Coprecipitation mechanisms of Zn by birnessite formation and its mineralogy under neutral pH conditions

Birnessite(δ-Mn(IV)O_(2))is a great manganese(Mn)adsorbent for dissolved divalent *** this study,we investigated the coprecipitation mechanism of δ-MnO_(2) in the presence of Zn(II)and an oxidizing agent(sodium hypochlorite)under two neutral pH values(6.0 and 7.5).Themineralogical characteristics and Zn–Mn mixed products were compared with simple surface complexation by adsorption modeling and structural *** coprecipitation experiments at different Zn/Mn molar ratios showed a Langmuir-type isotherm at pH 6.0,which was similar to the result of adsorption experiments at pH 6.0 and 7.5.X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed triple-corner-sharing innersphere complexation on the vacant sites was the dominant Zn sorption mechanism on δ-MnO_(2) under these experimental conditions.A coprecipitation experiment at pH 6.0 produced some hetaerolite(ZnMn(Ⅲ)_(2)O_(4))and manganite(γ-Mn(Ⅲ)OOH),but only at low Zn/Mn molar ratios(<1).These secondary precipitates disappeared because of crystal dissolution at higher Zn/Mn molar ratios because they were thermodynamically ***(ZnMn(IV)_(3)O_(7)•2H_(2)O)was produced in the coprecipitation experiment at pH 7.5 with a high Zn/Mn molar ratio of *** resulted in a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET)-type sorption isotherm,in which formation was explained by transformation of the crystalline structure ofδ-MnO_(2) to a tunnel *** experiments demonstrate that abiotic coprecipitation reactions can induce Zn–Mn compound formation on theδ-MnO_(2) surface,and that the pH is an important controlling factor for the crystalline structures and thermodynamic stabilities.

Direct measurement of the three-dimensional distribution of leaf area density and light conditions in a mature oak stand by the cube method

Although the distributions of foliage and light play major roles in various forest functions,accurate,nondestructive measurement of these distributions is difficult due to the complexity of the canopy *** evaluate the foliage and light distributions directly and nondestructively in a mature oak stand,we used the cube method by dividing the forest canopy into small cubes(50 cm per side)and directly measured leaf area density(LAD,the total one-sided leaf area per unit volume,i.e.,cube)and relative irradiance(RI)within each *** distribution of LAD and of RI was highly heterogeneous,even at the same canopy *** heterogeneity reflected the presence of foliage clusters associated with multiple forking *** relationship between cumulative LAD at the canopy surface and average RI followed the Beer-Lambert *** mean light extinction coefficient(K)was ***,K was overestimated by more than double(0.80)when calculated based on the classical method using RI at the forest *** overestimation was caused by the lower RI due to light absorption by nonleaf plant parts below the *** findings on the complex foliage and light distributions in canopy layers should help improve the accuracy of RI and K measurements and thus more accurate predictions of environmental responses and forest functions.

Rotation of a pair of wings was driven by the vertical harmonic motion of a pin inserted into the center hole of the *** elucidate the mechanism by which the rotational motion of the wings was excited,the relationship between the wings and the pin was examined by tracking their motions using both displacement measurements and high-speed *** motion modes occurred in this study were categorized into five types:slipping,rolling,jumping(without eccentricity),jumping(with eccentricity),and *** the case that the hole of the wings was located at a distance from the center of the wings,referred to as″with eccentricity,″the slipping,jumping(with eccentricity),and non-rotation modes *** experimental results showed that the mechanism of the jumping(with eccentricity)was different from that of the other modes(slipping,rolling,jumping(without eccentricity)),which are well known to be driven by the periodical reaction of the wings against the vertical vibration of the *** was found that the jumping(with eccentricity)was driven by the non-periodical force with the collision between the wing hole and the pin.

Application of real-time RT-PCR quantification to evaluate differential expression of Arabidopsis Aux/IAA genes

The molecular techniques including Northern blot, dot blot, in situ hybridization, etc. have been successfully used to estimate semi-quantitatively mRNA levels in plant samples. In this study, we employed a real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) assay using SYBR Green I fluorescence methodology to evaluate accurate quantitation and sequence specific detection of Aux/IAA mRNA levels in Arabidopsis. Results obtained indicate a linear dynamic range of 102-106 Aux/IAA mRNA copies with standard deviations of generally less than 15%. As a model experiment, the outcome of analysis of expression patterns of five Aux/IAA genes in Arabidopsis under various chemical and temperature treatments is presented. The method presented here provides a sensitive and rapid technique to evaluate plant Aux/IAA mRNA expression levels in nanogram order.

Cancer cells adapt to environmental changes and alter their metabolic pathways to promote survival and proliferation. Metabolic reprogramming not only allows tumor cells to maintain a reduction-oxidation balance by rewiring resources for survival, but also causes nutrient addiction or metabolic vulnerability. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death characterized by the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides. Excess iron in ovarian cancer amplifies free oxidative radicals and drives the Fenton reaction, thereby inducing ferroptosis. However, ovarian cancer is characterized by ferroptosis resistance. Therefore, the induction of ferroptosis is an exciting new targeted therapy for ovarian cancer. In this review, potential metabolic pathways targeting ferroptosis were summarized to promote anticancer effects, and current knowledge and future perspectives on ferroptosis for ovarian cancer therapy were discussed. Two therapeutic strategies were highlighted in this review: directly inducing the ferroptosis pathway and targeting metabolic vulnerabilities that affect ferroptosis. The overexpression of SLC7A11, a cystine/glutamate antiporter SLC7A11 (also known as xCT), is involved in the suppression of ferroptosis. xCT inhibition by ferroptosis inducers (e.g., erastin) can promote cell death when carbon as an energy source of glucose, glutamine, or fatty acids is abundant. On the contrary, xCT regulation has been reported to be highly dependent on the metabolic vulnerability. Drugs that target intrinsic metabolic vulnerabilities (e.g., GLUT1 inhibitors, PDK4 inhibitors, or glutaminase inhibitors) predispose cancer cells to death, which is triggered by decreased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate generation or increased reactive oxygen species accumulation. Therefore, therapeutic approaches that either directly inhibit the xCT pathway or target metabolic vulnerabilities may be effective in overcoming ferroptosis resistance. Champagne bottle neck sign in a patient with Moyamoya syndrome

The champagne bottle neck(CBN) sign refers to a reduction in the diameter of the proximal portion of the internal carotid artery that resembles a CBN, and is a characteristic feature of Moyamoya disease. A 43-yearold woman with an infarction of the posterior limb of the left internal capsule was diagnosed with Moyamoya syndrome associated with Graves' disease. The CBN sign was observed bilaterally. Cerebral revascularization surgery was performed, including left-sided superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery anastomosis. During four years of follow-up, she maintained a euthyroid state and did not have any further cerebral ischemic events. The CBN signs remained unchanged on both sides during this time. This is the first report of the CBN sign in a patient with Moyamoya syndrome associated with Graves' disease.

Content Validity of a Self-Management Behavior Assessment Tool for Adult Post-Renal Transplant Recipients Using a Modified Delphi Method

Background: Self-management is important for post-renal transplant recipients to resolve renal dysfunction, heart failure, and post-transplant psychosocial issues, and to maintain transplant kidney function, etc. However, because recipients may be unable to adequately self-manage, healthcare providers need to provide self-management support for recipients to improve their skills and confidence in managing their disease. However, it is difficult to comprehensively assess the self-management behaviors in a busy outpatient support setting. Furthermore, since there are no uniform standards for assessment, it is based on the experience and abilities of medical personnel. Therefore, self-management behavior of post-renal transplant recipients is not sufficiently evaluated. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate content validity of a tool that can assess self-management behaviors of adult post-renal transplant recipients, consisting of consensus components from experts familiar with the follow-up of adult post-renal transplant recipients. Methods: A three-round modified Delphi method was used to assess the self-management behaviors of adult post-renal transplant recipients by a panel of experts consisting of certified transplant recipient coordinators, physicians, outpatient nurses, and researchers familiar with the follow-up of post-renal transplant recipients. Regarding management behaviors of adult post-renal transplant recipients, the experts rated the appropriateness and validity of each item using a Likert scale. Consensus ratings from the experts were made by calculating the median, interquartile range, and interquartile range percentage. In the third round, an item-level content validity index was calculated to assess content validity. Role Expectation of Nurse Managers in Geriatric Health Services Facilities

Back ground: The characteristics of geriatric health services facilities (GHSF) in Japan include provision of care focused on the life of the residents, and there is a need for cooperation between care workers and physical therapists responsible for the care. Thus, it is expected that a nurse manager occupies specific roles suited for the above characteristics that are different from those of medical facilities. Thus, we aimed to clarify the role expected of nurse managers via a questionnaire survey administered to nurses and care workers in GHSF. Methods: We used a descriptive, cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in 56 GHSF all over Japan. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The questionnaires consisted of 35 items for determining role expectation of nurse managers, the background information of respondents. The role of nurse managers was analyzed using principal factor analysis (promax rotation). Findings: A total of 259 nurses and care workers participated in this study. We extracted 34 items by factor analysis, which were classified into three factors (promotion of home nursing, management of medical care, and environment creation for collaboration and education). Among care workers, four factors consisting of 33 items were extracted. Factors one, two, and three were similar to those of nurses;“intervention to ethical problem” was extracted as the additional fourth factor. Conclusion: The roles required for nurse managers in GHSF are the promotion of home nursing, which is the original role of the health services facilities, exhibition of the specialty as a healthcare professional, creation of a work environment that promotes mutual understanding for collaboration with other professionals, and enhancement of the education and training system.
