Microbial degradation of various types of dissolved organic matter in aquatic ecosystems and its influencing factors

Interactions between chemodiverse dissolved organic matter(DOM)and biodiverse microbes are governed by a myriad of intrinsic and extrinsic factors which are not well ***,we update and bridge the gap of this interdisciplinary theme *** an ecosystem level,aquatic ecosystems dominated by algae-sourced DOM(e.g.,eutrophic lake or coastal upwelling areas)harbor more biolabile DOM,such as directly assimilable monomers and readily hydrolysable ***,other ecosystems prevailed by DOM supply from soil and vascular plants(e.g.,river or wetland)have more biorefractory DOM,such as low molecular weight(LMW)residue of aliphatic C skeletons and geopolymers.A variety of heterotrophic bacteria,archaea,fungi,phagotrophic protists,and even photoautotrophic phytoplankton shows genomic and/or culturing experimental evidence of being able to process a diverse type of *** various biodegradable organics have different chemical structures and chemical bonds such as carbohydrates,amino acids,proteins,lignins,lipids,carboxylic acids,humic acids,hydrocarbons,and ***,bio-production of metabolism intermediates and/or biorefractory organics(e.g.,carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules,CRAM)is observed despite general decay of bulk dissolved organic carbon(DOC)during bioassay *** particular,emerging evidence shows that archaea contribute significantly to biomass in the marine mesopelagic zone and subsurface environments and their abundance often increases with depth in ***,not only intrinsic factors(e.g.,DOM composition and structure),but also extrinsic ones(e.g.,sunlight and dissolved oxygen)play important roles in interplays between DOM and microbes.

The development of reliable catalysts with both excellent activity and recyclability for carbon dioxide(CO_(2))hydrogenation is ***,a ternary hybrid heterogeneous catalyst,involving mononuclear Ru complex,N,P-containing porous organic polymers(POPs),and mesoporous hollow carbon spheres(Ru^(3+)-POPs@MHCS)is reported for CO_(2)hydrogenation to *** on comprehensive structural analyses,we demonstrated that Ru^(3+)-POPs were successfully immobilized within *** optimized Ru^(3+)-0.5POPs@MHCS catalyst,which was obtained with about 5 wt.%Ru^(3+)and 0.5 mmol POPs polymers confined into 0.3 g MHCS,exhibited high catalytic activity for CO_(2)hydrogenation to formate(turnover number(TON)>1,200 for 24 h under mild reaction conditions(4.0 MPa,120℃))and improved durability,compared to Ru^(3+)catalysts without POPs polymers(Ru^(3+)-MHCS)and unencapsulated MHCS(Ru^(3+)-0.5POPs)*** improved catalytic performance is attributed to the high surface area and large pore volume of MHCS which favors dispersion and stabilization of Ru^(3+)-***,the MHCS and POPs showed high CO_(2)adsorption ***^(3+)-POPs encapsulated into MHCS reduces the activation energy barrier for CO_(2)hydrogenation to formate.

Crystal structure prediction based on first-principles calculations is often achieved by applying relaxation to randomly generated initial *** a structure requires multiple optimization *** is time consuming to fully relax all the initial structures,but it is difficult to figure out which initial structure leads to the optimal solution in *** this paper,we propose a optimization method for crystal structure prediction,called Look Ahead based on Quadratic Approximation,that optimally assigns optimization steps to each candidate *** allows us to identify the most stable structure with a minimum number of total local optimization *** simulations using known systems Si,NaCl,Y_(2)Co_(17),Al_(2)O_(3),and GaAs showed that the computational cost can be reduced significantly compared to random *** method can be applied for controlling all kinds of local optimizations based on first-principles calculations to obtain best results under restricted computational resources.

A hydrophobic peptide fraction that enhances the water dispersibility of curcumin

The present study describes the complexation between curcumin(Cur) and a peptide mixture(Pep). Pep was prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of casein and used as an excipient for poorly water-soluble Cur. An aqueous solution of Pep and an acetone solution of Cur were mixed and lyophilized to obtain a white-yellow powder of the peptide and Cur complex(CurPep). The water dispersibility of Cur was enhanced by the complexation with Pep. Pep was fractionated using ammonium sulfate precipitation and ultrafiltration to identify which peptides preferentially interact with Cur. Relatively hydrophobic peptides with high molecular weights(>5 k Da) were more effective in enhancing the water dispersibility of Cur than other fractions. Cur-Pep dispersed under acidic and neutral conditions, at which amphoteric Pep is positively or negatively charged. Cur-Pep exists as a hydrocolloid with particle size 160–330 nm in aqueous media.

Gastric cancer arising from the remnant stomach after distal gastrectomy:A review

Gastric stump carcinoma was initially reported by Balfore in 1922,and many reports of this disease have since been published. We herein review previous reports of gastric stump carcinoma with respect to epidemiology,carcinogenesis,Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection,Epstein-Barr virus infection,clinicopathologic characteristics and endoscopic treatment. In particular,it is noteworthy that no prognostic differences are observed between gastric stump carcinoma and primary upper third gastric cancer. In addition,endoscopic submucosal dissection has recently been used to treat gastric stump carcinoma in the early stage. In contrast,many issues concerning gastric stump carcinoma remain to be clarified,including molecular biological characteristics and the carcinogenesis of *** *** herein review the previous pertinent literature and summarize the characteristics of gastric stump carcinoma reported to date.

Lamellar crystal thickness lc of isotactic polybutene-1(it-PB1)have been investigated for crystal-lization in the melt over a wide range of crystallization temperature T from 40°C to 90°C by small angle X-ray scattering experiments and density *** crystal thickness lc demonstrates two linear dependences on inverse supercooling and a transition from one dependence to the other has been observed around T=65°*** of the two dependences obeys the nucleation theory in the high and low supercooling ranges,*** folding free energy q determined from the low supercooling range is larger than that determined from the high supercooling *** mechanisms for the transition are discussed taking account of entropy of chain folding directions.

Evaluation of the Fatigue Characteristics of Laser-processed Hot Work Tool Steel Based on Reliability

It is reported that laser-processing is effective to repair the heat checks, which are fine shallow cracks on a surfaceof die-casting dies. In this study, the rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out to evaluate the fatiguecharacteristics of laser-processed hot working tool steel. Because test results are scattered, S-N curves are decidedbased on the evaluation of fatigue strength distribution. As a result, the fatigue strength of the laser-processedspecimens decreases remarkably in comparison with that of base metal. However, it can be recovered to almostinitial value by heat treatment at secondary hardening temperature. This procedure is also effective to decrease thescatter of fatigue strength. The laser-processing can be carried out at low cost and this method is effective for theextension of the work life of dies.

Newly emerging standard chemotherapies for gastric cancer and clinical potential in elderly patients

With the increase in average life expectancy,the rate of occurrence of gastric cancer in elderly patients is also *** many clinical trials have been conducted to examine the effect of chemotherapy treatment on gastric cancer,age limits for eligible subjects have prevented the establishment of standards for chemotherapy in elderly patients with gastric *** of March 2009,evidence-based standard chemotherapy regimens were *** the Western world,debates centered on the ECF(Epirubicin/cisplatin/5FU) or DCF(Docetaxel/cisplatin/5-FU) regimens based on the phase □ randomized controlled trial at the Royal Marsden Hospital(RMH) or the V325 study,*** JCOG9912 and SPIRITS trials emerged from Japan indicating attractive regimens that include S-1 for advanced gastric cancer *** these active anticancer drugs,the trials that studied the eff icacy of adjuvant therapies or surgical approaches,such as the Int-116/MAGIC/ACTS-GC trials,have actually succeeded in demonstrating the benefits of adjuvant therapies in gastric cancer *** cases of gastric cancer in elderly patients,treatment policies should consider these studies while analyzing not only the therapeutic effects but also drug toxicity,individual general health conditions,and social factors to select treatments that emphasize quality of life.
