An integrated approach to investigate climate-driven rockfall occurrence in high alpine slopes: the Bessanese glacial basin, Western Italian Alps

Rockfalls are one of the most common instability processes in high *** represent a relevant issue,both for the risks they represent for(infra)structures and frequentation,and for their potential role as terrestrial indicators of climate *** study aims to contribute to the growing topic of the relationship between climate change and slope instability at the basin *** selected study area is the Bessanese glacial basin(Western Italian Alps)which,since 2016,has been specifically equipped,monitored and investigated for this *** order to provide a broader context for the interpretation of the recent rockfall events and associated climate conditions,a cross-temporal and integrated approach has been *** this purpose,geomorphological investigations(last 100 years),local climate(last 30 years)and near-surface rock/air temperatures analyses,have been carried *** research outcomes show that rockfalls occurred in two different geomorphological positions:on rock slopes in permafrost condition,facing from NW to NE and/or along the glacier margins,on rock slopes uncovered by the ice in the last *** thaw of the active layer and/or glacier debutressing can be deemed responsible for slope failure *** regard to timing,almost all dated rock falls occurred in *** the July events,initiation may have been caused by a combination of rapid snow melt and enhanced seasonal thaw of the active layer due to anomalous high temperatures,and *** events are,instead,associated with a significant positive temperature anomaly on the quarterly scale,and they can be ascribed to the rapid and/or in depth thaw of the permafrost active *** to our findings,we can expect that in the Bessanese glacierized basin,as in similar high mountain areas,climate change will cause an increase of slope instability in the *** fasten knowledge deepening,we highlight the need for a growth of a network of high elevation

Trends in tropospheric ozone concentrations and forest impact metrics in Europe over the time period 2000–2014

In Europe,tropospheric ozone pollution appears as a major air quality issue,and ozone concentrations remain potentially harmful to *** this study we compared the trends of two ozone metrics widely used for forests protection in Europe,the AOT40(Accumulated Ozone over Threshold of 40 ppb)which only depends on surface air ozone concentrations,and the Phytotoxic Ozone Dose which is the accumulated ozone uptake through stomata over the growing season,and above a threshold Y of uptake(PODY).By using a chemistry transport model,we found that European-averaged ground-level ozone concentrations(−2%)and AOT40 metric(−26.5%)significantly declined from 2000 to 2014,due to successful control strategies to reduce the emission of ozone precursors in Europe since the early *** contrast,the stomatal ozone uptake by forests increased from 17.5 to 26.6 mmol O3 m^(−2)despite the reduction in ozone concentrations,leading to an increase of potential ozone damage on plants in *** a climate change context,a biologically-sound stomatal flux-based standard(PODY)as new European legislative standard is needed.

Feeding broiler chickens with arginine above recommended levels:effects on growth performance,metabolism,and intestinal microbiota

Background Arginine is an essential amino acid for chickens and feeding diets with arginine beyond the recommended levels has been shown to influence the growth performance of broiler chickens in a positive ***,further research is required to understand how arginine supplementation above the widely adopted dosages affects metabolism and intestinal health of ***,this study was designed to assess the effects of arginine supplementation(i.e.,total arginine to total lysine ratio of 1.20 instead of 1.06-1.08 recommended by the breeding company) on growth performance of broiler chickens and to explore its impacts on the hepatic and blood metabolic profiles,as well as on the intestinal *** this purpose,630 one-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were assigned to 2 treatments(7 replicates each) fed a control diet or a crystalline L-arginine-supplemented diet for 49 *** Compared to control birds,those supplemented with arginine performed significantly better exhibiting greater final body weight at D49(3778 vs.3937 g;P < 0.001),higher growth rate(76.15 vs.79.46 g of body weight gained daily;P < 0.001),and lower cumulative feed conversion ratio(1.808 vs.1.732;P < 0.05).Plasma concentrations of arginine,betaine,histidine,and creatine were greater in supplemented birds than in their control counterparts,as were those of creatine,leucine and other essential amino acids at the hepatic *** contrast,leucine concentration was lower in the caecal content of supplemented *** alpha diversity and relative abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria(specifically Escherichia coli),as well as increased abundance of Bacteroidetes and Lactobacillus salivarius were found in the caecal content of supplemented *** The improvement in growth performance corroborates the advantages of supplementing arginine in broiler *** can be hypothesized that the performance enhancement found in this study is associated with the i

Evaluation of dietary addition of 2 essential oils from Achillea moschata,or their components (bornyl acetate,camphor,and eucalyptol) on in vitro ruminal fermentation and microbial community composition

This study investigated the effects of 2 Achillea moschata essential oils extracted from plants collected in 2 different valleys of the Italian Alps and 3 pure compounds of oils—bornyl acetate(BOR),camphor(CAM),and eucalyptol(EUCA)—on in vitro ruminal fermentation and *** in vitro batch fermentation experiment(Exp.1)tested the addition of all of the substances(2 essential oils and 3 compounds)in fermentation bottles(120 mL)at 48 h of incubation,whereas a subsequent in vitro continuous culture experiment(Exp.2)evaluated the pure compounds added to the fermenters(2 L)for a longer incubation period(9 d).In both experiments,total mixed rations were incubated with the additives,and samples without additives were included as the control(CTR).Each treatment was tested in duplicate and was repeated in 3 and 2 fermentation runs in Exp.1 and 2,*** production(GP)in Exp.1 was similar for all of the treatments,and short chain volatile fatty acid(SCFA)production was similar in both experiments except for a decrease of SCFA produced(P=0.029)due to EUCA addition in *** to CTR,BOR and CAM reduced the valerate proportion(P=0.04)in Exp.1,and increased(P<0.01)the acetate proportion in *** treatments increased(P<0.01)total protozoa counts(+36.7%and+48.4%compared to CTR on average for Exp.1 and 2,respectively).In Exp.1,all of the treatments lowered the Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and increased the Proteobacteria relative abundances(P<0.05),whereas in Exp.2,the EUCA addition increased(P=0.012)the *** Exp.1,methane(CH4)as a proportion of the GP was lowered(P=0.004)by the addition of CAM and EUCA compared to CTR,whereas in Exp.2,EUCA reduced the amount of stoichiometrically calculated CH4 compared to ***,essential oils extracted from *** and the pure compounds did not depress in vitro rumen fermentation,except for EUCA in *** both experiments,an increase of the protozoal population occurred for all the additives.

Identification in Lupin Seed of a Serine- Endopeptidase Activity Cleaving between Twin Arginine Pairs and Causing Limited Proteolysis of Seed Storage Proteins

The occurrence of twin-arginine motifs （-R-R-） in the amino acid sequences of animal pro-proteins frequently defines the cleavage site（s） for their structural/functional maturation. No information is available on the presence and possible biological meaning of these motifs in the seed storage proteins. In this work, a novel endopeptidase activity with cleavage specificity to twin-arginine pairs has been detected in mature dry Lupinus albus seeds. The endopeptidase was tested with a number of endogenous and exogenous protein substrates, which were selected according to the pres- ence of one or more twin-arginine residue motifs in their amino acid sequences. The observed hydrolysis patterns were limited and highly specific. Partial proteolysis led to stable polypeptide fragments that were characterized by 1- and 2-D electrophoresis. Selected polypeptides were submitted to N-terminal amino acid sequencing and mass spectrometry anal- yses, These approaches, supported by bioinformatic analysis of the available sequences, allowed the conclusion that the polypeptide cleavage events had occurred at the peptide bonds comprised between twin-arginine residue pairs with all tested protein substrates. The endopeptidase activity was inhibited by 4-（2-AminoEthyl）Benzene-Sulphonyl Fluoride hy- drochloride （AEBSF）, leupeptin, and serine proteinase protein inhibitors, while it was not affected by pepstatin, trans- EpoxysuccinyI-L-leucylamido（4-guanidino）butane （E64）, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid （EDTA）, thus qualifying the Arg-Arg cleaving enzyme as a serine endopeptidase. The structural features of storage proteins from lupin and other legume seeds strongly support the hypothesis that the occurrence of an endopeptidase activity cleaving -R-R- bonds may be functional to facilitate their degradation at germination and possibly generate polypeptide fragments with specific biological activity.

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation: Case presentation of a young man

Ectopic thymic tissue can be present in the thyroid gland and a carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation(CASTLE) may arise from such tissue. We are reported the case of a 26-year-old man with CASTLE, with cervical subcutaneous nodules relapse, who showed a good response to treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The problematic aspect of this case was the diagnosis; only on review were we able to make a final diagnosis. CASTLE is a very rare neoplasm. It is important to differentiate this cancer from others tumors such as primary or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck or squamous cell thyroid carcinoma, because the therapy and prognosis are *** is complicated and requires careful histological analysis(CD5- and P63-positive with presence of Hassall's corpuscles); unfortunately there is no gold standard treatment so, in this case, we administered a sandwich of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Combined powder metallurgy routes to improve thermal and mechanical response of Al−Sn composite phase change materials

Powder metallurgy processes are suitable to produce form-stable solid−liquid phase change materials from miscibility gap *** allow to obtain a composite metallic material with good dispersion of low-melting active phase particles in a high-melting passive matrix,preventing leakage of the particles during phase transition and,therefore,increasing the stability of thermal ***,the matrix provides structural *** aim of this work is to combine conventional powder mixing techniques(simple mixing and ball milling)to improve active phase isolation and mechanical properties of an Al−Sn *** matter of fact,ball milling of Sn powder allows to reduce hardness difference with Al powder;moreover,ball milling of the two powders together results in fine microstructure with improved mechanical *** addition,different routes applied showed that thermal response depends on the microstructure and,in particular,on the particle size of the active *** more detail,coarse active phase particles provide a fast heat release with small undercooling,while small particles solidify more slowly in a wide range of *** the other hand,melting and,consequently,heat storage are independent of the particle size of the active *** potentially allows to“tailor”the thermal response by producing alloys with suitable microstructure.
