Background: The global drive to s.ale up mental health s.rvices.and eliminate the treatment gap requires.incorporating mental health s.rvices.into primary health care (PHC). Primary health care provides.comprehens.ve, continuous. and coordinated care and if.need be provides.ref.rrals.to higher levels.of.care. However, f.r thes. s.rvices.to meet the bas.c objective of.PHC, it is.neces.ary to determine healthcare workers. preparednes. f.r caring f.r the mentally ill. Theref.re, this.s.udy aimed to examine health workers. preparednes. f.r integrating mental healthcare into primary s.ttings.in a rural community in Nigeria. Methodology: A des.riptive res.arch des.gn was.us.d to conduct the s.udy among all 215 primary healthcare workers.within Nkanu Wes. Local Government Area (LGA). The ins.rument f.r data collection was.a s.ructured ques.ionnaire cons.ructed by the author. A pilot s.udy was.conducted on 10% of.the s.mple population. Cronbach’s.Alpha f.rmula was.us.d to es.imate the reliability coef.icient (0.85). The collected data were analys.d with des.riptive s.atis.ical f.equencies.and percentages. Res.lts. Data were analyzed us.ng the s.atis.ical Package f.r s.cial s.iences.(s.s.) vers.on 20. f.ndings.s.ow that healthcare workers. preparednes. to care f.r the mentally ill at the primary healthcare centre is.quite low. It was.als. f.und that mental illnes. is.s.ill s.redded by s.igma as.a res.lt of.poor awarenes.. Cons.quently, there is.s.ill a pers.s.ent pervas.ve belief.s.s.em that Mental illnes. is.a f.rm of.retribution f.om the gods.f.r one’s.wrong deed in the s.udy area. Conclus.on: It was.concluded that f.w of.the res.ondents.were prepared f.r the care of.the mentally ill which might be a res.lt of.poor awarenes. about mental health and the negative s.ereotype given about mental health. f.om the analys.s. it can be deduced that health workers.exhibit s.me degree of.pos.tive attitude towards.care of.the mentally ill, though, mental illnes. is.as.ociated with s.i

Methodology: A cros.-s.ctional des.riptive res.arch des.gn was.utilized to examine 200 participants.f.om a training ins.itution in Ebonyi s.ate. Data was.collected us.ng validated author cons.ructed ins.rument. Des.riptive and inf.rential s.atis.ics.were utilized to analyze data. Res.lt: Multiple logis.ic regres.ion analys.s.revealed that the variables.were s.atis.ically s.gnif.cant at χs.p>2s.p>(4) = 23.133, p s.demons.rates.that all f.ctors.(gender, marital s.atus. incentives. and f.mily type) inf.uence s.udent nurs.s. willingnes. to work with mentally ill patients.who have highly inf.ctious.dis.as.s. Conclus.on: The f.ndings.of.this.s.udy s.gges. that appropriate ins.itutional policies. additional training, and incentives.s.ould be adopted to boos. s.udent motivation.

Community Action Plan f.r Adoles.ent s.bs.ance Us. Prevention: The f.rs. s.ep to Creating a Community Participatory Action

Background: The s.udy was.des.gned to explore and catalyze the development of.action plan f.r adoles.ent s.bs.ance us. prevention in a rural community in Ebonyi s.ate, Nigeria. Methodology: This.s.udy adopted a two-phas. multi-method des.gn. The f.rs. phas. was.a quantitative as.es.ment that determined the real-lif. s.tuation of.adoles.ents. s.bs.ance us. in the community us.ng 417 res.ondents. Contemporaneous.y, the s.cond qualitative phas. f.cus.d on the development of.an action plan by community s.akeholders.f.r adoles.ent s.bs.ance us. prevention us.ng thirty (30) participants.s.lected through purpos.ve s.mpling. The reliability of.the ins.rument f.r quantitative data was.es.ablis.ed us.ng a tes. re-tes. method and computed us.ng Pears.n moment correlation. A coef.icient of.0.8 was.obtained. Validity was.es.ablis.ed f.r both quantitative and qualitative ins.ruments. The generated data were s.bjected to des.riptive s.atis.ics.whereas.the qualitative data f.om res.ondents. narratives.were analys.d thematically. Res.lt: The data revealed that participants.who have ever us.d s.bs.ances.cons.s.ed of.128 (59.5%) males.and 87 (40.5%) f.males. The f.ndings.on the opinion of.30 participants.interviewed about the cons.quences.of.s.bs.ance us. brought out majorly f.ur cons.quences.of.s.bs.ance us.. The res.lt of.catalys.ng the involvement of.community res.dents.towards.developing community action f.r adoles.ent s.bs.ance us. s.owed that the challenges.as.ociated with adoles.ents. s.bs.ance us. as.identif.ed by the participants.were dis.us.ed under one theme—living with the caus. and three elements. Conclus.on: s.bs.ance us. prevention policies.and plans.in the local community have s.rong potential f.r s.imulating local adoles.ent s.bs.ance us. prevention actions.

Anti-Epileptic Drug Pres.ription in a Ps.chiatric Hos.ital Outpatient Clinic in s.utheas. Nigeria

The optimum control of.s.izures.requires.adequate dos.ng of.appropriately s.lected anti-epileptic medications. The availability of.AEDs.in Nigeria is.limited and this.cons.rains.the pres.ription latitude of.clinicians. This.s.udy was.conducted to des.ribe the pres.ribing pattern of.anti-epileptic drugs.in the outpatient s.rvice of.a ps.chiatric f.cility in s.utheas. Nigeria. The cas. records.of.the epileptic patients.attending the outpatient clinic of.a ps.chiatric hos.ital were retrieved, reviewed and data abs.racted with a prepared prof.rma. The inf.rmation extracted include age, s.x, marital s.atus. res.dence, type of.s.izure and anti-s.izure medications.pres.ribed, f.equency of.adminis.ration and dos.ge among other variables. Of.the 178 patients.whos. pres.riptions.and cas. records.were as.es.ed, males.cons.ituted 62.9% and f.males.37.1%. Mos. of.the patients.were s.ngle (78.1%) and the group had a mean age of.25.6 ± 10.9 years. Generalized tonic-clonic s.izures.predominated (61.2%) among the s.izure types. whils. complex partial s.izure type was.identif.ed in 35.4% of.the patients. Patient diagnos.s.relied heavily on the us. of.clinical des.ription alone. About 92.7% of.the patients.were treated with monotherapy, whereas.7.3% received two anti-epileptic drug combinations. Carbamazepine was.the mos. f.equently pres.ribed drug, and was.utilized in the treatment of.87.9% of.patients.receiving monotherapy and 92.3% of.individuals.receiving two drug combinations. Adjunctive medications.like benzodiazepines.were rarely utilis.d to improve the ef.ect of.the AEDs. The patients.that received polytherapy could only be dis.inguis.ed f.om thos. that received monotherapy by higher f.equency of.epileptic auras.and higher mean dos. of.AEDs.per day. The predominant us. of.monotherapy is.in accordance with the treatment recommendations.and needs.to be encouraged. The greater us. of.carbamazepine is.probably related to its.perceived benef.ts.in the control of.behavioural s.mptom

Background: The s.igma of.epileps. is.pervas.ve in developing country contexts.and negatively af.ects.the ps.chological and s.cial wellbeing of.its.s.f.erers. The experience of.s.igma varies.acros. s.ttings.and probably relate to dis.as. s.verity and s.cial characteris.ics. This.s.udy s.ught to des.ribe the extent and correlates.of.perceived and enacted s.igma among outpatients.with epileps.. Methods. The participants.were cons.cutively pres.nting epileps. outpatients.in a tertiary f.cility that attended clinic regularly and had no overt medical or ps.chiatric co-morbidities. The patients.were interviewed with a s.mi-s.ructured ques.ionnaire. Res.lts. There were 93 participants.with a mean age of.30.2 ± 10.3 years.and 57.0% were males. The experience of.s.igma was.reported by 46.2% and 67.7% of.the participants.f.r perceived and enacted s.igma, res.ectively. Over one-third of.the patients.had s.f.ered burns.or a s.milar injury in the pas.. The correlates.of.perceived s.igma were rural res.dence, lower levels.of.education, and longer duration of.illnes.. Gender, age and f.equency of.s.izures.were not s.atis.ically s.gnif.cant determinants. The correlates.of.enacted s.igma were being s.ngle, older age, rural res.dence, and longer duration of.epileps.. A pas. his.ory of.burns.and dis.los.re of.epileps. to individuals.outs.de the f.mily added to the likelihood of.experiencing s.igma. Conclus.on: The burden of.epileps. related s.cial s.igma is.high in Nigeria. Cultural s.ereotypes.and mis.onception add to this. There is.need f.r appropriate culture-congruent educational interventions.to provide the right inf.rmation about epileps. and debunk the mis.onceptions.and myths.as.ociated with the condition. This.will need to be coupled with as.ute clinical management of.cas.s.and active cas. f.nding. Both qualitative and longitudinal quantitative s.udies.would be required to deepen our unders.anding of.the lived reality of.grappling with s.igma in our s.tting.
