Lan. use chan.e affects soil fun.tion. an. its capacity to provide ecosystem services. Though much of the tropics are experien.in. accelerated in.reases in.lan. use chan.e, associated impacts of such chan.es are poorly un.erstood an. studied. This study assessed the exten. to which lan. use chan.es affect the soil ecosystem fun.tion. in.a rain.orest zon. of south eastern.n.geria. Soil samples were collected from 24 sample location. in.selected n.tural forest, cashew an. palm plan.ation.. Samples were an.lyzed in.triplicate in.the laboratory for geochemical an.lysis, after which the result was subjected to statistical an.lysis—An.VA, correlation.an. regression. Forest carbon.had higher % mean.carbon.con.en.;though there was n. sign.fican. differen.e (F (2, 21) = .246, p = .784) in.carbon.level across lan. uses. R value of .301 showed low correlation.between.% carbon. organ.c matter an. % loss in.ign.tion. Furthermore, R2 value of 9.1% total variation.in.the depen.en. variable could on.y be explain.d by the in.epen.en. variables. CEC, n.trogen. Potassium an. Phosphorus con.en. of the lan. uses did n.t differ sign.fican.ly: CEC (F (2, 21) = .844, p (.44);n.trogen.(.243), p (.79), Potassium (.140), p (.87), Phosphorus (.783), p (.47). This showed that there was n. sign.fican. variation.in.soil fertility of the lan. uses, although n.tural forest had higher con.en.ration. for these variables. Across the lan. uses, soil texture equally had n. sign.fican. variation.: % san. (F (2, 21) = .320, p (.729) % clay (.430), p (.656), % silt (.043), p (.958). Soil carbon.was seen.to be more en.an.ed in.n.tural forest ecosystems than.other lan. uses. Though plan.ation. had reduced capacities to provide ecosystem fun.tion., establishin. such in.modified lan.scapes is still advocated as they can.coexist with such an. yet en.ure ecosystem fun.tion..

Tropical ecosystems sequester vast amoun.s of carbon.but remain.much varied across differen. lan.scapes. In.order to provide estimates on.carbon.storage for the ecosystem an. show the role of forest structure an. en.iron.en.al factors in.determin.n. abovegroun. an. soil carbon.of a rain.orest lan.scape, forest in.en.ory was con.ucted across 30 forest plots. Each of the plots measured 50 m × 50 m an. was used to iden.ify an. measure tree species ≥ 10 cm diameter at breast height (DBH measured at 130cm). Soil samples were collected for up to 30 cm deep at the four edges an. then.the middle of each plot, bulked for an.lysis an. tested in.the laboratory. Abovegroun. carbon.estimates ran.ed from 8.18 - 91.29 t/ha across the ecosystem an. were similar with carbon.storage in.tropical lan.scapes. With variation. in.stem den.ity, basal area an. structure across the region. much of the carbon.capacity across the ecosystem was much varied (F (29, 2127) = 3.794, p = 0.000). En.iron.en.al variables (main.y edaphic variables) were n.t positively correlated with soil carbon.an. did n.t largely determin. its storage an. variation. The n.ed to reduce disturban.es (which are a main.driver of disparity in.biomass carbon.storage) across the region.an. across tropical ecosystems was advocated as a pathway to en.an.in. higher carbon.sequestration.
