Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a highly conserved process that has been well characterised in embryogenesis. studies have shown that the aberrant activation of EMT in adult epithelia can promote tumour metastasis by repressing cell adhesion molecules,including epithelial (E)-cadherin. Reduced intracellular adhesion may allow tumour cells to disseminate and spread throughout the body. A number of transcription proteins of the snail superfamily have been implicated in EMT. These proteins have been shown to be over-expressed in advanced gastrointestinal (GI) tumours including oesophageal adenocarcinomas,colorectal carcinomas,gastric and pancreatic cancers,with a concomitant reduction in the expression of E-cadherin. Regulators of EMT may provide novel clinical targets to detect GI cancers early,so that cancers previously associated with a poor prognosis such as pancreatic cancer can be diagnosed before they become inoperable. Furthermore,pharmacological therapies designed to inhibit these proteins will aim to prevent local and distant tumour invasion.

The endoplasmic reticulum forms the first compart- ment in a series of organelles which comprise the secretory pathway, it takes the form of an extremely dynamic and pleomorphic membrane-bounded network of tubules and cisternae which have numerous different cellular functions. In this review, we discuss the nature of endoplasmic reticulum structure and dynamics, its relationship with closely associated organelles, and its possible function as a highway for the distribution and delivery of a diverse range of structures from metabolic complexes to viral particles.

Botanic gardens around the world maintain collections of living plants for science, conservation, education, beauty and more. These collections change over time-in scope and content-but the predicted impacts of climate change will require a more strategic approach to the succession of plant species and their landscapes. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has recently published a 'Landscape succession strategy'for its Melbourne Gardens, a spectacular botanical landscape established in 1846. The strategy recognizes that with 1.6 million visitors each year, responsibility for a heritage-listed landscape and the need to care for a collection of 8500 plant species of conservation and scientific importance, planting and planning must take into account anticipated changes to rainfall and temperature. The trees we plant today must be suitable for the climate of the twenty-second century. specifically, the strategy sets out the steps needed over the next twenty years to transition the botanic garden to one resilient to the climate modelled for2090. The document includes a range of practical measures and achievable(and at times somewhat aspirational) targets. Climate analogues will be used to identify places in Australia and elsewhere with conditions today similar to those predicted for Melbourne in 2090, to help select new species for the collection. Modelling of the natural and cultivated distribution of species will be used to help select suitable growth forms to replace existing species of high value or interest. Improved understanding of temperature gradients within the botanic garden, water holding capacity of soils and plant water use behaviour is already resulting in better targeted planting and irrigation. The goal is to retain a similar diversity of species but transition the collection so that by 2036 at least 75% of the species are suitable for the climate in 2090. Over the next few years we hope to provide 100% of irrigation water from sustainable water sources, and

Quick response research conducted by social scientists in the aftermath of a disaster can reveal important findings about hazards and their impacts on *** to collect perishable data,or data that will change or be lost over time,immediately following disaster has been supported for decades by two programs in the United states,amassing a collection of quick response studies and an associated research *** culture is currently being challenged to better address power imbalances between researchers and disaster-affected *** recently,Canada has not had a quick response grant *** order to survey the state of knowledge and draw from it in helping to shape the new program in Canada,this article systematically analyzes the body of research created by the two Us *** results reveal a wide-ranging literature:the studies are theoretically,conceptually,topically,and methodologically quite unique to one *** diversity might appropriately reflect the nature of disasters,but the finding that many studies are not building on previous quick response research and other in sights indicate opportunities for how a new grant program in Canada can contribute to growing a robust subdiscipline of disaster research.

We consider a model for a population in a heterogeneous environment, with logistic-type local population dynamics, under the assumption that individuals can switch between two different nonzero rates of diffusion. such switching behavior has been observed in some natural systems. We study how environmental heterogeneity and the rates of switching and diffusion affect the persistence of the population. The reactiondiffusion systems in the models can be cooperative at some population densities and competitive at others. The results extend our previous work on similar models in homogeneous environments. We also consider competition between two populations that are ecologically identical, but where one population diffuses at a fixed rate and the other switches between two different diffusion rates. The motivation for that is to gain insight into when switching might be advantageous versus diffusing at a fixed rate. This is a variation on the classical results for ecologically identical competitors with differing fixed diffusion rates, where it is well known that "the slower diffuser wins".

Dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) can effectively perform modeling and qualitative reasoning for many dynamic systems. However, most of its inference algorithms involve complicated graphical transformations that are hard to program and time-consuming to compute. This article proposes a new recursive inference algorithm, which is a purely numerical method derived from probability theory and the characteristics of Bayesian networks to do both on-line and off-line inferences in discrete DBNs. The most prominent advantages of this novel approach include: (1) it is an exact inference algorithm, thus its accuracy and stability can be guaranteed, (2) it avoids the complex graphical transformation so as to remarkably improve the inference speed, and (3) its concise recursive formulae facilitate programming of both forwards and backwards pass. All of these issues are verified by accurate mathematical derivation as well as a couple of application examples with comparison between the new algorithm and the two most prevailing inference approaches of discrete DBNs - the interface algorithm and the forwards-backwards algorithm.
