After more than 18 months of nearly flawless operation,the James Webb Space Telescope(JWST)continues to deliver amazement,making unexpected discoveries,adding new wrinkles to known phenomena,and calling into question long-held theories of how the universe works.“The instruments are working amazingly well,in essentially all cases better than expected,”said Garth Illingworth,professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California,Santa Cruz(CA,USA),and one of the three originators of the mission over three decades ago.“It has exceeded every one of its performance requirements,which is truly amazing when you think about how complex it is.”That complexity has included three decades of planning,design,and construction,followed by launch and maneuvering 1.5106 km from Earth to its second Lagrange(L2)orbit,unfolding and locking into position the 18 segments of its 6.5 m diameter main mirror,and deploying 8 motors,90 cables,and some 400 pulleys to unfurl its fragile sunshield[1,2].

Half a century—plus 37 seconds—after it was first introduced to the world,the leap second has been scheduled for *** 18 November 2022 at the General Conference on Weights and Measures(CGPM)outside of Paris,France,representatives of governments around the globe decided that astronomical time(known as UT1),which is determined by Earth’s rotation,will be allowed to diverge by more than one second from Coordinated Universal Time(UTC),which is based on the steady ticking of atomic clocks[1].While the change—not to be implemented until 2035—will go unnoticed by most people,it promises to simplify the timekeeping vital to services provided by a wide range of global industries,including transportation,defense,and finance.

Background:Home advantage(HA) is well documented in a wide range of team sports including association football(soccer).Although much attention has been paid to differences in the overall magnitude of HA between football competitions and across time,few studies have investigated HA at the team ***:A novel method of estimating HA for individual teams,based solely on home performance,was used to compare HA between the highest performing teams and countries in the Union of European Football Associations(UEFA) Champions League over a 10-year period(2003/2004 to 2012/2013).Away disadvantage(AD) was also estimated based on each team's performance away from *** regression analysis was used to estimate covariate adjusted HA and AD in terms of the percentage of goals scored at home(HA) and conceded away from home(AD).Results:When controlling for differences in team ability,HA did not vary significantly between the 13 selected *** was evidence(p < 0.1),however,of between-team variation in AD,ranging from 45%(away advantage) to 68%(away disadvantage).When teams were grouped into the 11 selected countries,both HA and AD varied significantly(p < 0.02) between countries:HA ranged from 52% for Turkish teams to 70%for English teams,while AD ranged from 52%(France) to 67%(Turkey).Conclusion:Differences in style of play and tactical approaches to home and away matches may explain some of the variation in HA and AD between teams from different countries.

Many states rely upon the Pennsylvania 1957 Gas Well Pillar Study to evaluate the coal barrier surrounding gas *** study included 77 gas well failure cases that occurred in the Pittsburgh and Freeport coal seams over a 25-year *** the time,coal was mined using the room-and-pillar mining method with full or partial pillar recovery,and square or rectangle pillars surrounding the gas wells were left to protect the *** study provided guidelines for pillar sizes under different overburden depths up to 213 m(700 ft).The 1957 study has also been used to determine gas well pillar sizes in longwall mines since longwall mining began in the 1970 *** original study was developed for room-and-pillar mining and could be applied to gas wells in longwall chain pillars under shallow ***,under deep cover,severe deformations in gas wells have occurred in longwall chain ***,with a better understanding of coal pillar mechanics,new insight into subsidence movements induced by retreat mining,and advances in numerical modeling,it has become both critically important and feasible to evaluate the adequacy of the 1957 study for longwall gas well *** this paper,the data from the 1957 study is analyzed from a new perspective by considering various factors,including overburden depth,failure location,failure time,pillar safety factor(SF),and floor *** pillar SF and floor pressure are calculated by considering abutment pressure induced by full pillar recovery.A statistical analysis is performed to find correlations between various factors and helps identify the most significant factors for the stability of gas wells influenced by retreat *** analyzing the data from the 1957 study,the guidelines for gas well pillars in the 1957 study are evaluated for their adequacy for roomand-pillar mining and their applicability to longwall *** modeling is used to model the stability of gas wells by quantifying the mining-induced s
