Food insecurity increases the risk of overweight and chronic diseases in adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis

To investigate the relationship between food insecurity(FI)and overweight/obesity(OW/OB)or corresponding chronic diseases in adolescents,33 studies with 181135 individuals were included in this meta-analysis.Six studies and 10 studies,reported a higher risk of overweight and obesity in adolescents experiencing FI,respectively(OR 1.38,95%CI 1.20‒1.58,P<0.0001;OR 1.11,95%CI 1.01‒1.22,P=0.035,respectively).Based on the pooled results,adolescents with severe FI had the highest risk of OW/OB(OR 1.45,95%CI 1.20‒1.75,P<0.0001).The pooled OR indicated no signifi cant association between FI and OW/OB,when the adolescents were stratifi ed into those under 6 years old and those between 6 and 18 years old.Eleven studies assessed the relationship between FI and the risk of chronic diseases.The anemia subgroup was significantly associated with FI(OR 1.67,95%CI 1.30‒2.13,P<0.0001).Severe FI was reported to increase the risk of hypertension(OR 1.59,95%CI 1.28‒1.98,P<0.0001).Furthermore,a pooled analysis revealed a signifi cant association between FI and the risk of chronic diseases in both 6 and 6-18-year-old subgroups.

Multi-Strategy Assisted Multi-Objective Whale Optimization Algorithm for Feature Selection

In classification problems,datasets often contain a large amount of features,but not all of them are relevant for accurate classification.In fact,irrelevant features may even hinder classification accuracy.Feature selection aims to alleviate this issue by minimizing the number of features in the subset while simultaneously minimizing the classification error rate.Single-objective optimization approaches employ an evaluation function designed as an aggregate function with a parameter,but the results obtained depend on the value of the parameter.To eliminate this parameter’s influence,the problem can be reformulated as a multi-objective optimization problem.The Whale Optimization Algorithm(WOA)is widely used in optimization problems because of its simplicity and easy implementation.In this paper,we propose a multi-strategy assisted multi-objective WOA(MSMOWOA)to address feature selection.To enhance the algorithm’s search ability,we integrate multiple strategies such as Levy flight,Grey Wolf Optimizer,and adaptive mutation into it.Additionally,we utilize an external repository to store non-dominant solution sets and grid technology is used to maintain diversity.Results on fourteen University of California Irvine(UCI)datasets demonstrate that our proposed method effectively removes redundant features and improves classification performance.The source code can be accessed from the website:https://***/zc0315/MSMOWOA.

Molecular reconstruction of vacuum gas oils using a general molecule library through entropy maximization

Vacuum gas oil(VGO)is the most important feedstock for hydrocracking processes in refineries,but its molecular composition cannot be fully acquired by current analysis techniques owing to its complexity.In order to build an accurate and reliable molecular-level kinetic model for reactor design and process optimization,the molecular composition of VGO has to be reconstructed based on limited measurements.In this study,a modified stochastic reconstruction-entropy maximization(SR-REM)algorithm was applied to reconstruct VGOs,with generation of a general molecule library once and for all via the SR method at the first step and adjustment of the molecular abundance of various VGOs via the REM method at the second step.The universality of the molecule library and the effectiveness of the modified SR-REM method were validated by fifteen VGOs(three from the literature)from different geographic regions of the world and with different properties.The simulated properties(density,elemental composition,paraffin-naphthene-aromatics distribution,boiling point distribution,detailed composition of naphthenes and aromatics in terms of ring number as well as composition of S-heterocycles)are in good agreement with the measured counterparts,showing average absolute relative errors of below 10%for each property.

First-principles study on persistent luminescence mechanism of LiYGeO_(4):Eu^(3+)

LiYGeO_(4):Eu^(3+)is a red persistent luminescent material with a duration of more than 21 h.Although its persistent luminescence phenomenon has been fully studied,its detailed mechanism is still the subject of debates.Herein,we performed first-principles study on the intrinsic point defects and the charge transfer processes in LiYGeO_(4):Eu^(3+)to reveal the mechanism of persistent luminescence.The results show that,under charge transfer excitation,the electron is promoted from the valence band(oxygen ion ligand)to the central Eu^(3+)ion to form Eu^(2+)ion in LiYGeO_(4):Eu^(3+),leaving a hole behind.The charge transfer excitation can relax quickly to the excited state of the Eu^(3+)ion,which produces the characteristic^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(J)(J=0-6)emission.The Li vacancies(V_(Li))and the antisite defects of Li replacing Y site(Li_(Y))and Y replacing Li site(YLi)are main defects,while O vacancies(V_(O))are less important in concentration due to high formation energy.VLi and Liy can serve as hole-type traps,with the trap depths suitable for trapping the holes produced by illumination.The delayed release holes can combine with the Eu^(2+)left behind by the illumination,leading to persistent luminescence.The VLi trap is shallower than Li_(Y),and the latter is responsible for the long duration of persistent luminescence.A schematic based on the calculation results is constructed to illustrate the mechanism of persistent luminescence.

A robust solid electrolyte interphase enabled by solvate ionic liquid for high-performance sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium metal batteries

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries(ASSLMBs)that incorporate solid electrolyte(SE)and lithium metal anode suggest considerable potential in addressing the security concerns and energy density limitation of conventional lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).However,the practical application of ASSLMBs is always restricted by the interfacial instability of lithium metal anode/electrolyte and inevitable lithium dendrites propagation in SE.Herein,a solvate ionic liquid is adopted to modify the interface stability of lithium metal anode/electrolyte and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites via an in-situ formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)on the surface of lithium metal anode.Consequently,the ASSLMBs assembled with Li_(6)PS_(5)Cl(LPSCl)electrolyte,lithium metal anode that protected by robust SEI layer,and LiNbO_(3)@NCM622 cathode exhibit high initial capacity of 126.5 mAh·g^(−1)and improved cycling stability with a capacity retention of 80.3%over 60 cycles at 0.1 C.This work helps to provide a facile route for the design of robust SEI in the application of ASSLMBs.

Deep Global Multiple-Scale and Local Patches Attention Dual-Branch Network for Pose-Invariant Facial Expression Recognition

Pose-invariant facial expression recognition(FER)is an active but challenging research topic in computer vision.Especially with the involvement of diverse observation angles,FER makes the training parameter models inconsistent from one view to another.This study develops a deep global multiple-scale and local patches attention(GMS-LPA)dual-branch network for pose-invariant FER to weaken the influence of pose variation and selfocclusion on recognition accuracy.In this research,the designed GMS-LPA network contains four main parts,i.e.,the feature extraction module,the global multiple-scale(GMS)module,the local patches attention(LPA)module,and the model-level fusion model.The feature extraction module is designed to extract and normalize texture information to the same size.The GMS model can extract deep global features with different receptive fields,releasing the sensitivity of deeper convolution layers to pose-variant and self-occlusion.The LPA module is built to force the network to focus on local salient features,which can lower the effect of pose variation and self-occlusion on recognition results.Subsequently,the extracted features are fused with a model-level strategy to improve recognition accuracy.Extensive experimentswere conducted on four public databases,and the recognition results demonstrated the feasibility and validity of the proposed methods.

Unraveling SO_(2)-tolerant mechanism over Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) catalysts for NO_(x) reduction

Developing low-temperature SO_(2)-tolerant catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO_(x) is still a challenging task.The sulfation of active metal oxides and deposition of ammonium bisulfate deactivate catalysts,due to the difficult decomposition of the as-formed sulfate species at low temperatures(300℃);however,the SO_(2)-tolerant mechanism of metal sulfate catalysts is still ambiguous.In this study,Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) and Ce_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) catalysts were prepared using the corresponding metal sulfate salt as the precursor.These catalysts were tested for their low-temperature activity and SO_(2) tolerance activity.Compared to Ce_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2),Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) showed significantly better low-temperature activity and SO_(2) tolerance.It was demonstrated that less surface sulfate species formed on Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) and Ce_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2).However,the presence of NO and O_(2) could assist the decomposition of NH_(4)HSO_(4) over Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) at a lower temperature,endowing Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2) with better low-temperature SO_(2) tolerance than Ce_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2).This study unraveled the SO_(2)-tolerant mechanism of Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)/TiO_(2)at lower temperatures(<300℃),and a potential strategy is proposed for improving the low-temperature SO_(2)-tolerance of catalysts with Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3) as the main active component or functional promoter.

Determining the Covertness of COVID-19-Wuhan,China,2020

Introduction:The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has been going on for over a year and has reemerged in several regions.Therefore,understanding the covertness of COVID-19 is critical to more precisely estimating the pandemic size,especially the population of hidden carriers(those with very mild or no symptoms).Methods:A stochastic dynamic model was proposed to capture the transmission mechanism of COVID-19 and to depict the covertness of COVID-19.The proposed model captured unique features of COVID-19,changes in the diagnosis criteria,and escalating containment measures.Results:The model estimated that,for the epidemic in Wuhan,79.8%(76.7%-82.7%)of the spread was caused by hidden carriers.The overall lab-confirmation rate in Wuhan up until March 8,2020 was 0.17(0.15-0.19).The diagnostic rate among patients with significant symptoms went up to 0.82 on March 8,2020 from 0.43 on January 1,2020 with escalating containment measures and nationwide medical supports.The probability of resurgence could be as high as 0.72 if containment measures were lifted after zero new reported(lab-confirmed or clinically confirmed)cases in a consecutive period of 14 days.This probability went down to 0.18 and 0.01 for measures lifted after 30 and 60 days,respectively.Discussion:Consistent with the cases detected in Wuhan in mid-May,2020,this study suggests that much of the COVID-19 pandemic is underreported and highly covert,which suggests that strict measures must be enforced continuously to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Site-specific N-glycosylation characterization and allergenicity analysis of globulin-1 S allele from wheat

N-glycans in many proteins are of great concern because of their strong association with food allergies. Triticum aestivum(bread wheat), a major food crop, is known as one of the “Big Eight” allergenic groups. However, little research has been done about N-glycans in wheat glycoproteins. In this study, a soluble wheat glycoprotein was purified from wheat and further identified as globulin-1 S allele(GSA). The wheat GSA displayed significant IgE-binding activity. Moreover, one N-glycosylation site and 6 kinds of N-glycans were identified by mass spectrometry, including 3 high mannose types and 3 complex types. Furthermore, the IgE-binding activity of wheat GSA is proved to be reduced by the removal of N-glycan, thermal treatment(temperatures > 80 ℃), and strong acidic treatment(pH 3.0). These findings would provide a better understanding of the effects of N-glycosylation, thermal treatment, and acidic treatment on the molecular characteristics of GSA, and further provide new insights into the development of hypoallergenic wheat products.
