Distinctions of dendritic behavior influenced by constant pressure and periodic pressure

The distinctions of dendritic morphology and sidebranching behavior when solidified under atmosphere pressure,constant pressure which is higher than atmosphere pressure (hereinafter referred to as constant pressure) and periodic pressure were investigated using 3-D phase field *** growing at atmosphere pressure,side branches (secondary dendritic arms) are *** solidified under constant pressure with a relatively high value,side branches are much more luxuriant,with more developed high-order side *** applied with periodic pressure,resonant sidebranching happens,leading to many more regular side branches and the smallest secondary dendritic arm spacing (SDAS) in the three *** significant difference in dendritic morphology is associated with tip velocity modulated by total undercooling including pressure and temperature *** the case of constant pressure,tip velocity increases linearly with total undercooling,and it varies periodically in periodic pressure *** different variation trend in tip velocity is the reason for the distinct dendrite growth behavior in different *** the phenomenon in constant pressure case where the dendrite grows faster with higher pressure,the dendrite grows slower under periodic pressure with higher amplitude,resulting in less developed primary dendrite and side *** is influenced by tip remelting due to low undercooling or even negative *** is revealed that the accelerated velocity of tip remelting increases with the decline of *** greater the amplitude of periodic pressure,the faster the tip remelting velocity during one *** is the reason why the average tip velocity decreases with the rise of amplitude of periodic pressure.

Statin use and the risk of colorectal cancer: A population-based case-control study

AIM: To investigate whether the use of statins is associated with colorectal cancer risk. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study in Taiwan. Data were retrospectively collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Cases consisted of all patients who were aged 50 years and older and had a first-time diagnosis of colorectal cancer between the period 2005 and 2008. The controls were matched to cases by age, sex, and index date. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: We examined 1156 colorectal cancer cases and 4624 controls. The unadjusted ORs for any statin prescription was 1.10 (95% CI = 0.94-1.30) and the adjusted OR was 1.09 (95% CI = 0.91-1.30). When statin use was categorized by cumulative dose, the adjusted ORs were 0.99 (95% CI = 0.78-1.27) for the group with cumulative statin use below 105 defined daily doses (DDDs); 1.07 (95% CI = 0.78-1.49) for the group with cumulative statin use between 106 and 298.66 DDDs; and 1.30 (95% CI = 0.96-1.75) for the group with cumulative statin use of 298.66 DDDs or more compared with nonusers. CONCLUSION: This study does not provide support for a protective effect of statins against colorectal cancer.

Differences in expression of retinal proteins between diabetic and normal rats

AIM： To compare and identify the differences in expression of retinal proteins between normal and diabetic rats, and to analyze the molecular pathogenetic mechanisms of retinal diseases caused by diabetes.METHODS： Changes in protein expression of retinal tissues from diabetic and normal rats were observed using 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis （2-DE）. Some protein spots exhibiting statistically significant variations （P 〈 0.05） were selected randomly and identified by tandem mass spectrometry and analyzed by bioinformatics.RESULTS： 2-DE showed that the expression was upregulated in 5 retinal proteins, down-regulated in 23retinal proteins, and disappeared in 8 retinal *** spots were identified from the 36 spots by tandem mass spectrometry （MS/MS） and analyzed by bioinformatics. Guanylate kinase 1, triosephosphate isomerase 1, ATP synthase subunit d, albumin and dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 2 played an important role in signal transduction. Triosephosphate isomerase 1, crystallin alpha B, ATP synthase subunit d and peroxiredoxin 6 were involved in energy metabolism of retinal tissues. Guanylate kinase 1 played an important role in photoexcitation of retinal rod photoreceptor *** crystallin beta A1 plays a role in diabetic retinas is unknown so far.CONCLUSION： There are differences in expression of retinal proteins between diabetic and normal *** proteins may be involved in the mechanisms and prognosis of retinal diseases caused by diabetes.

Poorly expandable common bile duct with stones on endoscopic retrograde cholangiography

AIM： To describe characteristics of a poorly expandable （PE） common bile duct （CBD） with stones on en- doscopic retrograde cholangiography.METHODS： APE bile duct was characterized by a rigid and relatively narrowed distal CBD with retro- grade dilatation of the non-PE segment. Between 2003 and 2006, endoscopic retrograde cholangiography （ERC） images and chart reviews of 1213 patients with newly diagnosed CBD stones were obtained from the computer database of Therapeutic Endoscopic Centerin Chang Gung Memoria acteristic PE bile duct on Hospital. Patients with char ERC were identified from the database. Data of the patients as well as the safety and technical success of therapeutic ERC were collected and analyzed retrospectively.RESULTS： A total of 30 patients with CBD stones and characteristic PE segments were enrolled in this study. The median patient age was 45 years （range, 20 to 92 years）; 66.7% of the patients were men. The di ameters of the widest non-PE CBD segment, the PE segment, and the largest stone were 14.3 ± 4.9 mm, 5.8±1.6 mm, and 11.2±4.7 mm, respectively. The length of the PE segment was 39.7±15.4 mm （range, 12.3 mm to 70.9 mm）. To remove the CBD stone（s） completely, mechanical lithotripsy was required in 25 （83.3%） patients even though the stone size was not as large as were the difficult stones that have been described in the literature. The stone size and stone/ PE segment diameter ratio were associated with the need for lithotripsy. Post-ERC complications occurred in 4 cases： pancreatitis in 1, cholangitis in 2, and an im- pacted Dormia basket with cholangitis in 1. Two （6.7%） of the 28 patients developed recurrent CBD stones at follow-up （50±14 mo） and were successfully managed with therapeutic ERC.CONCLUSION： Patients with a PE duct frequently require mechanical lithotripsy for stones extraction, To retrieve stones successfully and avoid complications, these patients should be identified during ERC,

Relationship between red blood cell distribution width levels and atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients

Background Information on the relationship between red blood cell distribution width(RDW)and atrial fibrillation(AF)in patients with essential hypertension are *** study aimed to assess the relationship between AF and RDW in hypertensive *** We enrolled 432 hypertensive patients,including 350 AF patients and 82 patients as ***'demographic,clinical,laboratory and echocardiographic characteristics were *** AF patients were further divided into the persistent and paroxysmal AF *** were monitored to identify the cardiac rhythm during blood sampling,and based on the rhythm,the paroxysmal AF group was categorized into the presence(with AF rhythm during blood sampling)and absence(with sinus rhythm during blood sampling)*** The AF group had elevated RDW levels than the controls(12.7%±0.8%vs.12.4%±0.7%,P=0.002),and the persistent AF subgroup had higher RDW levels than the paroxysmal AF subgroup(12.9%±0.8%vs.12.6%±0.8%,P=0.007).Furthermore,in the paroxysmal AF group,the presence group had higher RDW levels than the absence group(13.0%±0.6%vs.12.5%±0.9%,P=0.001).There was no significant difference in RDW levels between the persistent AF subgroup and presence group of the paroxysmal AF subgroup(P=0.533)and between the absence group of the paroxysmal AF subgroup and control group(P=0.262).In multivariate regression analysis,in hypertensive patients,the presence of AF rhythm is an independent predictor for increased RDW concentration(P=0.001).Conclusions The RDW may be associated with the presence of AF rhythm,which implies the importance of maintaining the sinus rhythm in hypertensive patients.

Mechanisms underlying attenuation of apoptosis of cortical neurons in the hypoxic brain by flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi

Flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, an antioxidant, markedly improve memory impairments and neuronal injuries. In the present study, primary cortical neurons of rats were exposed to potassium cyanide to establish a model of in vitro neural cell apoptosis. Inhibition of apoptosis by flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baical- ensis Georgi at concentrations of 18.98, 37.36, and 75.92 gg/mL was detected using this model. These flavonoids dramatically increased cell survival, inhibited cell apoptosis and excessive pro- duction of malondialdehyde, and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and Na＋-K＊-ATPase in primary cortical neurons exposed to potassium cyanide. The flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi were originally found to have a polyhydric structure and to protect against cerebral hypoxia in in vitro and in vivo models, including hypoxia induced by potassium cyanide or cerebral ischemia. The present study suggests that flavonoids from the stems and leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi exert neuroprotective effects via modulation of oxidative stress, such as malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and Na＋-K＋-ATPase disorders induced by potassium cyanide.

Cancer stem-like cells directly participate in vasculogenic mimicry channels in triple-negative breast cancer

Objective: Vasculogenic mimicry(VM) channels that are lined by tumor cells are a functional blood supply in malignant ***, the role of VM-initiating cells remains poorly understood. Cancer stem-like cells(CSCs) are positively correlated with VM. In this study, triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC) enriched with CSCs was used to investigate the relationship between VM and ***: The expression of several CSC markers was detected by immunohistochemistry in 100 human breast cancer *** clinical significance of CSC markers and the relationship between VM, CSCs, breast cancer subtypes, and VM-associated proteins were analyzed. CD133+ and ALDH+ human and mouse TNBC cells were isolated by FACS to examine the ability of VM formation and the spatial relationship between VM and ***: CSCs were associated with TNBC subtype and VM in human invasive breast cancer. CSCs in TNBC MDA-MB-231 cells formed more VM channels and expressed more molecules promoting VM than the non-TNBC MCF-7 cells in vitro. MDA-MB-231 cells that encircled VM channels on Matrigel expressed CD133. Moreover, CSCs were located near VM channels in the 3D reconstructed blood supply system in human TNBC grafts. The CD133+ and ALDH+ cells isolated from TA2 mouse breast cancer formed more VM channels in ***: CSCs line VM channels directly. Additionally, CSCs provide more VM-related molecules to synergize VM formation. The signaling pathways that control CSC differentiation may also be potential treatment targets for TNBC.

Abstract The development of physically crosslinked hydrogels with excellent mechanical and sensing properties is of importance for expanding the practical applications of intelligent soft hydrogel ***,after copolymerization of hydroxyl-containing amino acid derivative N-acryloyl serine(ASer)with acrylamide(AM),we introduce Zr4+through an immersion strategy to construct metal ion-toughened non-covalent crosslinked hydrogels(with tensile strength of up to 5.73 MPa).It is found that the synergistic coordination of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups with Zr^(4+)substantially increases the crosslinking density of the hydrogels,thereby imparting markedly superior mechanical properties compared to hydroxyl-free Zr^(4+)-crosslinked hydrogels,such as N-acryloyl alanine(AAla)copolymerized with AM hydrogels(with tensile strength of 2.98 MPa)Through the adjustment of the composition of the copolymer and the density of coordination bonds,the mechanical properties of the hydrogels can be modulated over a wide ***,due to the introduction of metal ions and the dynamic nature of coordination bonds,the hydrogels also exhibit excellent sensing performance and good self-recovery properties,paving the way for the development of flexible electronic substrates with outstanding comprehensive performances.
