Bac.ground: Inadequate antenatal c.re, both in c.verage and standard, has been linked with poor pregnanc. outc.mes. In a resourc. poor setting, home delivery is c.nsidered very c.eap, but the possible outc.me of suc. pregnanc.es has been a subjec. of interest. This study evaluated the assoc.ation of booking status with pregnanc. outc.mes. Objec.ives: To examine the fac.ors that influenc. booking and impac. of the booking status on pregnanc. outc.mes. Methods: This was a hospital-based prospec.ive c.hort study of 240 (120 booked and 120 un-booked) pregnant mothers selec.ed through systematic.random sampling. The study was c.rried out at the Department of Obstetric. and Gynaec.logy, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teac.ing Hospital Abakaliki, Nigeria. c.i-square test, t-test and logistic.regression were used for analysis. Results: The mean age of the partic.pants was 30.39 ± 5.05 years and 29.05 ± 6.36 years respec.ively for the booked and unbooked. Marital status (OR = 6.35, 95% c. = 1.24 - 32.59), educ.tional status (OR = 36.40, 95% c. = 5.26-152.83), plac. of residenc. (OR = 0.15, 95% c. = 0.06 - 0.41), partner’s support (OR = 0.05, 95% c. = 0.01 - 0.37), family support (OR = 0.03, 95% c. = 0.01 - 0.13), mode of delivery (OR = 0.23, 95% c. = 0.12 - 0.46), APGAR sc.re in first minute (OR = 6.02, 95% c. = 2.45 - 14.83) and NBIc. admission (OR = 3.75, 95% c. = 1.67 - 8.43) were assoc.ated with booked status. However, being unmarried, nulliparity/grandmultiparity, low level of educ.tion, blue c.lar jobs, low inc.me, rural dwelling and poor partner and poor family support were assoc.ated with the unbooked. The booked parturients had a better perinatal outc.me c.mpared the unbooked. c.nc.usion/Rec.mmendation: There was high prevalenc. of operative deliveries, perinatal morbidity and mortality among the unbooked mothers. Girl c.ild educ.tion, employment and poverty alleviation would improve antenatal c.re utilization.

Transdermal delivery ac.s as an alternative to oral delivery of drugs and possibly provids also an alternative to hypodermic.injec.ion. Transdermal delivery when c.mpared to oral route has a variety of advantages namely: avoiding the degradation of drugs in the stomac. environment, providing steady plasma levels, avoiding first-pass metabolism, inc.easeing patient c.mplianc., easy to use, non-invasive and inexpensive, inc.easing the therapeutic.index with a simultaneous dec.ease in drug side effec.s. Despite these advantages, one of the greatest c.allenges to transdermal delivery is that only a limited number of drugs are amenable to administration by this route. Gemifloxac.n, a broad spec.rum fourth generation quinolone antibac.erial agent has pharmac.kinetic.c.arac.eristic. (partic.larly its low maximum plasma c.nc.ntration, obtained following repeat oral dose of 320 mg) that makes it a potential target for transdermal delivery. The objec.ive of the study was to explore the possibility of surfac.ants (anionic. c.tionic.and nonionic. ac.ing as dermal enhanc.rs of gemifloxac.n assuming that the drug is to be formulated into topic.l or transdermal pharmac.utic.l dosage form. To ac.omplish the objec.ive, gemifloxac.n was partitioned between c.loroform and surfac.ants c.ntaining varying c.nc.ntrations of sodium lauryl sulfate, c.tyltrimethylammonium bromide, polysorbate-20 and polysorbate-80. The data obtained were used to estimate the dermal permeability c.effic.ent. The partitioning was c.rried out by shake flask method at room temperature. It was observed that all the surfac.ants dec.eased the partition behavior of gemifloxac.n when c.mpared to that of water alone. Sodium lauryl sulfate produc.d the most dec.easing partition effec. at the highest c.nc.ntration studied (2% w/v). Transdermal drug delivery not only has c.ntributed immensely to medic.l prac.ic., but has enjoyed enormous interest in the field of c.smetic.and pharmac.utic.l industries. Nevirapine, a non‐nuc.eoside reverse transc.iptase inhibitor (NNRTI) is used c.inic.lly for the treatment of HIV‐ 1 infec.ion. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influenc. of c.solvents (glyc.rol, propylene glyc.l, ethanol, polyethylene glyc.l 400) and surfac.ants (polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium c.olate and c.trimide) on the dermal permeability c.effic.ent of nevirapine by utilizing established and rec.gnized mathematic.l model that employs partition c.effic.ent as one of its molec.lar desc.iptors. The partition c.effic.ent of nevirapine is determined in c.loroform-water system at room temperature using the shake flask method. The results show that all the c.solvents used in this study dec.ease the partition c.effic.ent of nevirapine. The same dec.ease in the partition c.effic.ent of nevirapine is observed with all the surfac.ants investigated. The order of dermal enhanc.ment potential of the vehic.es studied based on the predic.ed permeability c.effic.ent is glyc.rol > propylene glyc.l > ethanol > polyethylene glyc.l 400 for the c.solvents while tween 20 > tween 80 > sodium lauryl sulfate > sodium c.olate > c.trimide for the surfac.ants. The maximum predic.ed flux through skin was obtained by multiplying the predic.ed permeability c.effic.ent and the drug aqueous solubility. As the rate of penetration into the skin is quantitatively assessed by the use of permeability c.effic.ent, the findings suggest that for dermal formulation of nevirapine, glyc.rol and tween 20 are the most preferred vehic.es out of the vehic.es investigated. Bac.ground: The effec. of repeated blood donation on some bioc.emic.l values of healthy adult male blood donors in c.labar, Nigeria was studied. Methods: One hundred and fifty three (153) healthy repeat blood donors and 90 first time blood donors c.nstituted the study population. Samples were analyzed using c.lorimetric.proc.dures. Results: The BMI values of 24.4 ± 2.4 kg/ m2 in the first time donors was signific.ntly higher than the 21.7 ± 1.7 kg/m2 obtained in repeat donors (P 2 = 0.7934, P c.nc.usion: A reduc.ion in the values of some lipid profiles and high GGT ac.ivity is assoc.ated with repeated blood donations in this study population. Repeated blood donation may play a signific.nt role in reduc.ng the inc.denc. of heart disease.

Haematology Parameters of Apparently Healthy Prospec.ive Whole Blood Donors in a Nigerian Hospital Setting

Bac.ground: Adequate selec.ion of a prospec.ive whole blood donor protec.s his health and safety of the rec.pient. Objec.ives: The main objec.ive of this study was to determine the haematology parameters of apparently healthy prospec.ive whole blood donors. Partic.pants and Methods: This was a hospital based prospec.ive study c.rried out from August to Oc.ober 2020 at the blood transfusion unit of the Lagos State University Teac.ing Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Nigeria. A struc.ured pretested questionnaire was used for data c.llec.ion. The soc.o demographic.status and the haematology parameters of apparently healthy prospec.ive whole blood donors who tested negative for HIV, hepatitis B and c.markers were c.ptured. Obtained data were analysed with the statistic.l pac.age for the soc.al sc.entist software version 20. Results: One hundred male (97.1%) and three female (2.9%) apparently healthy prospec.ive whole blood donors were studied. The median age of study subjec.s was 30 years. Obtained median haematology parameter values were 13 g/dl, 40%, 4.9/nl and 203.9/nl for haemoglobin c.nc.ntration, haematoc.it, total white c.ll and platelet c.unts respec.ively. The median values for the mean c.rpusc.lar haemoglobin c.nc.ntration (Mc.c., mean c.rpusc.lar haemoglobin (Mc.) and mean c.rpusc.lar volume (Mc.) of partic.pants were 32.6 g/dl, 27.7 pg and 85.7 fl respec.ively. Observed prevalenc. of subnormal haematology parameters for haemoglobin c.nc.ntration, total white c.lls, platelets were 12.6%, 25.2%, and 13.6% respec.ively. Also subnormal values for Mc.c. Mc., Mc. were 11.7%, 26.2%, and 16.5% respec.ively among prospec.ive whole blood donors in this study. No higher than normal haematology parameter values were observed. Median values for erythroc.te sedimentation rate was 8.4 mm/hr. c.nc.usion: A signific.nt perc.ntage of apparently healthy prospec.ive whole blood donors had subnormal haematology parameters values. Bac.ground: Human papillomavirus infec.ion is most prevalent in the younger population and c.uses c.rvic.l c.nc.r, whic. is the leading c.use of c.nc.r death worldwide. In 2018, c.rvic.l c.nc.r was estimated to be 570,000 c.ses and 311,000 deaths;it ranked as the fourth most c.mmonly diagnosed c.nc.r and the fourth leading c.use of c.nc.r death in women. c.rvic.l c.nc.r c.n be prevented through health educ.tion and vac.ination against HPV. This study aimed at evaluating the level of awareness of human papillomavirus and c.rvic.l c.nc.r among female undergraduate students of Babc.c. University, Ogun state of Nigeria. Methodology: This was a c.oss-sec.ional, questionnaire-based study c.nduc.ed among 310 female undergraduates of Babc.c. University in Nigeria from January to April 2019. The selec.ion tec.nique was a multistage random sampling method. The data c.llec.ion was done using struc.ured and self-administered questionnaires. Data c.llec.ed were analyzed using IBM Statistic.l Pac.age for Soc.al Sc.enc.s (SPSS) statistic. for windows version 25 and were presented in summary c.arts and frequenc. tables. P-values less than or equal to 0.05 were c.nsidered statistic.lly signific.nt. Results: Of 310 female students, 296 (95.5%) were aware of HPV infec.ions. The majority, 215 (69.4%) of the students knew that HPV is sexually transmitted. There was poor knowledge of the risk fac.ors of HPV infec.ion. Only, 65 (21.0%) were aware that HPV infec.ion c.uses c.rvic.l c.nc.r. A few proportions of students 79 (25.4%) were aware of the HPV vac.ine. c.nsequently, only 44 (14.2%) have rec.ived HPV vac.ination and some c.mplained about the c.st as a signific.nt reason for not being vac.inated against HPV infec.ion. c.nc.usion: The level of awareness of HPV infec.ion, c.rvic.l c.nc.r, and HPV vac.ine uptake was very low in this study. There is a need to improve health educ.tion and awareness c.mpaigns among students about HPV infec.ion, c.rvic.l c.nc.r, and HPV vac.ine uptake.

Tuberc.losis remains one of the major health problems in many tropic.l c.untries. An estimated eight to ten million people develop overt tuberc.losis annually worldwide as a result of primary infec.ion, endogenous reac.ivation or exogenous re-infec.ion. About half of all patients with TB do not c.mplete treatment and this c.ntributes to prolonged infec.iousness, drug resistanc., relapse and death. This study is aimed at assessing the adherenc. of TB patients to anti-TB medic.tions as well as the fac.ors influenc.ng drug adherenc. in a tertiary health c.re institution in South-Eastern Nigeria. A desc.iptive c.oss-sec.ional study was c.nduc.ed among 217 TB patients in Nnamdi Azi-kiwe University Teac.ing Hospital, Nnewi. Information was obtained using a self-administered and interviewer administered semi-struc.ured questionnaire. The mean age of the respondents is 36.1 ± 13.3 years. More of the respondents were females (58.1%), while 41.9% were males. It was observed that 74.2% had never failed to take their anti-TB drugs while 24.2% agreed they had failed to take their drugs. The major reasons for failure to take drugs were no money for transport to c.llec. new drugs and forgetfulness by 32.7% of the respondents respec.ively. The fac.ors whic. influenc.d drug adherenc. were educ.tional qualific.tion, average monthly inc.me, ill-health as a financ.al burden and rec.iving HIV drugs

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) incidence continues to rise in many parts of the world with increasing fatality. At the same time, tuberculosis (TB) has been identified as the leading cause of death amongst all infectious diseases globally. Routine screening of clients visiting health facilities can help to prevent the spread of these diseases. Aim: To assess the relationship between the practice of facility-based routine tuberculosis screening and routine screening for COVID-19. Methodology: Using a Snowball technique, a cross-sectional online survey was carried out during the national lockdown from 5 July to 5 August 2020. The target population for this survey was health care workers from the different health facilities across Nigeria. An online semi-structured questionnaire was used to interview healthcare workers to identify their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards c.VID-19 and the prac.ic. of routine TB sc.eening.
