Changes in symptom patterns and health-related quality of life of cancer patients before and after chemotherapy

OBJECTIVE: Symptom patterns are an important diagnostic concept in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although symptom patterns and healthrelated quality of life(HRQOL) are common diagnostic measures for cancer patients, the association between them has not been studied. This study aimed to describe the changes in the pattern of symptoms of Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, blood stasis, and HRQOL before and after chemotherapy,and to examine the association between the patterns and the cancer patients' ***: A panel study was undertaken with 123 cancer patients who were about to begin their first course of chemotherapy at four teaching hospitals in taiwan. A structured questionnaire was used before and after chemotherapy. HRQOL was assessed using the Medical Outcomes Survey Short-Form 36. The Traditional Chinese Medical Constitutional Scale was used to measure Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, and blood stasis patterns,with higher scores indicating a larger ***: The patients had significantly worse scores for Yang-deficient pattern, Yin-deficiency pattern, blood stasis pattern, and the physical components of HRQOL after chemotherapy compared with before chemotherapy. The HRQOL scores correlated significantly with Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, and the blood stasis pattern scores. A generalized estimating equation model showed that the HRQOL scores were significantly worse after chemotherapy compared with before chemotherapy for the physical component, but not for the mental component. Blood stasis pattern was significantly associated with a decreased HRQOL in both the physical and mental components. A hemoglobin level < 12 g/d L was associated with a worse physical component of ***: The Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency,and blood stasis patterns were all associated with lower HRQOLincancerpatientsafterchemotherapy.

【目的】研究连作木薯对非根际和根际土壤理化性质变化及细菌群落演替的影响,为系统阐明木薯连作障碍形成机制及其缓解措施研发提供理论依据。【方法】以木薯品种华南205为试验材料,在撂荒地上连续种植3年,每年木薯块根成熟期(植后250 d)采集土壤样品。结合土壤农化分析、高通量测序技术和生物信息学手段,研究连作木薯对非根际和根际土壤理化性质及细菌群演替的影响。【结果】与种植第1年木薯相比,连作2年和3年的木薯非根际和根际土壤pH及有机质、碱解氮和速效磷含量降低,脲酶活性提高,除速效磷外,其他指标的变化均达显著水平(P有机质含量>pH>速效磷含量>脲酶活性。【结论】连作会导致木薯非根际和根际土壤理化性质、细菌群落多样性和丰富度发生变化,土壤理化性质和细菌群落结构均在连作第3年出现明显劣化。木薯土壤理化性质变化与土壤细菌群落结构差异存在一定相关性,有益菌丰度降低可能是木薯连作造成土壤细菌群落劣化演替的重要原因之一。

A 60-year-old female patient suffered unhealed wounds over left flank for around 30 years after surgical removal of left renal stones. Fecal material spilled from the two small openings of the scar, bothered her all day long. During the course of the 30 years, she suffered from intermittent fever, diarrhea and wound pain and presented with malnourished condition. After serial examinations, tumor associated with iatrogenic colo-cutaneous fistula was impressed and she received en bloc resection. Pathology revealed squamous cell carcinoma arising from the fistula with colon and spleen invasion. To the best of our knowledge,no such case has been reported, as yet.

Maternal helminth infection protects offspring from high-fat-diet-induced obesity through altered microbiota and SCFAs

Helminth-induced Th2 immunity and gut microbiota have been recently shown to be highly effective in modulating metabolic syndromes in animal *** study aimed to determine whether maternal immunity and microbial factors affect the induction and development of obesity in ***,Heligomosomoides polygyrus(Hp)-infected or control female C57BL/6J mice mated with normal males and their offspring were fed a high-fat diet(HFD)for 9 weeks after *** results showed that Hp-induced maternal outcomes during gestation and lactation significantly impacted offspring metabolic *** was evidenced by results showing that offspring from helminth-infected mothers on an HFD(Hp-offspring+HFD)gained significantly less body weight than those from uninfected mothers(Cont-offspring+HFD).Hp-offspring+HFD exhibited no Th2 phenotype but displayed a pattern of gut microbiota composition similar to that of Hp-infected ***-fostering experiments confirmed that the helminth-induced maternal attenuation of offspring obesity was mediated through both prenatal and postnatal *** results further showed that helminth-infected dams and their offspring had a markedly altered gut microbiome composition,with increased production of short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs).Intriguingly,Hp-infected mothers and Hp-offspring+HFD showed increased SCFA receptor(GPR)expression in adipose and colonic tissues compared to noninfected mothers and Cont-offspring+HFD,***,SCFA supplementation to the pups of uninfected control mothers during lactation protected against HFD-induced weight gain,which corresponded with changes in gut bacterial ***,our findings provide new insights into the complex interaction of maternal immune status and gut microbiome,Hp infection,and the immunity and gut microbiome in obese-prone offspring in infant life.

An APXPS endstation for gas–solid and liquid–solid interface studies at SSRF

In the past few decades, various surface analysis techniques find wide applications in studies of interfacial phenomena ranging from fundamental surface science,catalysis, environmental science and energy *** the help of bright synchrotron sources, many of these techniques have been further advanced into novel in-situ/operando tools at synchrotron user facilities, providing molecular level understanding of chemical/electrochemical processes in-situ at gas–solid and liquid–solid *** a proper endstation for a dedicated beamline is one of the challenges in utilizing these techniques efficiently for a variety of user's requests. Many factors,including pressure differential, geometry and energy of the photon source, sample and analyzer, need to be optimized for the system of interest. In this paper, we discuss the design and performance of a new endstation at beamline02 B at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility for ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy *** system, equipped with the newly developed hightransmission HiPP-3 analyzer, is demonstrated to be capable of efficiently collecting photoelectrons up to 1500 eV from ultrahigh vacuum to ambient pressure of 20 *** spectromicroscopy mode of HiPP-3 analyzer also enables detection of photoelectron spatial distribution with resolution of 2.8 ± 0.3 lm in one dimension. In addition,the designing strategies of systems that allow investigations in phenomena at gas–solid interface and liquid–solid interface will be highlighted through our discussion.

Natural killer (NK) cells are indispensable components of both the innate and adaptive immune response. However,their precise roles in the cross-talk between innate and adaptive immunity during influenza virus infection remaincontroversial. By comparing NK cell dynamics and activity under a sub-lethal dose and high dose of influenza virusinfection, we showed that influenza virus PR8 directly infected NK cells during natural infection, which wasconsistent with our previous findings obtained from an in vitro investigation of human NK cells. The impairments incytotoxicity and IFN-γ production by spleen NK cells following high-dose infection were accompanied by decreasedvirus-specific killing mediated by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Importantly, the weakened CTL activity could bereversed by adoptive transfer of spleen NK cells harvested from low-dose-infected mice but not healthy *** together, our data provide direct evidence supporting the contribution of NK cells to antiviral T-cellresponses. This study also indicates that a novel NK-targeted immune evasion strategy is used by influenza virusto shrink both innate and adaptive immune responses.

Muon radiography is a promising technique for imaging the internal density structures of targets such as tunnels,pyramids,and volcanoes up to a scale of a few hundred meters by measuring the flux attenuation of cosmic ray muons after they have traveled through these *** this study,we conducted experimental muon radiography of one of the volcanoes in the Wudalianchi area in Northeast China to image its internal density *** muon detector used in this study was composed of plastic scintillators and silicon *** approximately one and a half months of observing the crater and conduit of the Laoheishan volcano cone in Wudalianchi from September 23^(rd) to November 10^(th) 2019,more than 3 million muon tracks fulfilling the data selection criteria were *** on the muon samples and high-resolution topography obtained through aerial photogrammetry using an unmanned aerial vehicle,a density image of the Laoheishan volcano cone was *** results obtained in this experiment demonstrate the feasibility of using a radiography technique based on plastic scintillator *** obtain the density distribution,we performed a detailed background analysis and found that low-energy charged particles dominated the background *** higher densities were found near the surface of the volcanic cone,whereas relatively lower densities were found near the center of the volcanic *** experiment in this study is the first volcano muon tomography study performed in *** work provides an important reference for future research.

Replanting Affects the Tree Growth and Fruit Quality of Gala Apple

Apple replant disease（ARD） causes the inhibition of root system development, stunts tree growth and so on. To further investigate the effects of ARD on apple fruits, a 25-year-old apple orchard was remediated to establish a replant orchard between November 2008 and March 2009. A rotational cropping orchard was established on an adjacent wheat field. The cultivar and rootstock-scion combination used in the newly established orchards was Royal Gala/M26/Malus hupehensis Rehd. Ripe fruits were collected in mid-August 2011 and mid-August 2012, meanwhile, the following indices were measured： yield per plant; fruit weight; the fruit shape index; the contents of anthocyanin, carotenoid and chlorophyll; the soluble sugar content in the flesh; titratable acid; the sugar-acid ratio; firmness; and aroma components; apple plant ground diameter, plant height increment and the total length of the current-year shoots. The results showed that compared to rotational cropping, continuous cropping yielded statistically significant reductions in fruit weight and yield per plant of 39.8 and 76.5%, respectively. However, there were no changes in the fruit shape index. The anthocyanin and carotenoid contents decreased by 81.7 and 37.7%, respectively, while the chlorophyll content increased by 251.0%. All of these differences in content were statistically significant. The soluble sugar levels and sugar-acid ratio decreased by 25.4 and 60.9%, respectively, but the titratable acid levels and fruit firmness increased by 90.9 and 42.8%, respectively. Ten of the most important esters contributing to the apple aroma were analyzed, and the following changes were observed： hexyl acetate, butyl acetate, hexyl butyrate, acetate-2-methyl butyl, 2-methyl-hexyl butyrate, amyl acetate, butyl butyrate, 2-methyl-butyl butyrate, hexyl propionate and hexyl hexanoate decreased by 25.5, 78.4, 89.1, 55.5, 79.5, 77.2, 86.8, 69.9, 61.2, and 68.1%, respectively.
