Ti-MOF-based biosafety materials for efficient and long-life disinfection via synergistic photodynamic and photothermal effects

Pathogenic bacterial infection is severely threatening public health globally.The multi-modal antibacterial nanoplatforms could significantly improve the antibacterial efficiency.Here,we report a metal(Ti)-organic framework(MOF)derived nanocarbon(C-Ti-MOF)as a biosafety material for synergistic sterilization of pathogenic bacteria via efficient photodynamic catalysis and robust photothermal effects.The C-Ti-MOF consists of abundant TiO_(2) nanodots embedded in graphitic carbon frameworks.Under visible light irradiation,TiO_(2) nanodots can catalyze H_(2)O_(2) and O_(2) to produce superoxide anion(•O_(2)^(–))and singlet oxygen(1O2),respectively.Meanwhile,under near-infrared irradiation(NIR),C-Ti-MOF can generate massive heat to destroy bacterial membranes.Systematic antibacterial experiments reveal that the C-Ti-MOF nanoagents have a long-lasting and nearly 100%bactericidal ratio at an extremely low dose(0.16 mg/mL),which is much better than the state-of-the-art TiO_(2)(Commercial TiO_(2)(P25),0.64 mg/mL).Furthermore,the C-Ti-MOF can be electrospun into an antibacterial nanofiber membrane via mixing with polymeric matrix for treating bacteriacontaminated wastewater,and the membranes possess integrated antibacterial activity and excellent biocompatibility.Our study demonstrates a promising Ti-MOF-based biosafety material for efficient and long-life disinfection,which may stimulate new research in MOF-related biological applications in various disciplines ranging from water decontaminations to nanotherapeutics.

AIM To investigate whether M1 or M2 polarization contributes to the therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) in acute hepatic failure(AHF).METHODS MSCs were transfused into rats with AHF induced by D-galactosamine(DGal N). The therapeutic effects of MSCs were evaluated based on survival rate and hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis. Hepatocyte regeneration capacity was evaluated by the expression of the hepatic progenitor surface marker epithelial cell adhesion molecule(Ep CAM). Macrophage polarization was analyzed by M1 markers [CD68,tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α),interferon-γ(IFN-γ),inducible nitric oxide synthase(INOS)] and M2 markers [CD163,interleukin(IL)-4,IL-10,arginase-1(Arg-1)] in the survival and death groups after MSC transplantation.RESULTS The survival rate in the MSC-treated group was increased compared with the DPBS-treated control group(37.5% vs 10%). MSC treatment protected rats with AHF by reducing apoptotic hepatocytes and promoting hepatocyte regeneration. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that MSC treatment significantly increased the expression of Ep CAM compared with the control groups(P < 0.001). Expression of Ep CAM in the survival group was significantly up-regulated compared with the death group after MSC transplantation(P = 0.003). Transplantation of MSCs significantly improved the expression of CD163 and increased the gene expression of IL-10 and Arg-1 in the survival group. IL-4 concentrations were significantly increased compared to the death group after MSC transplantation(88.51 ± 24.51 pg/m L vs 34.61 ± 6.6 pg/m L,P < 0.001). In contrast,macrophages showed strong expression of CD68,TNF-α,and INOS in the death group. The concentration of IFN-γ was significantly increased compared to the survival group after MSC transplantation(542.11 ± 51.59 pg/m L vs 104.07 ± 42.80 pg/m L,P < 0.001).CONCLUSION M2 polarization contributes to the therapeutic effects of MSCs in AHF by altering levels of anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory factors.

Background： Microwave therapy is a minimal invasive procedure and has been employed in clinical practice for the treatment of various types of cancers. However, its therapeutic application in non-small-cell lung cancer and the underlying mechanism remains to be investigated. This study aimed to investigate its effect on Lewis lung carcinoma （LLC） tumor in vivo. Methods： Fifty LLC tumor-bearing C57BL/6 mice were adopted to assess the effect of microwave radiation on the growth and apoptosis of LLC tumor in vivo. These mice were randomly assigned to 10 groups with 5 mice in each group. Five groups were treated by single pulse microwave at different doses for different time, and the other five groups were radiated by multiple-pulse treatment of a single dose. Apoptosis of cancer cells was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assay. Western blotting was applied to detect the expression of proteins. Results： Single pulse of microwave radiation for 5 min had little effect on the mice. Only 15-min microwave radiation at 30 mW/cm2 significantly increased the mice body temperature （2.20 ± 0.82）℃ as compared with the other groups （0.78 ± 0.29 ℃, 1.24 ± 0.52 ℃, 0.78 ± 0.42 ℃, respectively）, but it did not affect the apoptosis of LLC tumor cells significantly. Continous microwave radiation exposure, single dose microwave radiation once per day for up to seven days, inhibited cell division and induced apoptosis of LLC tumor cells in a dose- and duration-dependent manner. It upregulated the protein levels of p53, Caspase 3, Bax and downregulated Bcl-2 protein. Conclusions： Multiple exposures of LLC-bearing mice to microwave radiation effectively induced tumor cell apoptosis at least partly by upregulating proapoptotic proteins and downregulating antiapoptotic proteins. Continuous radiation at low microwave intensity Ibr a short time per day is promising in treating non-small-cell lung cancer.

The 1927 Gulang M8.0 earthquake has triggered a huge number of landslides,resulting in massive loss of people’s life and property.However,integrated investigations and results regarding the landslides triggered by this earthquake are rare;such situation hinders the deep understanding of these landslides such as scale,extent,and distribution.With the support of Google Earth software,this study intends to finish the seismic landslides interpretation work in the areas of Gulang earthquake(VIII-XI degree)using the artificial visual interpretation method,and further analyze the spatial distribution and impact factors of these landslides.The results show that the earthquake has triggered at least 936 landslides in the VIII-XI degree zone,with a total landslide area of 58.6 km^2.The dense area of seismic landslides is located in the middle and southern parts of the X intensity circle.Statistical analysis shows that seismic landslides is mainly controlled by factors such as elevation,slope gradient,slope direction,strata,seismic intensity,faults and rivers.The elevation of 2000-2800 m is the high-incidence interval of the landslide.The landslide density is larger with a higher slope gradient.East and west directions are the dominant sliding directions.The areas with Cretaceous and Quaternary strata are the main areas of the Gulang seismic landslides.The X intensity zone triggered the most landslides.In addition,landslides often occur in regions near rivers and faults.This paper provides a scientific reference for exploring the development regularities of landslides triggered by the 1927 Gulang earthquake and effectively mitigating the landslide disasters of the earthquake.

BACKGROUND A gastric glomus tumor is relatively rare,and there is little knowledge on its endoscopic ultrasound findings.AIM To assess the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)in the diagnosis of gastric glomus tumor and to discuss its value by reviewing the literature.METHODS A retrospective analysis of the EUS characteristics of gastric glomus tumor(such as tumor location,shape,size,echogenicity,homogeneity,margins,layer of origin,and so on)was performed.The study included 12 cases of gastric glomus tumor confirmed by surgery and pathology(7 females and 5 males,age range 36-74 years,average age was 58.2 years).RESULTS All the lesions were located in the gastric antrum(12 cases),protruding into the cavity,with a diameter between 1 and 3.5 cm.Glomus tumor of the stomach manifested as a circumscribed and slightly hypoechoic mass in the fourth layer,with an internal heterogeneous echo mixed with hyperechogenic spots and a marginal more hypoechoic halo.Smooth muscle actin,h-caldesmon and vimentin were shown to be positive by immunohistochemistry.CONCLUSION Although glomus tumor of the stomach is relatively rare,a typical glomus tumor of the stomach has characteristic changes under EUS.

A numerical model with Stokes drift for pollutant transport within the surf zone on a plane beach

This study examines the effects of Stokes drift on pollutant transport within the surf zone on a plane beach both numerically and experimentally. Firstly, the numerical model is described. The wave-induced current is modeled using the concept of the radiation stress. The wave propagation model is based on the wave energy conservation equation. And the advective diffusion model including the Stokes drift is used to describe the pollutant transport in the surf zone. Model validation was achieved in this case versus an analytical solution for an instantaneous point source in a uniform horizontal flow. This study also describes a laboratory experiment on dye release in the surf zone over a plane beach. We examined the final inclination angle required by a continuously released pollutant plume to reach the shoreline under both cases, and transport velocities in the alongshore and cross- shore directions were estimated by linearly fitting the location of a dye-patch front at different time. Results show that this dye patch moved shoreward with an approximate speed of 0.05 m/s (0.017 m/s) between 10 s and 40 s and 0.001 m/s (0.011 m/s) after 40 s for Case 1 (2). This model was then used to simulate pollutant transport in the surf zone on a plane beach as reproduced in the current experiment. Comparisons between our dye transport experiment and numerical results were then also conducted;the data showed that the numerical results including Stokes drift agreed more closely with experimental results than those without it. The data showed that the pollutant was generally transported obviously shoreward in addition to its expected drift along the shore. We also suggest that Stokes drift plays an important role in pollutant movement in the surf zone, especially shoreward.
