In this article,we review recently achieved Kerr effect progress in novel liquid crystal（LC） material：vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal（VADHFLC）.With an increasing applied electric field,the induced inplane birefringence of LCs shows quadratic *** theoretical calculations and experimental details are *** an enhanced Kerr constant to 130 nm/V2,this VADHFLC cell can achieve a 2π modulation by a small efficient electric field with a fast response around 100 μs and thus can be employed in both display and photonics devices.

The effect of interaction between liquid crystal （LC） and photoalignment material on the speed of optical rewriting process is investigated. The theoretical analysis shows that a smaller frank elastic constant K22 of liquid crystal corresponds to a larger twist angle, which gives rise to a larger rewriting speed. Six different LC cells with the same boundary conditions （one substrate is covered with rubbed polyimide （PI） and the other with photo sensitive rewritable sulfuric dye I（SD1）） are tested experimentally under the same illumination intensity （450 nm, 80 mW/cm2）. The results demonstrate that with a suitable liquid crystal, the LC optical rewriting speed for e-paper application can be obviously improved. For two well known LC materials E7 （K22 is larger） and 5CB （K22 is smaller）, they require 11 s and 6 s corresponding to change alignment direction for generating image information.

光驱动液晶显示(optically driving liquid crystal display,ODLCD)通过偏振光控制液晶分子的取向来实现显示功能,它已经被广泛应用在各种光电器件中。然而,由于ODLCD较大的擦写时间和响应时间,它在实际应用中仍然受到了一定的限制。本文在ODLCD的光取向层azo dye(SD1)中掺杂了氧化镍(NiO)纳米粒子,并探究了NiO纳米粒子对ODLCD的擦写时间和响应时间的影响。同时,利用扫描电镜、透射电镜和原子力显微镜研究了NiO在SD1取向层的分布和微观形貌。实验结果表明,随着NiO浓度增加,NiO在SD1薄膜的粒径逐渐变大。在不同质量比(1∶0到1∶0.1)的SD1-NiO中,质量比为1∶0.08的SD1-NiO制备的ODLCD具有最小为6.8 s的擦写时间。此外,对于传统的电驱动液晶显示(liquid crystal display,LCD)应用中,掺杂比为1∶0.02的SD1-NiO所制备的ODLCD的响应时间被降低5 ms。

A liquid crystal Pancharatnam–Berry（PB） axilens is proposed and fabricated via a digital micro-mirrordevice-based photo-patterning system. The polarization-dependent device behaves as an axilens for a lefthanded circularly polarized incident beam, for which an optical ring is focused with a long focal depth in the transverse direction at the output, and an anti-axilens for a right-handed circularly polarized incident beam,for which an optical ring gradually expands at the output. The modification of the size and the sharpness of the diffracted ring beam is demonstrated by encoding a positive（negative） PB lens term into the director expression of a PB（anti-）axicon.

This paper describes a new type of polymeric waveguides which has the core, cladding medium and active nodes made from the same material. Part of the polymer is removed in cladding medium by formation of nanopores. The pores can be filled with liquid crystals (LC) in order to create an active composite medium needed for electrically controlled nodes formation.

我们研究了可用于光致取向液晶(LCs)偶氮染料的合成和性质,提出了偶氮染料的结构与合成过程。偶氮染料光致取向完全是因为分子吸收振子垂直于UV光偏振方向的再取向。讨论了在偏振光场中,偶氮染料分子旋转扩散现象的定性模型。测量了波长为372nm时,偏振吸收光谱的有序参数S=-0.4(80%的最大绝对值Sm=-0.5)。对一个偶氮染料膜,利用在正常的正入射偏振光之后,紧跟一个斜入射的非偏振光两步曝光,可以获得温度稳定的5.3°预倾角。光致取向基片的方位角锚定能为Aφ≈10-4Jm-2,这与摩擦聚酰亚胺(PI)层的锚定能相同。我们发现,光致取向液晶盒的电压保持率甚至比摩擦PI层取向的还高,因此,偶氮染料完全可以用作有源矩阵液晶显示器的取向层。光致取向偶氮染料层的热稳定性很高,但UV稳定性需通过诸如聚合等来改良。于是,我们设想了一种新的基于聚合偶氮染料层的LCD取向技术。
