AIM: To investigate the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms in the uridine-diphosphoglucurono-syltransferase (UGT) UGT1A7 and UGT1A1 genes and patients suffering from colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: A case-control study was designed in order to investigate the genotypes of the UGT1A7 and UGT1A1 genes, which were identified by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method, for 268 CRC patients and 441 healthy controls. RESULTS: The results of simple logistical regressions revealed odds ratios (ORs) of 1.97 (P<0.001),1.91 (P<0.001),and 2.03 (P<0.001) for patients who carried the UGT1A7*1/*3 genotype,UGT1A7*3 allele,and variant-211 UGT1A1 *** interaction of UGT1A7*3 allele and variant-211 UGT1A1 allele produced an additive effect on the risk for the development of CRC [observed OR (2.34) greater than expected OR (1.59)]. For the 268 patients, the results of simple logistical regressions indicated that the OR of developing metastases was 4.90 (P<0.001) and 4.89 (P<0.001) for the individuals possessing UGT1A7*3 allele and variant-211 UGT1A1 allele, respectively. The results of multivariate logistical regressions confirmed these findings (OR = 2.51, P= 0.01; and OR=2.71,P=0.01,respectively).The interaction of these two variants resulted in an additive effect on the risk for metastases amongst patients [observed OR (6.83) greater than expected OR (4.56)]. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, carriage of the UGT1A7*3 allele, as well as variant-211 UGT1A1 allele represents a risk factor for the development of, and a determinant for, metastases associated with CRC patients.

Tetrandrine (TET), a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid purified and identified an active ingredient in a Chinese medicinal herb, Radix Stephanae tetrandrae, has been used traditionally for the treatment of congestive circulatory disorder and inflammatory diseases. TET, together with a few of its structural analogues, has long been demon-strated to have antihypertensive action in clinical as well as animal studies. Presumably, the primary anti-hyperten-sive action of TET is due to its vasodilatory properties. TET prevents or inhibits vascular contraction induced by membrane depolarization with KC1 or α-adrenoceptor activation with phenylephrine (PE). TET (30 μmol/L) also inhibits the release of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) as well as NO production by inducible NO synthase. TET apparently inhibits multiple Ca2+ entry pathways as demonstrated in cell types lacking the L-type Ca2+ channels. In cardiac muscle cells, TET inhibits both L- and T-type Ca2+ channels. Convolutional neural networks, which have achieved outstanding performance in image recognition, have been extensively applied to action recognition. The mainstream approaches to video understanding can be categorized into two-dimensional and three-dimensional convolutional neural networks. Although three-dimensional convolutional filters can learn the temporal correlation between different frames by extracting the features of multiple frames simultaneously, it results in an explosive number of parameters and calculation cost. Methods based on two-dimensional convolutional neural networks use fewer parameters;they often incorporate optical flow to compensate for their inability to learn temporal relationships. However, calculating the corresponding optical flow results in additional calculation cost;further, it necessitates the use of another model to learn the features of optical flow. We proposed an action recognition framework based on the two-dimensional convolutional neural network;therefore, it was necessary to resolve the lack of temporal relationships. To expand the temporal receptive field, we proposed a multi-scale temporal shift module, which was then combined with a temporal feature difference extraction module to extract the difference between the features of different frames. Finally, the model was compressed to make it more compact. We evaluated our method on two major action recognition benchmarks: the HMDB51 and UCF-101 datasets. Before compression, the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 72.83% on the HMDB51 dataset and 96.25% on the UCF-101 dataset. Following compression, the accuracy was still impressive, at 95.57% and 72.19% on each dataset. The final model was more compact than most related works.

Alternatively activated macrophages （M2 macrophages） promote central nervous system regeneration. Our previous study demonstrated that treatment with peripheral nerve grafts and fibroblast growth factor-1 recruited more M2 macrophages and improved partial functional recovery in spinal cord transected rats. The migration of macrophages is matrix metalloproteinase （MMP） dependent. We used a general inhibitor of MMPs to influence macrophage migration, and we examined the migration of macrophage populations and changes in spinal function. Rat spinal cords were completely transected at Ts, and 5 mm of spinal cord was removed （group T）. In group R, spinal cord-transected rats received treatment with fibroblast grow th factor- 1 and peripheral nerve grafts. In group RG, rats received the same treatment as group R with the addition of 200 μM GM6001 （an MMP inhibitor） to the fibrin mix. We found that MMP-9, but not MMP- 2, was upregulated in the graft area of rats in group R. Local application of the MMP inhibitor resulted in a reduction in the ratio of arginase-1 （M2 macrophage subset）/inducible nitric oxide synthase-postive cells. When the MMP inhibitor was applied at 8 weeks postoperation, the partial functional recovery observed in group R was lost. This effect was accompanied by a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in the nerve graft. These results suggested that the arginase-1 positive population in spinal cord transected rats is a migratory cell population rather than the phenotypic conversion of early iNOS^＋ cells and that the migration of the arginase-1^＋ population could be regulated locally. Simultaneous application of MMP in- hibitors or promotion of MMP activity for spinal cord injury needs to be considered if the coadministered treatment involves M2 recruitment.

A perturbation analysis based on equations of motion in Lagrangian form is presented for the oscillatory and time-mean viscous flows induced by a propagating wave of small amplitude in an annulus with a viscoelastic outer wall. Owing to the steady streaming effect, the existence of a catheter in a blood vessel brings in an additional steady pressure gradient, a correction to that predicted by the linear theory, and an additional steady shear stress, which may increase the possibility of hemolysis of red blood cells.

Resource Efficient Hardware Implementation for Real-Time Traffic Sign Recognition

Traffic sign recognition (TSR, or Road Sign Recognition, RSR) is one of the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) devices in modern cars. To concern the most important issues, which are real-time and resource efficiency, we propose a high efficiency hardware implementation for TSR. We divide the TSR procedure into two stages, detection and recognition. In the detection stage, under the assumption that most German traffic signs have red or blue colors with circle, triangle or rectangle shapes, we use Normalized RGB color transform and Single-Pass Connected Component Labeling (CCL) to find the potential traffic signs efficiently. For Single-Pass CCL, our contribution is to eliminate the “merge-stack” operations by recording connected relations of region in the scan phase and updating the labels in the iterating phase. In the recognition stage, the Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) is used to generate the descriptor of the signs, and we classify the signs with Support Vector Machine (SVM). In the HOG module, we analyze the required minimum bits under different recognition rate. The proposed method achieves 96.61% detection rate and 90.85% recognition rate while testing with the GTSDB dataset. Our hardware implementation reduces the storage of CCL and simplifies the HOG computation. Main CCL storage size is reduced by 20% comparing to the most advanced design under typical condition. By using TSMC 90 nm technology, the proposed design operates at 105 MHz clock rate and processes in 135 fps with the image size of 1360 × 800. The chip size is about 1 mm2 and the power consumption is close to 8 mW. Therefore, this work is resource efficient and achieves real-time requirement.

Pain and itch are unpleasant sensations that often accompany infections caused by viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal pathogens. Recent studies show that sensory neurons are able to directly detect pathogens to mediate pain and itch. Nociceptor and pruriceptor neurons respond to pathogen-associated molecular patterns, including Toll-like receptor ligands, N-formyl peptides, and bacterial toxins. Other pathogens are able to silence neuronal activity to produce analgesia during infection. Pain and itch could lead to neuronal modulation of the immune system or behavioral avoidance of future patho- gen exposure. Conversely, pathogens could modulate neuronal signaling to potentiate their pathogenesis and facilitate their spread to other hosts. Defining how pathogens modulate pain and itch has critical implications for sensory neurobiology and our understanding of host- microbe interactions.

BACKGROUND:There is a constant and global shortage of deceased-donor organs for *** to identify areas for securing potential deceased-donor organs may improve the supply and hence benefit more patients in need of transplantation. METHODS:We looked into the disparity of the number of deceased-donor liver transplantation(DDLT)performed at our hospital on different days of the weeks from January 2000 to the end of December 2009(237 DDLTs).The number of DDLT performed on each day was compared with the other days of the week. RESULTS:It was apparent that there were fewer DDLTs on Mondays,as shown by the numbers of DDLT performed on different days of the week in an ascending order:Monday 18(7.6%),Sunday 30(12.7%),Thursday 34(14.3%),Friday 36(15.2%),Wednesday 38(16.0%),Tuesday 40(16.9%), and Saturday 41(17.3%).The difference reached statistical significance when Monday was compared with Tuesday (P=0.019),Wednesday(P=0.010),Friday(P=0.021),and Saturday(P=0.007).It was twice as unlikely a DDLT would be performed on Monday as compared with other *** a trend did not change even with an increase in the number of deceased-donor liver grafts in the last *** consent to donation was obtained from the donor family the day before DDLT,fewer consents were thus obtained on ***:These findings suggested that deceased-donor organ donation activities were less active on Sundays and could be *** further raises the concern of possible wastage of potential cases of organ donation.
