Impact of hospital type on risk-adjusted,traffic-related 30-day mortality:a population-based registry study

Background:Traffic incidents are still a major contributor to hospital admissions and trauma-related *** aim of this nationwide study was to examine risk-adjusted traffic injury mortality to determine whether hospital type was an independent survival ***:Data on all patients admitted to Swedish hospitals with traffic-related injuries,based on International Classification of Diseases codes,between 2001 and 2011 were extracted from the Swedish inpatient and cause of death *** the binary outcome measure of death or survival,data were analysed using logistic regression,adjusting for age,sex,comorbidity,severity of injury and hospital *** severity of injury was established using the International Classification of Diseases Injury Severity Score(ICISS).Results:The final study population consisted of 152,693 hospital *** individuals(0–25 years of age)were overrepresented,accounting for 41%of traffic-related *** were overrepresented in all age *** at university hospitals had the lowest mean(SD)ICISS 0.68(0.19).Regional and county hospitals had mean ICISS 0.75(0.15)and 0.77(0.15),respectively,for fatal traffic *** crude overall mortality in the study population was 1193,with a mean ICISS 0.72(0.17).Fatalities at university hospitals had the lowest mean ICISS 0.68(0.19).Regional and county hospitals had mean ICISS 0.75(0.15)and 0.77(0.15),respectively,for fatal traffic *** regional and county hospitals were merged into one group and its risk-adjusted mortality compared with university hospitals,no significant difference was found.A comparison between hospital groups with the most severely injured patients(ICISS0.85)also did not show a significant difference(odds ratio,1.13;95%confidence interval,0.97–1.32).Conclusions:This study shows that,in Sweden,the type of hospital does not influence risk adjusted traffic related mortality,where the most severely injured patients are tran

Factors affecting visual outcome of myopic choroidal neovascularization treated with verteporfin photodynamic therapy

AIM: To evaluate the visual outcomes of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to pathological myopia and the impact of novel risk factors affecting the final visual outcome. ·METHODS: Interventional case series of 18 consecutive patients with pathological myopia treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Inclusion criteria were spherical equivalent -6D or worse or features of pathological myopia on retinal examination. The main outcome measure was final best -corrected visual acuity (BCVA). ·RESULTS: Of 18 eyes, 13 (72.2%) avoided moderate visual loss (≥3 lines of LogMAR BCVA) and 5 eyes (27.8%) improved by at least 1 line after 1 year. Patients with LogMAR BCVA ≤0.3 (Snellen equivalent 20/40) at one year were younger than those with BCVA >0.3 (mean age 39.0 vs 61.6 years, P =0.001). A higher proportion of eyes with greatest linear dimension (GLD) of ≤1 000μm avoided moderate visual loss (100% vs 50%, P =0.026). Among patients who were treated within 2 weeks of visual symptoms, 88.9% avoided the loss of 3 or more lines compared to 55.6% for those who presented later. The mean improvement in LogMAR BCVA of those with GLD ≤1 000μm was +0.12 compared to a loss of 0.55 LogMAR units for those with GLD >1 000μm (P =0.02). Visual outcomes were not associated with gender or refractive error.·CONCLUSION: Good visual outcome in myopic CNV is associated with younger age, smaller lesion size and earlier initiation of treatment. These factors are relevant for ophthalmologists considering treatment options for myopic CNV.

Prevalence and genetic divergence of Leptospira interrogans and Leptospira borgpetersenii in house rats(Rattus rattus) from Peninsular Malaysia

The effect of sonication pretreatment condition on Eucheuma cottonii and Gelidium amansii seaweed towards agar extraction wae *** parameters were changed during sonication to investigate the effects on agar yield and *** parameters include the time interval,concentration ratio,frequency,and *** highest amount of agar extracted from Eucheuma cottonii species could be obtained from the time interval of 30min,seaweed weight to solvent volume ratio of 1:20,the frequency of 35Hz,and the sonication power intensity of 30%.For Gelidium amansii species,the best agar yield also could be obtained from the time interval of 30 min,1:20 of seaweed weight to water volume ratio,the frequency of 35Hz,and power intensity of 30%.From the experiment,sonication pretreatment signifi cantly influenced the yield and properties of extracted *** sonication with autoclaved seaweed produced agar containing less sulfate content,which is an excellent chemical property for gel electrophoresis *** gelstrength of sonication with autoclaving for both seaweeds,Eucheuma and Gelidium species was the highest among those by sonication with direct heating,which proved that sonication pretreatment with autoclaving could enhance the physical properties of the agar.

Evaluation of the Literacy and Numeracy Screening Program in Three Types of National Primary Schools in Malaysia

Literacy and numeracy screening(LINUS)is a program implemented by the Malaysia Ministry of Education in primary schools nationwide to increase literacy skills of students in year 1–*** study aimed at assessing the LINUS program implemented since *** of Critical Literacy by Freebody and Luke(1990)was applied in this *** and writing tests for Malay language subject were developed from the module of LINUS program and conducted on 120 students from three different types of schools,namely national schools,national-type Chinese schools,and national-type Tamil *** results showed that the level of reading and writing of students was ***-way analysis of variance tests showed significant differences between ethnic and type of schools with the reading and writing proficiency of the students;students of national schools scored the highest in reading test whereas the students of national-type Chinese school performed the best in writing *** contrast,family socioeconomic status of the students did not influence their reading and writing ***,teachers should take into account ethnic and type of schools in implementing the LINUS program as the main factors determining the level of literacy,achievement,and success of the LINUS program.

Asymmetric pinacol coupling of aromatic aldehydes with TiCl4-Zn in the presence of enantiopure squaric acid amidoalcohols afforded 1, 2-diols in excellent yields with high dl- diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities in the range of 46-89% ee. Some factors influencing dl-diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity were discussed.

Oxidative degradation of sunflower oil blended with roasted sesame oil during heating at frying temperature

The efficacy of roasted sesame oil(SO)on the oxidation deterioration of sunflower oil(SFO)during heating was *** concentrations of SO in the SFO were 0,10%,20%,and 30%by *** oxidation profile of oil samples was monitored by evaluating the generation of oxidation products and chemical alterations in the oils'composition during heating at frying temperature(180℃).The results showed that the oxidation parameters(free fatty acid,peroxide value,p-anisidine value,total oxidation status,thiobarbituric acid value,and color index)increased significantly in SFO compared to blends or SO during thermal *** heating,the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA)was reduced with increased level of saturated fatty acids;these results were observed more in SFO than those of SO or blend ***,the presence of SO in SFO reduced the decomposition of *** Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,the peak intensities were significantly altered in SFO compared to the blend oils during *** on the most analytical data,it may be agreed that the heating at frying temperature led to the generation of relatively higher contents of oxidative products in SFO compared to blend oils,showing a lower degree of oxidation occurred in *** best frying performance for the SFO was achieved by using 30%SO extracted from the roasted sesame *** study showed the proper blending of high polyunsaturated oil with SO can produce oil blends with high nutritional values and enhanced stability for daily cooking and deep-frying applications.

Various prctreatments methods including sonication and grinding were perfonned on red seaweed Gelidium amansii for the subsequent extraction ofagarose. The agarose products are usually extracted from agar powder products from seaweeds. In this study, the agarose was extracted using a direct polyethylene glycol （PEG） method without the need to first process the agar from seaweed. The agar extract was frozen then thawed and mixed directly with PEG solution to precipitate the agarose. The quality of agarose obtained was evaluated through physico-chemical properties analysis which includes spectral technique （FTIR）, melting and boiling point, gel strength and sulfate content. These properties were compared with a non-pretreated sample and it was found that the addition of pretreatment steps improved the quality of agarosc but gave a slightly lower yield. The gel strength of pretreated samples was much higher and the sulfate content was lower compared to non-pretreated samples. The best pretreatment method was sonication which gave gel strength of 742 gcm - and sulfate content of 0.63%. The extraction of agarose can be further improved with the use of different neutralizing agents. Pretreating the seaweed shows potential in improving the quality of agarosc from seaweed and can be applied for thture extraction of the agarose.
