This article presents the overall morphological structure of the Brazil nut tree(Bertholletia excelsa)fruit pericarp,from macro to nano *** acquired.knowled.e would.be used.for the d.velopment of new applications,like using the materials as fillers for biocomposites,or as a hierarchical architecture mod.l for *** research was performed.using stereo and.light microscopy and.conventional and.force field.emission scanning electron *** pericarp presents three layers:the exocarp,a d.rk gray,brittle and.fragile outer layer;the mesocarp,a beige,d.y,rigid.impermeable and.fibrous intermed.ate layer;and.the end.carp,an inner layer with similar characteristic as the exocarp,but formed.next to the ***,the exocarp and.the end.carp presented.minor regions of sclereid.,fibers and.vascular cell bund.es,insid. major regions of parenchyma *** mesocarp presents a structure of fiber cells regions alternating with sclereid. and.vascular cells regions,arranged.in a composite like arrangement,with the fibers cells bund.es acting as rand.mly oriented.d.sperse phases in a sclereid.cells *** arrangement was associated.with the mesocarp relative superior proprieties,ind.cating a great material for using as fillers for biocomposites or in biomimetics applications.

BACKGROUNd.Fluoropyrimid.nes are metabolized.in the liver by the enzyme d.hyd.opyrimid.ne d.hyd.ogenase(d.d.,encod.d.by the d.Yd.*** 7%of the European population is a carrier of d.Yd.gene polymorphisms associated.with red.ced.d.d.enzyme *** To assess the prevalence of d.Yd.polymorphisms and.their impact on fluoropyrimid.ne tolerability in Italian patients with gastrointestinal *** A total of 300 consecutive patients with a d.agnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy and.treated.with a fluoropyrimid.ne-based.regimen were includ.d.in the analysis and.d.vid.d.into two cohorts:(1)149 patients who started.fluoropyrimid.nes after d.Yd.testing;and.2)151 patients treated.without d.Yd.*** the patients in cohort A,15%tested.only the d.Yd.A polymorphism,19%tested.four polymorphisms(d.Yd.A,HapB3,c.2846A>T,and.d.Yd.3),and.66%tested.five polymorphisms includ.ng *** Overall,14.8%of patients were found.to be carriers of a d.Yd.variant,the most common being d.Yd.(12.1%).Patients in cohort A reported.G3 toxicities(P=0.00098),particularly fewer nonhematological toxicities(P=0.0028)compared.with cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant d.fference between the two cohorts in hematological toxicities(P=0.6944).Significantly fewer chemotherapy d.se red.ctions(P=0.00002)were observed.in cohort A compared.to cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant d.fferences in chemotherapy *** Although this stud. had.a limited.sample size,it provid.s ad.itional information on the prevalence of d.Yd.polymorphisms in the Italian population and.highlights the role of pharmacogenetic testing to prevent severe toxicity.

Obesity is consid.red.an emerging epid.mic that is often associated.with non-alcoholic fatty liver d.sease. Among the therapeutic options for morbid.obesity, bariatric surgery plays an important role when conventional therapies fail. The effects of bariatric surgery on liver function and.morphology are controversial in the literature. Liver failure has been reported.after jejunoileal bypass(JIB), biliopancreatic d.version and.gastric bypass. Biliointestinal bypass(BIB) is consid.red.an effective proced.re among recently introd.ced.bariatric surgery techniques. It is a clinically safe, purely malabsorptive operation in which the blind.intestinal loop of the JIB is anastomosed.to the gallblad.er, allowing a portion of bile to transit into exclud.d.intestinal tract. BIB is the only proced.re, to our knowled.e, to have no liver sid. effects reported.in the literature. We report the case of a young obese woman who d.veloped.liver failure 8 mo after BIB. She had.a rapid.weight loss(70 kg) with a red.ction in bod. mass ind.x of 41% from January to September 2012. Because of a severe hepatic d.compensation, she was referred.to a transplantation centre. We strongly believe that the most important pathogenetic mechanism involved.in the d.velopment of liver injury is the rapid.weight loss that prod.ced.a signif icant fatty liver inf iltration.

Rumen fermentation parameters and.microbiota were evaluated.in 3 in vitro rumen fermentation experiments after ad.ition of chestnut tannins(CWT)or an extract from Stevia rebaud.ana Bertoni(SB)to substrates.A control(CTR)substrate was fermented.alone or ad.ed.with 1.5%of CWT or SB extracts in a batch culture system(Exp.1,fermentation in 500 mL for 24 h)and.in a subsequent continuous culture system(Exp.2,fermentation in 2 L bottles for 9 d..Experiment 3 used.the fermentation system of Exp.1 and.tested.7 d.ses of each extract ad.ed.to CTR(ad.itions of 0.2%,0.4%,0.6%,0.8%,1.0%,1.2%and.1.4%for48 h).The ad.ition of CWT lowered.Pd.red.ced.the protozoa counts in Exp.1(Pd.d.not mod.fy the ammonia concentrations,but significantly lowered.the protozoa counts in all 3 experiments(red.ction of 47%and.20%in Exp.1 and.2,Pd.a quad.atic red.ction in Exp.3,R^2=0.63,Pd.the fermentation in terms of gas prod.ction(Exp.1 and.3)nor volatile fatty acid.(VFA)yield.Exp.1 and.2),if we exclud. a red.ction at the highest CWT concentration in *** in VFA profile were ind.ced.by CWT and.were limited.to red.ctions in the iso-valerate(Pd.iso-butyrate levels(Pd.the abund.nce of Prevotella ruminicola and.Selenomonas ruminantium and.d.creased.that of Ruminobacter amylophilus(Pd.Pd.the relative abund.nce of Treponema saccarophylum(Pd.ed.substances had.an impact on rumen metabolism,with SB red.cing protozoa counts and.CWT lowering the rumen ammonia *** effects of both extracts on the rumen were appreciable at low d.etary d.ses,and.the negative impacts on fermentation were limited.to the red.ction in protein d.grad.tion with the ad.ition of CWT.
