized with 8%, 12% and 16% molasses. The results obtained show that Hasley’s model can be used to obtain the external surfaces. However, it does not allow the surface of the micropores to be obtained, and is not suitable for the case of simple clay concrete (without molasses) and for clay concretes stabilized with molasses. The Carbon Black, Jaroniec and Harkins and Jura models can be used for clay concrete and stabilized clay concrete. However, the Carbon Black model is the most relevant for clay concrete and the Harkins and Jura model is for molasses-stabilized clay concrete. These last two models augur well for future research.

Antiseptic Efficacy of A Soap Made from Biosurfactants Isolated from Bacillus and lactobacillus against Pathogenic Bacteria

The aim of our study was to use a biosurfactant produced by Bacillus and lactobacillus isolates as an antiseptic in the formulation of local soap. A total of 60 isolates were characterized by microbiological techniques (30 Bacillus and 30 lactobacillus) and the ability to produce biosurfactants was demonstrated by a hydrocarbon emulsification index (E24). The emulsification indexes (E24) varied from 9% to 100% for Bacillus and from 33% to 100% for lactobacillus as well. The antagonistic assay showed that biosurfactants were able to inhibit the formation of biofilms and growth of pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhirium, Shigella boydii and Proteus mirabilis. The biosurfactant consortium (BioC) from Bacillus consortium and from lactobacillus was able to inhibit biofilm formation and the pathogens growth. The BioC was stable to alkaline pH and the temperatures stability of Biosurfactant was ranging from 50°C to 90°C. The soap was made by the cold saponification process using one biosurfactant consortium formulated. This soap has a pH of 10 and showed good cleaning power and good foam stability. Similarly, the soap showed good antiseptic power and disinfection power against all pathogens tested. Handwashing is critical to preventing disease transmission. The persistence of pathogens in waste water was evaluated. The BioS produced showed good disinfection power against all pathogens tested. The valor of reduction on the hands and in the waste water was significantly more than compared to the control soaps used. This soap could be used in the prevention, fighting, and treatment of bacterial and viral infections.

Chemical composition of the bark extracts of Coula edulis was investigated to find potential antioxidant,anti-termite and antifungal compounds which can find useful applications in the fields of food,nutraceuticals,cosmetics or *** screening revealed the presence of several groups of active molecules such as alkaloids,polyphenols,flavonoids,saponins and sterols and/or terpenes in the different *** phenols,condensed tannins and flavonoids contents corroborated phytochemical *** chromatographymass spectrometry(GC-MS)analysis revealed compounds in dichloromethane extract different from those obtained with all the other *** and trans-9-octadecenoic acids,as well as stigmasterol andβ-sitosterol have been identified as the major compounds in the dichloromethane *** obtained with acetone and toluene/ethanol mixture(2/1,v/v)indicated the presence of few amounts of fatty acids and sugars,catechin in small amount and huge amounts of phenolic acids like gallic and ellagic *** radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyle(DPPH)and the cationic radical 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS+)were used for evaluation of antioxidant properties of the different *** dichloromethane extracts had a very low antioxidant activity,while acetone and toluene/ethanol extracts presented EC50 values similar to those of catechin and BHT used as reference antioxidant *** of the different extracts of the bark of *** on fungal growth inhibition indicated better inhibition of the mycelium growth of brown rot fungi compared to white rot *** anti-termite activities were recorded with the aqueous extracts,while stronger activities were recorded with dichloromethane,acetone and toluene/ethanol extracts.

Socio-Demographic Profile of Patients Victims of Subaxial Cervical Spine Trauma at the University Hospital of Brazzaville (Congo)

Introduction: Traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCI) are a public health problem. Subaxial cervical spine trauma (SCST) is the most common. They are a source of neurological consequences that can affect the functional prognosis, but above all vital. The objective of this study was to describe the profile of patients with lower cervical spine trauma. Method: We carried out a cross-sectional and retrospective study over seven years, from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2021, in the multipurpose surgery department of the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville. We included all patients hospitalized for SCST, having performed at least one radiological examination. We excluded all patients whose records were incomplete. Results: We recorded 90 cases of SCST, and 60 cases met our selection criteria. The median age was 37 years, with the extremes of 6 and 83, the sex ratio of 3.6. The level of education was secondary in 45 cases (75%), and university in 13 cases (21.7%). Road traffic accidents accounted for 68.3% of cases, followed by falls in 16.7%. Motorcyclists were the most frequent victims (46.3%). Among the 60 patients in the series, three (5%) had health insurance. Conclusion: The SCST concerns subjects in their thirties, of the male sex. Road traffic accidents are the first cause, and mainly concern motorcyclists.

The aim of this study was to evaluate socio-demographic profile of adults admitted in emergency for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at the University Hospital of Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo. We performed a prospective study within a period of six months, into the surgical unit of the emergency department of the University Hospital of Brazzaville. A total of 2617 patients were recorded, among which 268 cases were TBI (10.25%) where 142 cases were sampled in our series. The average age was 36.7 ± 16.6 years. The sex ratio was 6.1. The TBI was mainly due to road accident in 121 cases (85.2%) described as follows: motorcycle accident about 48 cases (39.7%) and the pedestrian’s injuries about 42 (34.8%). In the majority of the cases, cautions were not taken by the drivers;during the case of the motorcycle accident, about 97.9% of the riders did not wear a helmet. The TBI remains a growing public health concern in the low-income countries, like in Africa. Measurements on the road traffic regulation are to be strengthened to reduce the growth of this silent epidemic.

Patterns of Acute Kidney Injury in a Medical Emergency Department in Sub-Saharan Africa

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common in community and a serious outcome in hospital setting. Despite the progress of dialytic and non-dialytic therapeutic means, its mortality remains high. Our objective was to contribute to a better knowledge of how AKI managed in an emergency medical ward in an African country located in the southern part of the Sahara. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from January 1 to December 31, 2019, conducted at the emergency department of the University Teaching Hospital of Bouake, on cases of AKI. Results: During the study period, we collected 221 cases of AKI out of a total of 1778 files giving a prevalence of 12.4%. The mean age was 54 ± 19 years. A male predominance with a sex ratio of 1.4 was observed. The main past histories were hypertension in 40.4%, cardiac disease in 16.9%, and diabetes in 14.3%. The patients in were classified in 63.8% of cases as stage I, in 22.1% as stage II and in 14.1% as stage III according to the AKIN criteria. AKI was functional in 93.2% of cases. Hemodialysis was indicated in 15 (6.8%) patients, but only 3 (1.4%) underwent it. The mortality rate was 45.2%. Factors associated with mortality were: creatinine level greater than or equal to 30 mg/l, sepsis and impaired vigilance. Conclusion: Acute renal failure was frequent in subjects under 60 years old. Its mechanism of occurrence is functional and therefore it can be prevented by vascular filling. The majority of patients were seen at AKIN Stage I. The outcome was favorable in more than one third of the cases and the mortality rate remains high.

An Assessment of Cardiovascular Functional Capacity of a Group of Chronic Heart Failure Patients Using the 6-Minute Walk Test in a Cameroonian Urban Setting

Background: Chronic heart failure is a public health problem worldwide. It has a high mortality rate and is accompanied by a decreased functional capacity and alteration of the quality of life. Objective: This study aimed to assess the cardiovascular functional capacity of a group of patients suffering from heart failure using the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the cardiology unit of Douala’s general hospital for 4 months. We included all eligible patients aged 18 years or more who had stable chronic heart failure and gave informed consent. Those who had an acute coronary syndrome (≤1 month), tachycardia (HR ≥ 120 bpm), high blood pressure (SBP ≥ 180 mmHg and/or DBP ≥ 100 mmHg) and reduced mobility due to orthopaedic reasons were excluded. A 6 MWT was done according to the American Thoracic Society guidelines. The 6 MWT result was considered poor for - 450 m and good for >450 m. Results: We recruited a total of 81 patients (61.7% women) with a mean age of 65.9 ± 10.6 years. The most frequent risk factor for heart failure was high blood pressure (77.8%), alcohol consumption(69.1%) and a sedentary lifestyle (53.1%). The left ventricular ejection fraction was mostly preserved (42.0%) or mildly altered (46.9). The 6 MWT results were poor in 55.6% of cases, average in 19.8% of cases and good in only 24.7% of cases. More than half (59.3%) of the participants perceived the effort as being difficult. The cardiovascular functional capacity was significantly associated with age, heart failure stage and physical activity (p Conclusion: Most patients suffering from chronic stable heart failure in the general hospital of Douala have poor cardiovascular functional capacity.

Background: Systemic inflammation has long been recognized as a precipitator of acute congestive heart failure(CHF). The impact of inflammation on prognosis in acute CHF, however, is unknown. Methods: This study evaluated the prognostic role of inflammation among 214 consecutive patients presenting with acute CHF to the emergency department. Patients were stratified according to C-reactive protein(CRP) levels determined on admission. The primary end point was all-cause mortality during 24-month follow-up. Results: The median CRP level was 13.0 mg/l, with an intertertile range of 6.0 to 25.0 mg/l. Initial and long-term outcomes were significantly different to the detriment of patients with higher CRP levels. Patients in the highest CRP tertile significantly more often required admission to the intensive care unit(33%vs 14%in patients in the first tertile, P=.028) and died inhospital(15%vs 2%in patients in the first tertile, P=.027). Cumulative 24-month mortality rates were 33.5%in the first, 42.4%in the second, and 53.6%in the third tertile(P=.0265 by log-rank test). After multivariate adjustment, CRP remained an independent predictor of death(hazard ratio 1.4, 95%CI 1.1-1.8 for each step up in tertile, P=.044). Conclusions: Inflammation is a significant and independent predictor of long-term mortality in patients with acute CHF.
