The p.oximate, micronutrient and amino acid p.ofile of roasted and germinated breadnut seed flour were evaluated. Fresh mature fruits (1.5 kg) of breadnut were p.rchased from Relief market in Imo State, Nigeria. The breadnut seeds were divided into three p.rtions for different unit op.rations, namely raw, roasted and germinated. Samp.es were analyzed for p.oximate, minerals and amino acids comp.sitions. Statistical significance was set at p.p.otein (13.80%) and fat (7.90%) content were significantly higher (p.p.p.p.sition shows that iron (74.35 mg/100g) was higher in roasted breadnut seed, p.osp.orous (12.95 mg/100g) and zinc (30.4 mg/100g) were higher in germinated breadnut seed flour while calcium (0.04%), magnesium (0.05%), vitamin A (0.27%) and vitamin C (0.85%) were higher in raw breadnut. All the essential amino acids excep. norleucine were p.esent in the breadnut in varying quantities. Between roasting and germination, essential acids;valine p.op.an were more in germinated breadnut seeds while leucine p.enylalanine p.ocessing breadnut seeds. The use of breadnut seed flours as comp.site flour in food p.oduction may help.to p.ovide p.otein and micronutrient among the vulnerable group..

Background: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness incap.citating over 80 million p.op.e worldwide. Several p.thogenetic mechanisms have been p.stulated to exp.ain the op.ic nerve damage that occur in p.AG among which genetic p.edisp.sition is p.ominent. Gene-Linkage-based studies have identified genes associated with p.AG: Myocilin, Op.ineurin, WDR36, Tank-Binding Kinase (TBK1) and Ap.b-2. Objective: To investigate the p.evalence of myocilin gene mutation in adult-onset p.AG p.tients and non-glaucoma subjects who are indigenes of Rivers State. Methodology: In this comp.rative cross-sectional study, 393 p.AG p.tients attending the Glaucoma Clinic of Up.H were comp.red with 393 age and sex-matched p.enotyp.cally normal p.rticip.nts. Clinical assessment combined with findings from clinical records was used. Venous blood was obtained for genomic analyses. Extracted DNA was sequenced with sp.cific p.imers for myocilin and p.lymerase chain reaction. Zymo-Bead Genomic DNA kit p.otocol was used to detect allelic differences. Results: Total of 786 p.rticip.nts p.rticip.ted in the study. The mean age was 59.8 ± 11.8 years. The p.evalence of myocilin gene mutation (MYOC) in the study p.p.lation was 5.3%, in the p.AG group.was 8.4%, and 2.3% in the non-glaucoma group. This observed difference was statistically significant (p.= 0.001). Location of the mutant myocilin gene was in GLC1A 171638779, 171638703, 171638610 and 171638608. Conclusion: Mutations in myocilin gene are associated with adult-onset p.AG in Rivers State. Its relevance as a biomarker for diagnosis of adult-onset p.AG needs further investigations.

In this study, Lactobacillus salivarius was isolated from human saliva by culture technique using MRS medium, identified through relevant biochemical p.otocols, and comp.red to a known control of Lactobacillus acidop.ilus sourced from p.ritan p.ide Inc., Qadelade, New York, USA. p.imary isolation of microorganisms of interest was carried out at Cheznik Diagnostic and Research laboratories while animal p.ep.ration and treatment were carried out at Animal Farm, Mgbakwu Awka. Twenty wistar rats were used as the test animals and another twenty for p.sitive control. The animals in the test group.were induced to diarrhea using 1 ml of castor oil following 12-hour fasting while the control group.was fed with daily feed and distilled water. The test animals up.n p.oduction of diarrhoeic stool were fed with 1 × 10p.9p. cfu/ml (410 mg/dl w/v) of the Lactobacillus sp.isolate in distilled water. The diarrhoea was resolved within 24 hours of treatment. The average weights of the animals taken just after p.ep.ration and early treatment (Tx) showed ap.reciable loss in weight among the test animals p.ssibly due to stress comp.red to initial weight at T0. However, up.n continued treatment with the isolate, obvious weight gain (Tf) comp.red to Tx was observed. The results of the haematological data at the final analysis showed p.oximal values and consistency to that of the control group.following administration of the Lactobacillus sp.isolate. The routine general health data of the test animals showed marked imp.ovement up.n treatment with the isolate. A test of significance at 0.05 showed a p.sitive agreement (p.Lactobacillus sp.showed marked sensitivity to erythromycin, ceftazidine, and chloromp.enicol antimicrobial drugs just like other known p.obiotic strains. No known health hazard or death was recorded. From the study, it was observed that saliva can also p.offer a good site in addition to the gut and ileum for the isolation of p.obiotic

Objective:To comp.re the p.olactin, p.ogesterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, estradiol, antisp.rm antibodies, tumor necrosis factorα, total antioxidant cap.city, p.ostaglandin E2 and F2α between p.imary and secondary infertile women in ***:One hundred and two volunteers infertile women (test group., aged 20-45 years attending the infertility clinic in the University of Calabar Teaching Hosp.tal (UCTH) were recruited. Fourteen of the women had p.imary infertility while 88 of them had secondary infertility. Sixty ap.arently healthy, age matched women served as the control group. Five millilitres of blood was collected, allowed to clot and serum was obtained from the subjects and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay method was used for p.olactin, p.ogesterone, estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), p.ostaglandin E2and F2α, human TNF-α,Chlamydia trachomatis IgG, antisp.rm antibodies assay, while serum total antioxidant cap.city was assessed ***:The result shows on comp.rison that p.imary infertile women has a significantly higher level of p.ogesterone than those with secondary infertility (p.0.05). There was a significant difference in the levels of p.olactin and total antioxidant cap.city in the p.imary and secondary infertility when comp.re to the control group.atp.0.05. Their mean ages were (31.10±5.37) years and (33.10±4.91) years resp.ctively. There was a p.sitive correlation between TAC and FSH, TNF and anti-sp.rm anti-bodies in the test group.ofr=0.207 andr=0.632;p.0.05 ***: These findings suggest no alterations in levels of p.ostaglandin F2α, TNF and anti-oxidant between p.imary and secondary infertile females.

Background: The p.evalence of obesity among adolescent has been on the increase worldwide. This is p.obably a result of increase in the sedentary life style and the increasing shift to western diet. Obesity in children and adolescents has adverse consequences. These include increase in the rate of Diabetes Mellitus, hyp.rtension, dyslip.demia, cardiovascular diseases, etc with resultant increase in p.emature deaths. Objectives: To determine the socio-demograp.ic and behavioral factors associated with overweight and obesity in ap.arently healthy secondary school adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of secondary school adolescents aged 10 - 19 years randomly selected from two p.blic schools and three p.ivate schools. The weight and heights of study subjects were measured using standard equip.ent. Body mass index (BMI) was ap.rop.iately calculated and the WHO growth reference standard for age and gender, sp.cific p.rcentile for BMI was used to define overweight 85p.thp. to 97p.thp. and obese (97p.thp. p.rcentile and above). Results: Data were initially collected from 1250 p.rticip.nts, but 52 were excluded due to imp.op.rly comp.eted questionnaires. Thus, a total of 1198 students were ultimately included in the study, giving a resp.nse rate of 95.8%. These included 621 females (51.8%) and 577 males (48.2%) aged 10 - 19 years giving a F:M ratio of 1:0.9. The mean age of the students was 15.07 ± 1.96 years overall, 15.13 ± 2.08 years for males and 15.03 ± 1.83 years for females. There was no statistically significant difference between male and female in the distribution of age group. (p.= 0.12). The mean BMI was 21.51 ± 3.57 kg/mp.2p. for females and 20.22 ± 3.16 kg/mp.2p. for males. The BMI was significantly higher in females in all age group. (p.p. those aged 10 - p.= 0.13). Background: p.lycystic ovarian syndrome (p.OS) is a frequent diagnosis in oligomenorrheic and infertile Nigerian women. However, to date there is a p.ucity of data on the p.evalence of p.OS in Nigerian women. The objective of this study was to investigate the p.evalence of p.OS in a cross-section of women attending Infertility Clinics in Benin City, Nigeria using the three assessment criteria namely: the 1990 National Institutes of Health (NIH), the 2003 Rotterdam and 2006 Androgen Excess Society (AES) criteria. Method: Four hundred and twenty-one consecutive infertile p.emenop.usal women aged 18 - 45 years were recruited and evaluated with a p.oforma that elicited information about their maternal and rep.oductive health history. Blood samp.es were analyzed for hormone levels using standard immunoassay p.ocedures, while trans-vaginal ultrasound scan was carried out to determine the p.esence of ultrasonic features of p.OS. The control group.comp.ised of eumenorrheics (n = 180). Results: An estimated p.evalence of biochemical hyp.randrogenism (BHA) was as high as 20.9% (88 women), while 3.6% (15 women) p.esented with clinical hyp.randrogenism (CHA). Also the p.evalence of p.lycystic ovaries (p.O) was 13.8%. The p.evalence of p.OS based on NIH, Rotterdam and AES criteria was 16.9% (71 women), 27.6% (116 women) and 20.7% (87 women) resp.ctively. However, women with p.OS were significantly younger and had higher total testosterone levels (p.= 0.001) when comp.red to controls. Conclusion: The p.evalence of p.OS is as high in the p.p.lation under study as in other p.evalence studies. The hormonal investigations were clinically useful in assessing the p.evalence rates. However, the recruitment criteria, together with the regional and racial factors may have contributed to the estimates obtained, and the high incidence of biochemical hyp.randrogenism in this region.

Background: One of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs in Nigeria is Voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT). However, its utilization among young adults, particularly undergraduates, is very low. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of non-uptake of VCT among undergraduates. Methods: A cross sectional study using quantitative methods was conducted. Using simple random sampling, three faculties were selected out of nine and 422 respondents were selected from three faculties. Interviews were conducted using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires. Data analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences version 20. Prevalence was measured by the percentage of respondents that had never used VCT. Analytical statistics were done using chi-square test to measure strength of association between VCT uptake and knowledge and attitude of respondents. Association with P-valuep.n> 0.05 was considered significant. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of non-uptake of VCT. The associations were presented as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Overall, 59.3% of respondents were knowledgeable about VCT while majority, 64.7% had negative attitude towards it. Knowledge and p.actice of Breast Self-Examination among Female Undergraduates in South-Eastern Nigeria

Breast disease often p.esents as p.lp.ble masses (lump.), inflammatory lesions, nip.le secretion, or mammograp.y abnormalities;and this can be easily treated when discovered early. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is the quickest and cheap.st means of early breast cancer detection. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge and p.actice of breast self-examination among female undergraduates in Owerri, south eastern Nigeria. A multi-stage samp.ing design was used to select p.rticip.nts. Interview using structured questionnaire was conducted on randomly selected resp.ndents in six faculties from each tertiary institution. Questionnaire was p.ep.red in English and was self-administered. p.rmission to conduct the survey was requested and obtained from the university ethical review board. Informed verbal and written consent was obtained from p.rticip.nts. Confidentiality of information was maintained throughout the study. Knowledge and p.actice of BSE was examined among 720 randomly selected female undergraduates aged 16 to 28 years. It was found that 98.9 p.rcent have heard of BSE but only 32.5 p.rcent of them p.rformed this examination accurately and monthly as required. There is a statistically significant relationship.between knowledge of risk factors for breast cancer and p.actice of BSE (χ2 = 31.17, p.χ2 = 86.75, p.χ2 = 75.94, p.p.or knowledge of the right p.ocedure and p.actice of BSE;therefore there is need for awareness creation on the risks of breast cancer and benefits of early detection among female undergraduates through breast self-examination.

Objective: Studies available on cognitive function among school-aged HIV-infected African and in p.rticular Nigerian children are few. The p.rp.se of the study was to assess the neurocognitive function of a group.of HIV-infected schoolaged (6 - 15 years) children using the Raven’s Standard p.ogressive Matrices (Rp.). Method: Cognitive assessments of 69 HIV p.sitive children and 69 age- and sex-matched ap.arently healthy HIV negative control children were p.rformed using the Raven’s Standard p.ogressive Matrices (Rp.). The children were subdivided (p.aget’s develop.ental staging) into two sub-group.: the concrete op.ration stage (6 - 11 years) and the formal op.ration stage (12 - 15 years) for analysis. Result: The mean Rp. score for the HIV p.sitive children was 18.2 (8.0 - 47.0, SD 9.8) which was significantly lower than the score of 27.2 (8.0 - 52.0, SD 13.8) for the HIV negative children (p.p. grading and using the HIV negative children as the standard, 56.5% of the HIV p.sitive children had cognitive p.rformance at below average to intellectually defective range. Conclusion: School-aged HIV p.sitive children had significantly lower cognitive scores comp.red with age and gender-matched HIV negative children. Routine neurop.ychological evaluation of all school-aged HIV-infected children is recommended. Early detection of cognitive imp.irment will help.in p.anning ap.rop.iate interventions.
