AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of 4 d' anti-Helicobacter pylori therapy on the H pylori-infected Mongolian gerbils based on physiological and pathological changes. METHODS: We used 6-wk-old male gerbils orally inoculated with H pylori (ATCC43504, 2×108 CFU/mL). Seven weeks after H pylori inoculation, the animals of study group received 4 d' anti-H pylori triple therapy (H pylori-eradicated group). Seven days later, all animals of the H pylori-eradicated and control groups (H pylori-infected & H pylori-uninfected groups) were sacrificed. We examined gastric mucosal lesions macroscopically, studied gastritis microscopically and determined the stomach weight ratio, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and prostaglandin (PG) E2 level. RESULTS: The results showed that both macroscopic and histological gastric damages were significantly less in H pylori-eradicated group than H pylori-infected group. Stomach weight ratio, MPO activity and PGE2 levels were significantly higher in H pylori-infected group than those in the other two groups. CONCLUSION: Four days' anti-H pylori therapy was effective in the improvement of H pylori-induced gastric lesions in Mongolian gerbils.

AIM: To examine the effect of eradication of Hellcobacter pylori prior to usage of NSAIDs, by investigating gastric inflammatory activity, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, prostaglandin (PG) E_2 synthesis in H Pylori-infected, and H pylori-eradicated gerbils followed by administration of indomethacin and rofecoxib. METHODS: Six-week-old male gerbils were orally inoculated with H pylori. Seven weeks later, anti-H pylori triple therapy and vehicle were given to gerbils respectively and followed by oral indomethacin (2 mg/kg·d) or rofecoxib (10 mg/kg·d) for 2 wk. We examined the area of lesions, gastric inflammatory activity, PGE_2 synthesis and MPO activity in the stomach. RESULTS: In indomethacin and rofecoxib-treated gerbils, the following results were obtained in H pylori-infected group vs H pylori-eradicated group respectively: hyperplasia area of the stomach (mm^2): 82.4±9.2 vs 13.9±3.5 (P＜0.05), 30.5±5.1 vs 1.3±0.6 (P＜0.05); erosion and ulcer area (mm^2): 14.4±4.9 vs 0.86±0.5 (P＜0.05), 1.3±0.6 vs0.4±0.3 (P＜0.05); score of gastritis: 7.0±0.0 vs3.6±0.5 (P＜0.05), 7.0±0.0 vs 2.7±0.5 (P＜0.05); MPO activity (μmol H_2O_2/min/g tissue): 104.7±9.2 vs9.0±2.3(P＜0.05), 133.5±15.0 vs2.9±0.7 (P＜0.05); PGE_2 synthesis (pg/mg wet weight/min): 299.2±81.5 vs102.8±26.2 (P＜0.05), 321.4±30.3 vs 11.9±4.8(P＜0.05). CONCLUSION: Eradication of H pylori reduced gastric damage of NSAID-treated Mongolian gerbils. Rofecoxib caused less severe gastric damage than indomethacin in H pylori-eradicated gerbils.

AIM： To assess the efficacy of premedicaton with pronase or N-acetylcysteine （NAC） at 20 min before upper gastrointestinal （UGI） endoscopy and to determine whether pronase or NAC pretreatment influences the reliability of the rapid urease test. METHODS： A total of 146 patients were prospectively and randomly assigned into the study groups according to different premedications before endoscopy. One endoscopist assessed mucosal visibility （MV） with scores ranged from 1 to 4 at four sites in the stomach. The sum of the MV scores from these four locations was defined as the total mucosal visibility （TMV） score. Identification of Hpylori was performed using CLO test, histology, and serology. RESULTS： The Group with pronase premedication had a significantly lower TMV score than did the groups with gascon and gascon water （P 〈 0.001 and P 〈 0.01, respectively）. The group with NAC had a significantly lower TMV score than the group with gascon （P 〈 0.01） and a trend of a lower MV score than the group with gascon water （P = 0.06）. The THV score did not significantly differ between the group with pronase and the group with NAC （P = 0.39 and P = 0.14, respectively）. The sensitivity and specifidty of the CLO test were 92.5% and 93.9%, respectively, in groups premedicated with pronase and NAC together.CONCLUSION： Premedication with pronase or NAC at 20 min before UGI endoscopy improves the mucosal visibility of the stomach. Neither pronase nor NAC produces any obvious interference with the CLO test for the identification of H pylori infection.

Scouring and deposition processes resulting from variable rainfall and typhoon occurrence in tropical climatic conditions induce significant changes in the riverbeds of *** the Pachang River of western Taiwan,severe damage occurs during typhoons due to large and sudden variations in discharge,erosion,sediment transport and *** order to simulate this process,the NETSTARS numerical modeling tool was used in the present *** influence of existing and planned check dam structures on flow control was also analyzed to determine their capacity to resist river erosion or to not be buried beneath *** only does the modeling tool allow calculation of the erosion-deposition behavior at the scale of the whole river,but it also provides local determination of the optimum location and characteristics such as foundation depth and lateral encroachment of future check *** results of a 10-year,long-term modeling simulation in terms of riverbed stability and scouring potential thus provide insights about unsafe future behavior at 4 *** numerical model provides a better general understanding and useful information for the optimal prevention of both the scouring damage and the burial related to sediment deposition with large changes in discharge and sediment transport.

BACKGROUND Retroperitoneal high-grade serous carcinoma(HGSC)of unknown origin is a sporadic tumor that can originate from ovarian ***,we report the case of a woman with retroperitoneal HGSC of unknown origin and describe how she was diagnosed and *** SUMMARY A 71-year-old female presented with the tumor marker CA125 elevated to 1041.9 U/mL upon a regular health *** tomography revealed retroperitoneal lymph node ***,positron emission tomography scanning revealed lesions with increased F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at the *** a result,she underwent laparoscopic lymph node resection,and pathology revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma with CK7(+),PAX8(+),WT1(+),PR(-),and p53 mutational loss of expression,indicating that the origin may be from the *** patient was admitted to our ward and underwent laparoscopic staging;however,the pathological results were *** the suspicion of retroperitoneal HGSC of unknown origin,chemotherapy and targeted therapy were *** marker levels decreased after *** We present a case of HGSC of unknown origin managed using retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy,staging surgery,chemotherapy,and targeted therapy.

Effect of Fe metal on the growth of silicon oxide nanowires

Silicon oxide （SiOx） nanowires are generally grown on Si substrate under the catalysis of Au in N2 atmosphere at elevated temperatures. Because the price of Au metal is quite high, Fe metal is then used to replace a part of Au for catalyzing the growth of SiOx nanowires. The results show that the Fe film can be used as the diffusion barrier of Au. SiOx nanowires are grown on Au/Fe/Si substrate at 1030℃. Under the catalysis of Fe/Au, the efficiency for the growth of SiOx nanowires is promoted.

The liver, which is a metabolic organ, plays a pivotal role in tolerance induction. Hepatic stellate cells(Hp SCs), which are unique non-parenchymal cells, exert potent immunoregulatory activity during cotransplantation with allogeneic islets effectively protecting the islet allografts from rejection. Multiple mechanisms participate in the immune tolerance induced by Hp SCs, including the marked expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs), attenuation of effector T cell functions and augmentation of regulatory T cells. Hp SC conditioned MDSC-based immunotherapy has been conducted in mice with autoimmune disease and the results show that this technique may be promising. This article demonstrates how Hp SCs orchestrate both innate immunity and adaptive immunity to build a negative network that leads to immune tolerance.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of OGG1(Ser326Cys, 11657A/G, and Arg154His) and APE1(Asp148Glu, and T-656G) polymorphisms on colorectal cancer(CRC) ***: We enrolled 727 cases newly diagnosed with colorectal adenocarcinoma and 736 age- and sex-matched healthy controls from a medical center in Taiwan. Genomic DNA isolated from the buffy coat was used for genotyping through polymerase chain reaction. Unconditional logistic regressions were used for calculating ORs and 95%CIs to determine the association between the genetic polymorphisms and CRC risk. Haplotype frequencies were estimated using PHASE software. Moreover, stratification analyses onthe basis of sex, age at diagnosis, and tumor subsite and stage were ***: The CRC risk was higher in patients with the OGG1 326Ser/Cys + Cys/Cys genotype(OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.03-1.85, P = 0.030), particularly high in patients with stage Ⅲ + Ⅳ cancer(OR = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.03-2.13) compared with patients with the Ser/Ser genotype. In addition, OGG1 11657 G allele carriers had a 41% reduced CRC risk among stage 0-Ⅱ patients(OR = 0.59, 95%CI: 0.35-0.98). The CRC risk was significantly higher among females with the APE1 Glu allele(OR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.02-1.96). The APE1 148Glu/-656 G haplotype was also associated with a significant CRC risk in females(OR = 1.36, 95%CI: 1.03-1.78).CONCLUSION: OGG1 and APE1 polymorphisms are associated with stage- and sex-specific risk of CRC in the Taiwan Residents population.
