Stress Assessment by Salivary Biomarkers in Patients with Lung Cancer Undergoing Chemotherapy

Background: It is important for medical staffs to understand the state of stress of patients with cancer. The authors investigated stress assessment in patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and Method: Salivary cortisol and α-amylase were measured as stress markers before and after chemotherapy in 10 patients. Emotional status was assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire, and Quality of Life (QOL) was assessed using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung (FACT-L) questionnaire. Results: No significant differences were found between the before and after chemotherapy in salivary levels of cortisol or α-amylase, the POMS and QOL scores. The salivary cortisol levels correlated with the POMS subscales of anger-hostility, and confusion. A negative correlation was observed between the salivary cortisol level and the QOL full score. The FACT-L full score correlated with the POMS subscales of depression-dejection, fatigue, and confusion. Purpose: To identify factors related to changes in foot status and foot care in patients with diabetes mellitus participating in an exercise program. Methods: The subjects were 21 patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (8 males, 13 females). The mean age of the patients was 62.3 ± 12.5 years old. Foot status, physical measurements and daily activities were monitored and several surveys were performed. Results: Changes in foot status were significantly positively correlated with walking at normal speed (r = 0.54, p < 0.05) and fast speed (r = 0.68, p p < 0.05). Foot care showed a significant negative correlation with burden of diet therapy (r = -0.48, p < 0.05) and a significant positive correlation with the self-efficacy of diet therapy (r = 0.65, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Subjects who were fast walkers showed greater changes in foot status. Poor foot care behavior is also related to greater changes in foot status. Regular interventions for foot care are important to improve self-care behavior during an exercise program.

Factors Influencing Behavior of Taking Medicine in Elderly Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis

Purpose: The elderly are often faced with multiple diseases, in particular hemodialysis (HD) which requires many kinds of medication. This study examined the factors influencing the behavior of taking medicine in elderly patients undergoing HD. Subjects and Methods: The subjects comprised 70 outpatients > 65 years undergoing HD (48 male and 22 female). The mean age of the patients was 72.5 ± 4.4 years. The mean duration of dialysis history was 6.1 ± 5.2 years. We performed a questionnaire survey using Medication Assessment Tool, The Kidney Disease Quality of Life (QOL)-Short Form and Acceptance for Dialysis Instrument. Result: Two factors related to poor behavior of taking medicine: dialysis history < 2 years and poor acceptance of dialysis. The multiple regression analysis showed patient satisfaction (β = –0.329, p < 0.01) and symptoms/problems (β = –0.273, p<0.05) as significant independent variables relating to behavior of taking medicine. Conclusion: Poor behavior of taking medicine is related to a short dialysis period, poor acceptance and poor satisfaction of dialysis therapy in elderly patients.

Humidity measurement in a very low moisture atmosphere was studied by using solid electrolyte film coated with porous electrodes,considering its application to the moisture monitoring of SF_6 gas-insulated high voltage instruments such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas circuit breakers (GCBs).Compared to the AC impedance values measured in an ambient atmosphere where the moisture atmosphere is far higher than that in these instruments,considerably large impedance values were obtained in a very low moisture *** impedance was systematically measured in accordance with the conditions of these instruments whose moisture contents were less than 1 000×10^(-6).A good correlation was obtained between the impedance values and the moisture *** frequency characteristics of the impedance were analyzed based on a conventional equivalent circuit where a number of CR circuits were connected in *** the dielectric relaxation of each circuit,it was found that the frequency characteristics of the impedance can be explained by the equivalent circuit. Two semicircles were clearly obtained in the Cole-Cole impedance plot which are thought to reflect the impedance characteristics of the film and the *** AC impedance can be a good indicator of the moisture content of SF_6 gas-insulated high voltage instruments.

Influence of proton pump inhibitor treatment on Helicobacter pylori stool antigen test

AIM: To investigate the effects of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment on stool antigen test using the TestMate pylori enzyme immunoassay. METHODS: This study assessed 28 patients [16 men and 12 women; mean age (63.1 ± 5.9) years; range, 25-84 years] who underwent stool antigen test and urea breath test (UBT) before and after PPI administration. RESULTS: Using the UBT as the standard, the sensitivity, specif icity and agreement of the stool antigen test in all 28 patients were 95.2%, 71.4%, and 89.3%, respectively, before PPI administration, and 88.9%, 90.9%, and 89.3%, respectively, after PPI treatment. Mean UBT values were 23.98% ± 5.33% before and 16.19% ± 4.75% after PPI treatment and, in 15 patients treated for ≥ 4 wk, were signif icantly lower after than before 4 wk of PPI treatment (12.58% ± 4.49% vs 24.53% ± 8.53%, P = 0.048). The mean optical density (A450/630) ratios on the stool antigen test were 1.16 ± 0.20 before and 1.17 ± 0.24 after PPI treatment (P = 0.989), and were 1.02 ± 0.26 and 0.69 ± 0.28, respectively, in the group treated for > 4 wk (P = 0.099).

Intervention Effect Based on Self-Regulation to Promote the Continuation of Self-Care Behavior of Patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a support program based on self-regulation. [Methods] Participants: Patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus in rural areas;Research design: Quasi-experimental research. A t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were performed to compare the intervention and control groups before the intervention. For the comparison within the groups before and after the interventions, a t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were performed. For statistical analysis, the significance level was set to 5%. [Results] The intervention group included 19 participants (age 59.8 ± 6.14) and 10 participants in the control group (age 64.3 ± 3.95). After the program, the scores in knowledge about diabetes (p = 0.001) and sub-items of the diabetes self-management (foot care) (p = 0.048) of the intervention group statistically significantly increased, and the calorie intake decreased (p = 0.080). The intervention group had higher scores in all three sub items of the self-efficacy (positiveness, control, and total score). There were no statistically significant differences in the changes in BMI, HbA1c, and the subscales of self-efficacy between the two groups. However, the scores of these items of the intervention and control groups were 3.3 and 2.9, 2.2 and −0.3, and 5.5 and 2.6, respectively. [Conclusions] The support program based on self-regulation in this study helped the participants to acquire general knowledge of diabetes to assess own medical condition and problems in self-care behavior and practical knowledge to manage diabetes in daily life, and this shows the effectiveness of the program.
