Printing accuracy tracking with 2D optical microscopy and super-resolution metamaterial-assisted 1D terahertz spectroscopy

Printable electronics is a promising manufacturing technology for the potential production of low-cost flexible electronic devices,ranging from displays to active *** is known that rapid printing of conductive ink on a flexible substrate is vulnerable to several sources of variation during the manufacturing ***,this process is still not being subjected to a quality control method that is both non-invasive and in *** address this issue,we propose controlling the printing accuracy by monitoring the spatial distribution of the deposited ink using terahertz(THz)*** parameters studied are the printing speed of an industrial roll-to-roll press with flexography printing units and the pre-calibration compression,or expansion factor,for a pattern printed on a flexible plastic *** pattern,which is carefully selected,has Babinet’s electromagnetic transmission properties in the THz frequency *** validate our choice,we quantified the geometric variations of the printed pattern by visible microscopy and compared its accuracy using one-dimensional THz *** study shows a remarkable agreement between visible microscopic observation of the printing performance and the signature of the THz ***,under specific conditions,one-dimensional(1D)THz information from a resonant pattern can be more accurate than two-dimensional(2D)microscopy *** result paves the way for a simple strategy for non-invasive and contactless in situ monitoring of printable electronics production.

The outer blood-retina barrier(oBRB),crucial for the survival and the proper functioning of the overlying retinal layers,is disrupted in numerous diseases affecting the retina,leading to the loss of the photoreceptors and ultimately of *** study the oBRB and/or its degeneration,many in vitro oBRB models have been developed,notably to investigate potential therapeutic strategies against retinal ***,to this day,most of these pathologies are untreatable,especially once the first signs of degeneration are *** cure those patients,a current strategy is to cultivate in vitro a mature oBRB epithelium on a custom membrane that is further implanted to replace the damaged native *** a description of the oBRB and the related diseases,this review presents an overview of the oBRB models,from the simplest to the most ***,we propose a discussion over the used cell types,for their relevance to study or treat the *** designed for in vitro applications are then examined,by paying particular attention to the design evolution in the last years,the development of pathological models and the benefits of co-culture models,including both the retinal pigment epithelium and the ***,this review focuses on the models developed for in vivo implantation,with special emphasis on the choice of the material,its processing and its characterization,before discussing the reported pre-clinical and clinical trials.

When the simulation takes account of dissipative mechanisms,*** conduction and viscosity,the shocks become smeared out to produce thin layers of rapidly and continuously varying energy,density,pressure and velocity rather than discrete surfaces of mathematical *** the mid twentieth century,Von Neumann and Richtmyer suggested the use of a viscous pressure term(bulk viscosity)in the equilibrium equations for ideal gases in order to examine the shock while avoiding numerical oscillations at the shock *** the bulk viscosity is included in the conservation equations,the comprehensive physics present a continuous solution satisfying the Rankine-Hugoniot ***,the published literature includes few engineering and research studies presenting the novel equilibrium equations in which the incorporation of bulk viscosity generates a continuous solution in keeping with conservation *** present work is aimed at demonstrating that the artificial bulk viscosity defined by Von Neumann and Richtmyer is also applicable to fluids described by a density-linear equation of state,that the novel equations present a continuous solution,and that a shock layer of the same order as the computational grid is *** the method has been employed and mathematically proven for onedimensional flow,it would seem to be just as relevant to the analysis of more complex flow dynamics and fluid structure interactions via an application of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian(ALE)formulation.

The paper refers to the analysis of interactions between the impeller and the vaned diffuser based on the air model of a radial flow *** study deals with a numerical simulation of the flow for a full 360°entire impeller and *** task is carried out closely under the design operating conditions and for one particular position of the impeller blade with respect to the diffuser *** all the results,the focus is mainly on the flow pattern at the exit part inside the impeller facing the diffuser *** results are compared to the available PIV measurements.

Investigation of the fluid flow in an isolated rotor-stator system with a peripheral opening

This paper deals with an experimental, theoretical and numerical study of a turbulent flow with separated boundary layers between a rotor and a stator. The system is not subjected to any superimposed radial flow. The periphery of the cavity is opened to the atmosphere so that the solid body rotation for infinite discs is not always observed. Emphasis was placed on develop- ment of an asymptotic approach and a step-by-step method to compute the radial distribution of the core swirl ratio and the static pressure on the stator side. The theory also includes the radial and axial velocities in the core region. The numerical simulation has been conducted with the commercial CFD code Fluent 6.1. The k- SST turbulence model is used, with the assumption of 2D-axisymmetric and steady flow. CFD validations have been performed by comparison of the numerical results with the corresponding theoretical results. Numerical and experimental results are in good agreement with analytical solutions.

Formidable females redux:male social integration into female networks and the value of dynamic multilayer networks

The development of multilayer network techniques is a boon for researchers who wish to understand how different interaction layers might influence each other,and how these in turn might influence group ***,we investigate how integration between male and female grooming and aggression interaction networks influences male power trajectories in vervet monkeys chlorocebus *** previous analyses of this phenomenon used a monolayer approach,and our aim here is to extend these analyses using a dynamic multilayer *** do so,we constructed a temporal series of male and female interaction *** then used a multivariate multilevel autoregression model to compare cross-lagged associations between a male's centrality in the female grooming layer and changes in male Elo *** results confirmed our original findings:changes in male centrality within the female grooming network were weakly but positively tied to changes in their Elo ***,the multilayer network approach offered additional insights into this social process,identifying how changes in a male's centrality cascade through the other network *** dynamic view indicates that the changes in Elo ratings are likely to be short-lived,but that male centrality within the female network had a much stronger impact throughout the multilayer network as a whole,especially on reducing intermale aggression(i.e.,aggression directed by males toward other males).We suggest that multilayer social network approaches can take advantage of increased amounts of social data that are more commonly collected these days,using a variety of *** data are inherently multilevel and multilayered,and thus offer the ability to quantify more precisely the dynamics of animal social behaviors.

Multi-scale approach to understanding climate effects on offspring size at birth and date of birth in a reptile

Climate change is already impacting species around the *** most focus has been on the effect of temperature,changes in climatic variables other than temperature are also expected to drive biological *** models suggest that ectotherms,such as reptiles,will be strongly affected by climate change;however,data from natural populations are ***,we use extensive data from 2 populations of a viviparous lizard(Niveoscincus ocellatus Gray,1845)at the climatic extreme of the species *** examine the effects of climate at a local,a regional and a global scale(thus,integrating a suite of variables at different spatial and temporal scales)on 2 key life history traits:offspring date of birth and size at ***,our results show that across 9 years of study,local temperature had strong effects on the offspring date of birth but not on the size at ***,a rapid increase in local temperature throughout the species range(as predicted under global warming scenarios)is likely to affect phenological processes with potential concomitant effects on offspring fitness and survival.

Waterbird use of farm dams in south-eastern Australia:abundance and influence of biophysical and landscape characteristics

Background: While agriculture has taken much environmental water in Australia's Murray-Darling Basin, agricultural expansion has resulted in a vast number of farm dams, almost three-quarters of a million in the Murray-Darling Basin ***: Over a summer we studied(1) waterbird abundance and species richness and(2) the influence of biophysical and landscape characteristics across 49 farm dams at a large mixed-enterprise farm in northern Victoria on the southern reach of the Murray-Darling ***: On average, dams were found to host 27.1 ± 71.1 individuals/ha and 1.8 ± 2.9 species per pond. Such densities are comparable to those on natural wetlands. Dam surface area and perimeter and amount of vegetation were positively and strongly correlated with the Rallidae density(birds/ha), but no other parameters were strongly correlated with any other functional group. The landscape in which the dams were embedded had a highly significant effect(p < 0.001) on the number of birds found on a ***: Our research needs to be complemented with further studies in other parts of the Basin and on other taxa, but given at our site they supported similar densities of individuals and species to natural wetlands, and given the fact that there are 710,539 farm dams in the Murray-Darling Basin, which hosts much of Australia's waterbird fauna, it is reasonable to suggest that farm dams are overlooked, and possibly very important, avian biodiversity hotspots. It also highlights the importance of a landscape setting, in which dams are situated, on the number of birds using the dams.

Rotating instability in the vaneless diffuser of a radial flow pump

The paper refers to the behavior of a vaneless diffuser of a radial flow pump in partial flow operating conditions. Some experimental data have been obtained using 2D/2C PIV and unsteady pressure measurements within the diffuser, in various operating conditions. The experimental results at the lower flow rate are compared with two-dimensional numerical calculations.
