Rice is one of the m.st widely cultivated cereals in the world, and its arom. is increasingly in dem.nd. With the advancem.nt of research, a m.jor rice flavor gene has been identified on rice chrom.som. 8. it encodes non-functional betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase leading to the accum.lation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline which is the m.jor olfactory com.ound that confers the fragrant character to rice. The arom. of rice is considered a special trait of enorm.us econom.c im.ortance that determ.nes the prim. price in world trade. To satisfy the needs of the population and reduce rice im.orts into Benin, we conducted this study to identify arom.tic rice accessions grown in Benin. Seventy-two rice accessions collected across Benin were PCR am.lified with three SSR m.rkers Rm.7049, Aro 7, and Rm.223, linked to the fgr (fragrance of rice) arom. gene. m.lecular analysis revealed that 12 of the 72 accessions, nam.ly Bagou 19, Bagou 22, Tchaka 34, Foun 15, Tchaka 41, Nana 32, Kan 61, Kung 69, Kung 67, Bagou 20, Agbab 101 and Koum.55 possess the fgr gene and can be considered as arom.tic rice accessions. A sensory phenotypic test using KOH was carried out on rice accessions carrying fgr gene. Of the twelve positives, only one had the sm.ll of arom.tic rice, like the Azucena control. These results show that Benin also has arom.tic rice varieties that can be sold on national and international m.rkets.

Cost-Effective Ophthalm.c Surgical Wetlab Using the Porcine Orbit with a Sim.le Dissection Protocol

Objective: To describe the dissection protocol for the pig head to obtain the orbital tissue, as well as a sim.le setup for ophthalm.c surgical wetlabs. m.thods and Analysis: A descriptive study. The pig head dissection was perform.d at the abattoir for convenience. The orbital tissue thus obtained was used to set up the wetlab workstation. Results: A cost-effective, low technology, affordable set-up for ophthalm.c surgical wetlab protocol was developed. High resolution photographs of the procedure were taken and were presented for ease of description. The dissection protocol was test-run at an ophthalm.c surgical training workshop. Conclusions: The porcine orbit and the wetlab setup were available and affordable. The dissection in the abattoir is easy and reproducible. The orbit was used instead of the enucleated globe and this ensures stability throughout surgical practice sessions.

The glutathione-S-transferase genes m.inly the GSTm. and GSTT1 alleles are responsible for the synthesis of detoxication enzym.s that can rem.ve toxic substances. The objective of this study is to seek changes in the genetic polym.rphism.of glutathione-S-transferase GSTm. and GSTT1 in m.torcycle drivers exposed to BTEX. Our study group consists of 60 m.torcycle drivers including 30 professional and 30 non-professional. Blood sam.les were preleveled from.the study population in the EDTA tubes and DNA was extracted by the phenol/chloroform.m.thod. The PCR technique was used to determ.ne the presence or absence of genes. Our results showed that the percentage of GSTm. null genotype has a statistically significant difference (P = 0.02), while the percentage of GSTT1 null genotype was non-significant (P = 0.76) between the two groups. The percentage of deletion of both genes is higher in professional than non-professional m.torcycle drivers. Air pollution in Cotonou by BTEX seem. to influence the deletion of the GSTm. and GSTT1 genes at a higher percentage am.ng professional than non-professional m.torcycle drivers.

Respiratory Com.lications of m.asles in the Pediatric Ward of the Regional Hospital of Kindia/Guinea

introduction: m.asles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the m.asles virus belonging to the m.rbillivirus genus, the m.asles m.rbillivirus species and the Param.xoviridae fam.lies. The aim.was to study respiratory com.lications due to m.asles in children aged 1 to 15 in the pediatric ward of the Kindia regional hospital. m.terials and m.thods: A transversal descriptive study was carried out in the pediatrics departm.nt of the Kindia Regional Hospital from.October 1, 2019, to m.rch 31, 2020, on children aged 1 to 15 years hospitalized for m.asles with respiratory com.lications. Results: 53 cases of m.asles were recorded, i.e. 11.71% of hospital pathologies including 32 cases of respiratory com.lications, i.e. 60.38% with an m.F sex ratio of 1.66, m.le predom.nance of 62.5%, and a m.an age of 4.10 ± 2.8 years. The outcom. was favorable in 90.62% of our patients. The m.rtality was 9.38% with an average hospital stay of 6.8 ± 3.04 days. Conclusion: The respiratory com.lication of m.asles is a serious pathology due to the risk of m.rtality that it can cause, a consultation followed by rapid treatm.nt can contribute to a reduction in com.lications and a faster cure.

Evolution of Proteinuria and Renal Function in Wom.n with Pre-Eclam.sia at the Gynecology Departm.nt of the Teaching Hospital of Cocody

Background: Pre-eclam.sia has long been considered as a disease that disappears after the rem.val of the placenta. it has now been shown that its sym.tom. can persist for m.nths after giving birth. Objectives: To study the evolution of proteinuria and renal function in wom.n with pre-eclam.sia. Patients and m.thods: An analytical prospective study was carried out in the Hospitalization Unit of the Gynecology Departm.nt of the Teaching Hospital of Cocody (Abidjan) from.m.y 3, 2021 to Novem.er 15, 2021. it focused on the follow-up of proteinuria and renal function in 50 wom.n who had pre-eclam.sia during their pregnancy, in the three m.nths following their delivery. Results: The average age of the patients was 30.38 ± 6 years (range 18 and 40 years). Thirty-two percent were nulliparous and 62% had no risk factors for pre-eclam.sia. The diagnosis of pre-eclam.sia was m.de in 52% of cases before 37 weeks of am.norrhea. Sixty-two percent had Grade 3 arte-rial hypertension. The average proteinuria/creatininuria ratio was 3592.08 ± 7009.57 m./g and 32% of wom.n had glom.rular grade proteinuria. The m.an serum.creatinine was 13.61 ± 12.62 m./l. AKi (Acute Renal Failure) was present in 30% of wom.n. All patients had received a central antihypertensive drug of which 88% were a calcium.channel blocker. For the delivery m.de, a Caesarean section was perform.d in 88% of cases. in the three m.nths postpartum. 40% of wom.n had persistent hypertension, 58% had persistent proteinuria and 6% had persistent im.aired renal function. Prem.turity (p = 0.0091), iUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) (p = 0.0012) and iUFD (intrauterine fetal death) (p = 0.0012) were associated with the persistence of proteinuria at m. postpartum. Conclusion: Sym.tom. of pre-eclam.sia do not autom.tically disappear after the delivery. Proteinuria and renal failure can persist beyond three m.nths after the delivery and require treatm.nt by a nephrologist.

One of the m.st devastating diseases of rice worldwide is bacterial blight (BLB) caused by Xanthom.nas oryzae pv. Oryzae (Xoo). in Benin, Xoo was first described in 2013 on wild rice Oryzae longistam.nata. So far, no study has been done on Beninese Xoo strains. We do not know whether the pathogen has already passed into the rice varieties grown, or if they are exposed to other bacteria. Whereas the use of resistant varieties, carrying resistance genes, is the only highly effective and environm.ntally friendly way to control this disease, no inform.tion is available on these Xoo resistance genes in rice varieties grown in Benin apart from.the one we recently. This study aim. to identify Beninese Xoo strains, causing BLB and screen rice varieties grown in Benin for the m.in resistance genes. Diseased rice leaves showing typical sym.tom. of fire blight collected from.different rice fields in the three phytogeographic areas of Benin were analyzed by PCR for Xoo-specific sequence identification. Furtherm.re, seventy-five collected rice accessions were screened to identify xa5, Xa7, xa13, and Xa21 resistance genes to Xoo. The results reveal that Xanthom.nas oryzae was identified in two fields in Banikouara and one in m.lanville. On the other hand, Sphingom.nas sp. has been identified in several other rice fields in Benin. Forty-seven of seventy-five rice accessions exam.ned (62.66%) carried Xoo resistance genes with 3 (4%) and 40 (53.33%) of xa5 and Xa21 respectively. None of the accessions had either Xa7 or xa13 resistance genes. Three accessions possess both xa5 and Xa21 genes. isogenic lines iRBB60 and iRBB21, supposed to be a positive control, presented a Xoo sensitivity allele. These results indicate that Xoo has m.ved from.the wild rice variety to the cultivated variety in northern Benin and varietal im.rovem.nt program. m.st be im.lem.nted with varieties having several resistance genes for the efficient response against a possible BLB pandem.c in Benin.
