The essential elements of.the rape crime are sexual penetration, f.rce, and the lack of.consent. The prevalence of.rape worldwide has been reported to be a staggering 20%. In Nigeria, most victims of.rape will elect to remain silent about the experience, because of.stigmatization leading to under reporting of.the crime. This study was aimed at elucidating the perception of.rape and determining its prevalence and predictors among f.male undergraduates in a tertiary institution in South Eastern Nigeria. This was a descriptive cross sectional study in which self.administered questionnaires were used to collect relevant data f.om 280 f.male undergraduates of.UNIZIK Okof.a Nnewi Campus, Nigeria, selected by cluster sampling technique. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package f.r Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine associations and identif. independent predictors of.rape respectively. The level of.signif.cance was set at p f.male students had a good knowledge and the perception of.rape and that some had f.llen victims (16.4%). Acquaintance rape was markedly common (p f. campus (p f.male students, of.en the party going (p f.cantly more likely to become victims of.rape than those married, on campus and non-party-going counterparts. Also, students who attended single gender schools (p rape than those counterparts who attended co-educational colleges. Awareness campaigns through peer education, introduction of.sexuality education in the school curriculum and establishment of.school health programmes are highly recommended.

Tuberculosis remains one of.the major health problems in many tropical countries. An estimated eight to ten million people develop overt tuberculosis annually worldwide as a result of.primary inf.ction, endogenous reactivation or exogenous re-inf.ction. About half.of.all patients with TB do not complete treatment and this contributes to prolonged inf.ctiousness, drug resistance, relapse and death. This study is aimed at assessing the adherence of.TB patients to anti-TB medications as well as the f.ctors inf.uencing drug adherence in a tertiary health care institution in South-Eastern Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 217 TB patients in Nnamdi Azi-kiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. Inf.rmation was obtained using a self.administered and interviewer administered semi-structured questionnaire. The mean age of.the respondents is 36.1 ± 13.3 years. More of.the respondents were f.males (58.1%), while 41.9% were males. It was observed that 74.2% had never f.iled to take their anti-TB drugs while 24.2% agreed they had f.iled to take their drugs. The major reasons f.r f.ilure to take drugs were no money f.r transport to collect new drugs and f.rgetf.lness by 32.7% of.the respondents respectively. The f.ctors which inf.uenced drug adherence were educational qualif.cation, average monthly income, ill-health as a f.nancial burden and receiving HIV drugs

Objective:To assess healthcare workers' involvement in healthcare waste management in public and private ***:Validated questionnaires(n = 660) were administered to randomly selected healthcare workers f.om selected private hospitals between April and July ***:Among the healthcare workers that participated in the study,187(28.33%) were medical doctors,44(6.67%) were pharmacists,77(11.67%) were medical laboratory scientist,35(5.30%) were waste handlers and 317(48.03%) were ***,the number of.workers that have heard about healthcare waste disposal system was above average 424(69.5%).More health-workers in the government(81.5%) than in private(57.3%) hospitals were aware of.healthcare waste disposal system and more in government hospitals attended training on *** level of.waste generated by the two hospitals dif.ered signif.cantly(P=0.0086) with the generation level higher in government than private *** materials f.r healthcare waste disposal were signif.cantly more available(P=0.001) in government than private *** was no signif.cant dif.erence(P = 0.285) in syringes and needles disposal practices in the two hospitals and they were exposed to equal risks(P =0.8510).f.f.y-six(18.5%) and 140(45.5%) of.the study participants in private and government hospitals respectively were aware of.the existence of.healthcare waste management committee with 134(44.4%) and 19(6.2%) workers conf.rming that it did not exist in their *** existence of.the committee was very low in the private ***:The availability of.material f.r waste segregation at point of.generation,compliance of.healthcare workers to healthcare waste management guidelines and the existence of.inf.ction control committee in both hospitals is generally low and unsatisf.ctory.

Introduction: The problems of.adolescents’ sexual behavior are grave and f.r-reaching. Methods: Review of.exiting literature via Google scholar, AJOL, Pubmed, HINARI and other relevant data bases on the common problems of.adolescents’ inappropriate sexual behavior. Result: Adolescent sexual behavior could result in adolescent pregnancy which prevalence varies widely throughout Nigeria perhaps due to dif.erences in culture and development. Abortion, the willf.l termination of.pregnancy is another problem which is of.en undertaken f.r pregnancies resulting f.om incest and sexual abuse. Also common is trans-generational sex which occurs when an adolescent has non-marital sex in the last 12 months with a man who is at least 10 years older than her. Also related to this, is transactional sex f.und in both committed and casual relationships. It is not always done f.r survival because in some cultures, sex f.r f.vor is carried out f.r reasons other than subsistence. f.rthermore, multiple sexual partners are the engagement in sex with more than one partner over a particular time f.ame. It may be sequential or concurrent. The high prevalence of.these problems in Nigeria raises a question of.the possibility of.achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs) 4, 5 and 6 specif.cally targeted at reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases respectively. Conclusion: Policies and strategies such as f.mily lif. and HIV/AIDs education (f.HE) curriculum on adolescent reproductive health should be pursued with greater vigor in our secondary schools in addition to establishing HIV counseling centers and vocational training programs f.r out-of.school adolescents. WHO support and commitment to key action areas f.r countries and member states will build and strengthen their capacity to improve reproductive and sexual health.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is one of.the commonest cancers of.the f.male genital tract and accounts f.r about a hundred and ninety thousand deaths each year, most of.which occur in developing countries. Early cervical screening methods have contributed to the f.ll of.cervical cancer deaths in the developed world. This is dif.erent in developing countries where people have limited knowledge about this disease condition and the screening methods f.r prevention. This study determined the knowledge and practice of.cervical cancer screening among f.male secondary school teachers in Nnewi North Local Government Area of.Anambra State. Method: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study in which self.administered questionnaires were returned by 142 respondents and results were analyzed using Statistical Package f.r Social Sciences version 17. Results: The mean age of.the respondents was 35.6 ± 1.76 years. A high proportion of.the respondents were aware of.cervical cancer 106 (74.6%). About 44 (41.5%) knew of.cervical cancer screening by Pap smear, out of.which only 20.5% had done a pap smear. The most common reasons given f.r not doing the test were;not deeming the test necessary, not knowing where the test could be done and f.eling of.not being at risk of.developing cervical cancer. Conclusion/Recommendation: Though the level of.awareness of.cervical cancer screening was high, the level of.uptake of.Pap smear was still very low. A national cervical cancer Pap smear campaign should be intensif.ed to change the negative perception towards Pap smear test.

Background: The sexual health indices of.the adolescents are very poor. This study ascertained the f.ctors inf.uencing the sexual behaviour among f.male adolescents in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria. Method: This was a cross sectional design in which a total of.800 f.male adolescents were selected f.om secondary schools in the area using multistage sampling method;and also selected f.om a major market (f.r those who were not at school) in the same geographical area using cluster sampling technique. Data were collected f.om the respondents about socio-demographic prof.le, reproductive and sexual health knowledge, attitude, behavior, sources of.sexual health inf.rmation. Result: The highest proportion of.students who had ever had sex was f.und among the 16 - 17 years age group while the modal age group was 18 - 19 years f.r non students. Also “not living with both parents” and poor f.mily background, were markedly associated with increased likelihood to engage in sexual activity. Poverty level was particularly high among the non-student adolescents. f.rthermore, wrong knowledge of.f.rtile period, low risk perception of.HIV and premarital, and use of.condoms among the respondents were all signif.cantly associated with increased chance to engage in sex. The student adolescents got sexuality inf.rmation mainly f.om the teachers;as opposed to their non-student counterparts who had youth organization and f.iends as main sources. Conclusion: f.mily values, poverty alleviation, change of.attitude through appropriate health and sexuality education especially targeting the non-student adolescents are highly recommended. Sexual negotiation skill, accessible f.rmal education f.r all should be encouraged to create the right sexual behavior among the adolescent girls.

Background: Abuse of.medicines is becoming a serious problem in many parts of.the world, with negative consequences ranging f.om addiction, psychosis, cardiovascular complications, and premature deaths f.om unintentional overdose. Objectives: The objective of.this study is to assess awareness, knowledge, perception and attitudes toward the abuse of.prescription medicines (PM) among medicines prescribers and dispensers in Nigeria. Design and Participants: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among pharmacists, other pharmacy staf. in retail pharmacies, licensed patent medicines vendors (chemical sellers), and medical doctors in Nnewi, Nigeria. Data were collected through self.completed questionnaire supervised by trained research assistants, between December 2013 and April 2014. Three hundred and seventy-f.ve participants were recruited f.r this study. Data Analysis: The Statistical Package f.r the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 f.r windows was used f.r data analysis. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to evaluate dif.erences and associations based on selected variables. Results: The perception was high 294 (78.4%) among respondents that PM abuse was a problem in the community. Knowledge of.health problems associated with PM abuse was also high at 226 (60.3%). However the attitude of.the respondents towards early detection of.PM abuse among their patients/clients was discouraging. Education, educational status, work status and gender signif.cantly predict good knowledge and positive attitude about PM abuse. Conclusion: f.ndings f.om this study will assist health authorities to f.rmulate appropriate health promotion interventions to control and prevent abuse of.prescription medicines. Actions directed at early intervention, capacity building, education, public health initiatives and law enf.rcements will hopef.lly curb the menace of.PM abuse in Nnewi, Nigeria.

The albumin and lipid prof.le changes f.llowing treadmill exercise were assessed among 160 apparently healthy student volunteers made up of.80 males and 80 f.males within the age bracket of.18 - 30 years, the physically active age group within the universities. The anthropometric indices (weight, height and BMI) of.the subjects were taken using ref.rence/standard methods. The blood pressures and pulse rate, then albumin and lipid prof.les were also taken bef.re and af.er exercise. The participants ran on a treadmill and their physical conditions were assessed using the Bruce protocol. Immediate post-exercise blood samples were again analyzed in the laboratory. There were signif.cant increases (P 0.5). There were gender variations in response to the treadmill exercise. Some of.these f.ndings indicate the expected f.nctional alterations in the lif. of.the students and there is a need to recommend the adoption of.regular moderate exercise pattern to the students. These can bring about positive changes in their serum lipid and albumin prof.les f.r better health in the f.ce of.stressf.l academic lif..
