AIM:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a prominent gaseous constituent of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with known cytotoxic properties. Endogenous concentrations of H2S are reported to range between 0.2-3.4 mmol/L in the GI tract of mice and humans. Considering such high levels we speculate that, at non-toxic concentrations, H2S may interact with chemical agents and alter the response of colonic epithelium cells to such compounds. The GI tract is a major site for the absorption of phytochemical constituents such as isothiocyanates, flavonoids, and carotenoids, with each group having a role in the prevention of human diseases such as colon cancer. The chemopreventative properties of the phytochemical agent p-phenyethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) are well recognized. However, little is currently known about the physiological or biochemical factors present in the GI tract that may influence the biological properties of ITCs. The current study was undertaken to determine the effects of H2S on PEITC mediated apoptosis in colon cancer cells. METHODS: Induction of apoptosis by PEITC in human colon cancer HCT116 cells was assessed using classic apoptotic markers namely SubGl population analysis, caspase-3 like activity and nuclear fragmentation and condensation coupled with the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrasodium bromide) viability assay and LDH leakage. RESULTS: PEITC significantly induced apoptosis in HCT116 cells as assessed by SubGl population formation, nuclear condensation, LDH leakage and caspase-3 activity after 24 h, these data being significant from control groups (Pwith physiological concentrations of H2S (0.1-1 mmol/L) prevented PEITC mediated apoptosis as assessed using the parameters described. CONCLUSION: PEITC effectively induced cell death in the human adenocarcinoma cell line HCT116 in vitro through classic apoptotic mechanisms. However, in the presence of H2S, apoptosis was abolished. Bacterial microbiome of Coptotermes curvignathus （Isoptera： Rhinotermitidae） reflects the coevolution of species and dietary pattern

Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren is capable of feeding on living trees. This ability is attributed to their effective digestive system that is furnished by the termite＇s own cellulolytic enzymes and cooperative enzymes produced by their gut microbes. In this study, the identity of an array of diverse microbes residing in the gut of C. curvignathus was revealed by sequencing the near-full-length 16S rRNA genes. A total of 154 bacterial phylotypes were found. The Bacteroidetes was the most abundant phylum and accounted for about 65% of the gut microbial profile. This is followed by Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Spirochetes, Proteobacteria, TM7, Deferribacteres, Planctomycetes, Ferrucomicrobia, and Termite Group 1. Based on the phylogenetic study, this symbiosis can be a result of long coevolution of gut enterotypes with the phylogenic distribution, strong selection pressure in the gut, and other speculative pressures that determine bacterial biome to follow. The phylogenetic distribution of cloned rRNA genes in the bacterial domain that was considerably different from other termite reflects the strong selection pressures in the gut where a proportional composition of gut microbiome of C. curvignathus has established. The selection pressures could be linked to the unique diet preference of C. curvignathus that profoundly feeds on living trees. The delicate gut microbiome composition may provide available nutrients to the host as well as potential protection against opportunistic pathogen.

The focus of scholars studying user innovation has been restricted to the interaction between companies and individual users,and how companies can unilaterally exploit values from the value chain between companies and *** argue that the value chain between the user and manufacturer should be a bilateral value chain in which both the user and manufacturer can conduct their own innovations and provide greater value to the whole value *** this paper,using examples from China's civil-military integration project,we took a step forward to apply the user innovation theory in the explanation of inter-sector technological value *** main theoretical contribution of this paper is the expansion of the scope of application of the user innovation theory to inter-sector level *** cases from China's civil-military integration project,we found that the concepts of user and innovator become blurred when we study the phenomenon across *** we go beyond individual user and manufacturer and shift the focus of our discussion to the level of inter-sector technological value transfer,we will find that it is possible for organizational agents at large to be both users and innovators of technology.

will Sustainable Food Sovereignty Research Be Sustainable in the Future?

The article proposes two agricultural paradigms to address global food production sustainability. First, precision agroecology may unite production-oriented and ecological agriculture, but it offers distinct solutions based on data, innovation, and decision-analysis technologies. The author demonstrates how precision technology and agroecological principles can transform agriculture by 1) minimizing inputs with optimization prescriptions, 2) replacing self-sustaining inputs with location variable rate technology, 3) integrating functional ecosystems into agroecosystems with exact preservation technology, 4) hooking up farmers and consumers via value-based food ecosystems, and 5) establishing equitable agroecology. Hence, precision agroecology provides a rare opportunity to integrate indigenous practices and contemporary technologies to revolutionize farming practices. Precision agroecology can tackle agriculture’s most serious sustainability issues in a world in flux.

Middle Paleozoic metamorphic and sedimentary events in the central Korean Peninsula and their geological implications

The Middle Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the central Korean Peninsula(Gyeonggi Massif,Hongseong-Imjingang,and Okcheon zone of Okcheon Belts)remains ***,the occurrence of high-grade metamorphism and sedimentation need further *** this study,we conducted zircon U-Pb-rare earth element analyses from in the ultramafic-mafic complex in the central Korean Peninsula(Cheonan and Gapyeong areas)and the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks in the Okcheon Zone of the Okcheon Belt to constrain the timing of maximum depositional and metamorphic *** also examined the metamorphic P-T-t path from garnet-bearing amphibolite in the central Korean Peninsula by pseudosection modeling and *** results show that(i)some of the ultramafic-mafic complex and metasedimentary rocks in the central Korean Peninsula formed during the Middle Paleozoic(ca.450–374 Ma);(ii)garnet-bearing amphibolite underwent successive metamorphism from amphibolite facies condition(7.5–8.0 kbar and 540–630℃)at pre-peak stage to granulite facies condition(10.9–11.8 kbar and 740–820℃)at peak stage,and then retrograded into amphibolite facies condition(5.7–7.7 kbar and 530–670℃)along the clockwise P–T path during ca.403–362 *** and previous studies suggest that the central Korean Peninsula underwent subduction-related orogenic events during the Middle Paleozoic era,and it is well correlated to those of the orogenic events in the North Qinling belt.

Since the first discovery of solar-driven water splitting catalyzed by TiO_(2) semiconductors,extensive research works have been devoted over the ***,the design of a photocatalyst with dual redox potential is of prominent interest to fully utilize both photogenerated electrons and holes in the redox *** all,the coproduction of H_(2) and O_(2) from water using metal-free carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))has been viewed as a rising star in this ***,the hole-mediated oxidation reaction is commonly recognized as the rate-determining step,which drastically leads to poor overall water splitting *** top of that,rapid recombination and undesirable back reaction appeared as one of the challenging parts in overall water *** this review,the up-to-date advances in modified g-C_(3)N_(4)-based photocatalysts toward efficient overall water splitting are summarized,which are mainly classified into structural and defect engineering,single-atom catalysis,cocatalyst loading,and heterojunction *** review also addresses the underlying idea and concept to tackle the aforementioned problem with the use of emerging modification strategies,hence serving as the guiding star for future *** the outstanding breakthrough thus far,critical recommendations related to g-C_(3)N_(4) photocatalytic systems are prospected to pave the way toward the implementation in the practical energy production process.

A review of image processing and quantification analysis for solid oxide fuel cell

The purpose of this study is to investigate the approaches applied to analyze solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) microstructural properties. Both manual and automated image processing approaches applied on SOFC microstructural images which are obtained from several types of tomography such as dual-beam focused ion beam with scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) and others are discussed. In fact, to achieve a realistic and accurate SOFC microstructural properties, such as average diameter, volume fraction, triple phase boundary (TPB), area interface density and tortuosity factor, the approaches of image processing and quantification are crucial for a reliable image generation for quantification purposes. The microstructural properties are optimized to improve SOFC electrode performance. Therefore, the image processing and quantification approaches are outlined and reviewed. Despite the automated image processing and quantification algorithms significantly outperform manual image processing and quantification approaches in terms of computing speed when evaluating and measuring microstructural properties, the efficiency and productivity are still extremely taken into concern. As a result, image processing and quantification approaches are concluded and presented respectively in this paper.

Ceramic-metal package for high power LED lighting

High power light-emitting diodes （LEDs） lighting has drawn a great interest in the field of street light system in recent years. Key parameters for successful launching of LED street light in the commercial market are price and light efficiency, respectively, and they are greatly influenced by the materials and design factors used in high power LED package. This article presents a new design and materials processing technology to realize the solution of LED packaging with advantageous in price and performance. Cost effective materials and processing technology can be realized via thick film glass-ceramic insulating layer and silver conductor. Highly effective thermal design using direct heat dissipation to heat sink in LED package is demonstrated.
