Collecting Traffic Video Data Using Portable Poles: Survey, Proposal, and Analysis

Several initiatives h.ve been launch.d to h.lp prevention of traffic accidents and near-accidents across th. European Union. To aid th. overall goal of reducing death. and injuries related to traffic, one must understand th. causation of th. traffic accidents in order to prevent th.m. Rath.r th.n deploying a person to ph.sically monitor a location, th. task is eased by camera equipment installed in existing infrastructure, e.g. poles, and buildings, etc. In rural areas th.re is h.wever a very limited infrastructure available wh.ch.complicates th. data acquisition. But even if th.re is infrastructure available in eith.r th. rural area or th. urban area, th.s migh. not serve as an ideal position to capture video data from. In th.s work, we survey and provide an overview of available and relevant portable poles setups with.respect to capturing data in both.urban areas and rural areas. Th. conclusion of th. survey sh.ws a lack of a mobile, ligh.weigh., compact, and easy deployable portable pole. We th.refore design and develop a new portable pole meeting th.se requirements. Th. new proposed portable pole can be deployed by 2 persons in 2 h.urs in both.rural areas as well as urban areas due to its compactness. Th. deployment and usage of th. new portable pole is a complimentary tool, wh.ch.may improve th. camera capturing angle in case existing infrastructure is insufficient. Th.s ultimately improves th. traffic monitoring opportunities. Furth.r, th. survey of selected portable poles provides an excellent overview and can aid multiple applications with.n road traffic.

In th.s paper,for Multi-Spacecraft System(MSS)with.a directed communication topology link and a static virtual leader,a controller is proposed to realize attitude consensus and attitude stabilization with.stoch.stic links failure and actuator ***,an MSS attitude error model suitable for a directed topology link and with.a static virtual leader based on SO(3)is derived,wh.ch.considers th.t th. attitude error on SO(3)cannot be defined based on algebraic ***,we design a controller to realize th. MSS on SO(3)with.attitude consensus and attitude stabilization under stoch.stic links failure and actuator ***,th. simulation results of a multi-spacecraft system with.stoch.stic links failure and a static virtual leader spacecraft are demonstrated to illustrate th. efficiency of th. attitude controller.

Universal insertion of molecules in ionic compounds under pressure

Using first-principles calculations and crystal structure search.meth.ds, we found th.t many covalently bonded molecules such.as h., N2, CO2, Nh., h.O and Ch.may react with.NaC l, a prototype ionic solid,and form stable compounds under pressure wh.le retaining th.ir molecular structure. Th.se molecules,despite wh.th.r th.y are h.monuclear or h.teronuclear, polar or non-polar, small or large, do not sh.w strong ch.mical interactions with.surrounding Na and Cl ions. In contrast, th. most stable molecule among all examples, N2, is found to transform into cyclo-N5-anions wh.le reacting with.NaC l under h.gh.pressures. It provides a new route to synth.size pentazolates, wh.ch.are promising green energy materials with.h.gh.energy density. Our work demonstrates a unique and universal h.bridization propensity of covalently bonded molecules and solid compounds under pressure. Th.s surprising miscibility suggests possible mixing regions between th. molecular and rock layers in th. interiors of large planets.

Circulation Ch.racteristics of Persistent Cold Spells in Central–Eastern North.America

Th. circulation patterns of persistent cold weath.r spells with.durations longer th.n 10 days in central-eastern North.America （United States and Canada; 32° 52°N, 95°-65°W） are investigated by using NCEP reanalysis data from 1948 to 2014. Th. criteria for th. persistent cold spells are：（1） th.ee-day averaged temperature anomalies for th. regional average over th. central-eastern United States and Canada must be below th. 10th.percentile, and （2） such.extreme cold spells must last at least 10 days. Th. circulation patterns associated with.th.se cold spells are ex- amined to find th. common signals of th.se events. Th. circulation anomaly patterns of th.se cold spells are categor- ized based on th. E1 Nifio--South.rn Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation （AO）, and oth.r climate indices. Th. atmosph.ric circulation patterns th.t favor th. cold spells are identified th.ough.composites of geopotential h.igh. maps for th. cold spells. Negative AO ph.ses favor persistent cold spells. Ph.ses of sea surface temperature （SST） modes th.t are associated with.warm SSTs in th. eastern extratropical Pacific also favor persistent cold events in th. study region. Stratosph.ric polar vortex breakdown alone is not a good predictor for th. regional extreme cold spells in central-eastern North.America. Th. meridional dispersions of quasi-stationary Rossby waves in th. Pacific-North.America sector in terms of cut-off zonal wavenumber modulated by background flow are analyzed to provide insigh. into th. difference in evolution of th. cold spells under different mean AO ph.ses. Th. waveguide for AO 〉 1 is in a narrow latitudinal band centered on 40°N, wh.reas th. waveguide for AO 〈 -1 is in a broader latitudinal band from 40° to 65°N. Th. circulation patterns and lower boundary conditions favorable for persistent cold spells identified by th.s study can be a stepping-stone for improving winter subseasonal forecasting in North.America.

A Cilia-inspired Closed-loop Sensor-actuator Array

Cilia are finger-like cell-surface organelles th.t are used by certain varieties of aquatic unicellular organisms for motility, sensing and obj ect manipulation. Initiated by internal generators and external mech.nical and ch.mical stimuli, coordinated undulations of cilia lead to th. motion of a fluid surrounding th. organism. Th.s motion transports micro-particles towards an oral cavity and provides motile force. Inspired by th. emergent properties of cilia possessed by th. pond organism P. caudatum, we propose a novel smart surface with.closed-loop control using sensor-actuators pairings th.t can manipulate objects. Each.vibrating motor actuator is controlled by a localised microcontroller wh.ch.utilises proximity sensor information to initiate actuation. Th. circuit boards are designed to be plug-and-play and are infinitely up-scalable and reconfigurable. Th. smart surface is capable of moving objects at a speed of 7.2 millimetres per second in forward or reverse direction. Furth.r development of th.s platform will include more anatomically similar biomimetic cilia and control.

Th. Effects of Zinc Sulfate on th. in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in Cervids

Th. captive wh.te-tailed deer industry h.s an estimated impact of 1.6 billion USD in th. state of Texas alone. h.wever, nutritional requirements for cervids are determined th.ough.research.based on sh.ep and goats. Th. objective of th.s study was to determine th. effects of zinc on differences in dry matter digestibility in vitro for wh.te-tailed does (Odocoileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were eth.cally h.rvested, rumens were collected, and placed into a cooler containing warm water. Rumen contents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using ch.ese cloth.wh.le applying CO2. Fluid was placed into four separate incubator jars with.filter bags containing a 1:1 alfalfa to coastal h.y blend. Zinc doses of 0.073 mg/kg/d equivalents were added to two of th. jars ( Zn), and th. additional two jars received 0.00 mg/kg/d (CON). Following 48 h.of incubation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) sh.wed no significant differences between th. control and th. treatment groups. Average dry matter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respectively. Th.re were no differences detected in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or OM between th. treatment groups. Wh.le no detectable differences were observed in th.s study, th.s meth.dology did prove to be viable and functional for microbial digestion in vitro. Th.s study can be replicated with.multiple experimental units to confirm th. observations of increased digestibility. Formal nutritional guidelines can be created to allow for more efficient feeding of cervids th.reby reducing feed costs and continuing th. growth.of th. captive deer industry.
