The novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19)has hit the healthcare system worldwide.The risk of severe infection and mortality increases with advancing age,especially in subjects with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease,hypertension,diabetes,obesity and cancer.Moreover,cardiovascular complications such as myocardial injury,heart failure and thromboembolism are frequently observed in COVID-19 cases,and several biomarkers(troponin,NTpro BNP and D-Dimer)have been identified as prognostic indicators of disease severity and worst outcome.Currently,there is no specific therapy against SARS-Co V-2,although many medications are under investigation.The aim of this review will be to explore the intertwined relationship between COVID-19 disease and the cardiovascular system,focusing on elderly population.The available supportive treatments along with the related concerns in elderly patients,due to their comorbidities and polypharmacotherapy,will be explored.

Playing together,laughing together:rapid facial mimicry and social sensitivity in lowland gorillas

n nonhuman animals,the phenomenon of rapid facial mimicry(RFM)—the automatic,involuntary,and rapid(<1 s)replication of others’facial expressions—has been mainly investigated in the playful domain.In immature lowland gorillas Gorilla gorilla gorilla both play face(PF)and full PF(FPF)are rapidly mimicked between the players.This makes the species suitable to test hypotheses on the factors influencing RFM during play.The observations on 3 captive groups of lowland gorillas(N=27)revealed that contrary to expectations,the closeness of social bond negatively influenced the occurrence of RFM but it did not affect either RFM latency or its overlapping index(OVERLAP).RFM was affected by the degree of symmetry of play fighting:the more balanced the session,the higher the occurrence of RFM.Players of the same sex class responded faster than players of different sex.These findings suggest that RFM may help synchronizing behaviors of playmates matching in size(same-sex)and promote symmetric playful interactions.“Laughing together”(measured by the RFM OVERLAP)lasted longer when the responder perfectly mirrored the partner expression(PF→PF;FPF→FPF).If PF and FPF convey information on the different play roughness degree,through“laughing together”the players could coordinate their actions and share positive moods and playful intensity.If the perfect congruency in the motor resonance,also known as social sensitivity,can foster a possible emotional dialogue between gorillas remains to be investigated.

Introduction:Parkinson's disease PD is a common neurodegenerative disorder mainly characterized by the progressive decline of motor function with a prevalence that is greatly increasing since the pathology is principally driven by aging.The currently available treatments only mitigate motor symptoms;therefore,a great deal of studies are aimed at finding novel drugs that are able to arrest the evolution of the disease.The progressive death of nigrostriatal dopaminergic(DA)neurons and the formation of the typical Lewy bodies neuronal inclusions containing misfolded alpha-synuclein are two key histopathological features of the disease.However,it is now evident that PD has to be considered as a heterogeneous disorder that includes subtypes with distinctive clinical and biological characteristics(Ryden and Lewis,2019).

Determination of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after molecularly imprinted polymer extraction

A solid phase extraction procedure(SPE)is described for the quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in atmospheric particulate matter(PM),as ubiquitous environmental pollutants routinely measured in air qualitymonitoring.A SPE cartridge was used based on a molecular imprinted polymer(MIP-SPE)properly tailored for selective retention of PAHs with 4 and more benzene fused rings.The performance of the clean-up procedure was evaluated with the specific concern of selective purification towards saturated hydrocarbons,which are the PM components mostly interfering GC analysis of target PAHs.Under optimized operative conditions,the MIP-SPE provided analyte recovery close to 95%for heavier PAHs,from benzo(α)pyrene to benzo(ghi)perylene,and close to 90%for four benzene rings PAHs,with good reproducibility(RSDs:2.5%-5.9%).Otherwise,C_(17)-C_(32) n-alkanes were nearly completely removed.The proposed method was critically compared with Solid Phase Micro Extraction(SPME)using a polyacrylate fiber.Both methods were successfully applied to the analysis of ambient PM2.5 samples collected at an urban polluted site.Between the two procedures,the MIP-SPE provided the highest recovery(R%≥93%)for PAHs with 5 and more benzene rings,but lower for lighter PAHs.In contrast,SPME showed a mean acceptable R%value(∼80%)for all the investigated PAHs,except for the heaviest PAHs in the most polluted samples(R%:110%-138%),suggesting an incomplete purification from the interfering n-hydrocarbons.

In vitro rumen fermentation of feed substrates added with chestnut tannins or an extract from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni

Rumen fermentation parameters and microbiota were evaluated in 3 in vitro rumen fermentation experiments after addition of chestnut tannins(CWT)or an extract from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni(SB)to substrates.A control(CTR)substrate was fermented alone or added with 1.5%of CWT or SB extracts in a batch culture system(Exp.1,fermentation in 500 mL for 24 h)and in a subsequent continuous culture system(Exp.2,fermentation in 2 L bottles for 9 d).Experiment 3 used the fermentation system of Exp.1 and tested 7 doses of each extract added to CTR(additions of 0.2%,0.4%,0.6%,0.8%,1.0%,1.2%and 1.4%for48 h).The addition of CWT lowered(P<0.01)the in vitro rumen ammonia concentration in all experiments and reduced the protozoa counts in Exp.1(P<0.05).In contrast,the SB extract did not modify the ammonia concentrations,but significantly lowered the protozoa counts in all 3 experiments(reduction of 47%and 20%in Exp.1 and 2,P<0.05;and a quadratic reduction in Exp.3,R^2=0.63,P<0.01).Neither extract affected the fermentation in terms of gas production(Exp.1 and 3)nor volatile fatty acids(VFA)yield(Exp.1 and 2),if we exclude a reduction at the highest CWT concentration in Exp.3.Changes in VFA profile were induced by CWT and were limited to reductions in the iso-valerate(P<0.01,in Exp.2)and iso-butyrate levels(P<0.01,Exp.2).The CWT increased the abundance of Prevotella ruminicola and Selenomonas ruminantium and decreased that of Ruminobacter amylophilus(P<0.01,P<0.05 and P<0.05,respectively).The SB extract increased the relative abundance of Treponema saccarophylum(P<0.05).Both of the studied substances had an impact on rumen metabolism,with SB reducing protozoa counts and CWT lowering the rumen ammonia concentration.The effects of both extracts on the rumen were appreciable at low dietary doses,and the negative impacts on fermentation were limited to the reduction in protein degradation with the addition of CWT.

Contemporary Chinese science fiction author and journalist Han Song's works often cross the lines dividing reality from imagination,science fiction from literary mainstream,technology from the supernatural.This article,focusing in particular on Han's novella"The Rebirth Bricks"(Zaisheng zhuan),aims to investigate the role played by the senses in a shift from the science fictional novum to the fictional"uncanny."Featuring technological bricks,haunted by sounds of the dead which are perceived through sight and hearing,this novella is analyzed from the standpoint of this perceptual complementarity which expresses Han Song's"science fictional re-enchantment,"a re-use of supernatural themes of the past that allow him to express the(technological)anomalies of China's current reality.

Brain regeneration from an evolutionary perspective:Brain regeneration(the full restoration of tissue after loss from injury or disease)is the most sought after goal for researchers working in developmental neurobiology.It also appears to be the most challenging to achieve when considering the mammalian brain.Whereas remarkable regenerative capacities can be present in the central nervous systems of many non-mammalian vertebrates(e.g.,fish,amphibians),these kinds of processes appear to be dramatically reduced in mammals(Bonfanti,2011).

粉末冶金工艺适用于从混溶间隙合金制备形态稳定的固−液相变材料。采用粉末冶金工艺能够获得低熔点活性相颗粒在高熔点惰性基体中分散良好的复合金属材料,防止相变过程中颗粒的离析,从而增加材料热稳定性。组合传统的粉末混合技术(简单混合和球磨)以改善Al−Sn合金的活性相离析和力学性能。事实上,球磨Sn粉可以减少其与Al粉的硬度差异,利用球磨将两种粉末混合会得到细小的显微组织,从而提高力学性能。此外,采用不同的组合方式混粉,热响应取决于显微组织,尤其是活性相颗粒的尺寸。更详细地说,粗大的活性相颗粒可提供快速放热与小的过冷,而小颗粒在大温度范围内凝固更慢。另一方面,活性相颗粒尺寸不会影响熔化和储热。因此,可以通过调控合金的显微组织来调控其热稳定性。

Arabidopsis FHY1 and FHY1-LIKE Are Not Required for Phytochrome A Signal Transduction in the Nucleus

Photoreceptors of the phytochrome family control a multitude of responses in plants.Phytochrome A(phyA)is essential for far-red light perception,which is important for germination and seedling establishment in strong canopy shade.Translocation of phyA from the cytosol into nucleus is a key step in farred light signaling and requires FAR-RED ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 1(FHY1)and FHY1-LIKE(FHL).FHY1/FHL bind to phyA downstream signaling components.Therefore,it has been suggested that FHY1/FHL also have a function in assembling phyA transcription factor complexes in the nucleus.Yet,in this study,we show that constitutively nuclear-localized phyA is active in the absence of FHY1 and FHL.Furthermore,an artificial FHY1,consisting of an SV40 NLS,a phyA binding site,and a YFP tag as spacer between them,complements the fhy1-3 fhl-1 double mutant.These findings show that FHY1 and FHL are not required for phyA downstream signaling in the nucleus.However,we found that lines expressing phyA-NLS-YFP are hypersensitive to red and far-red light and that slightly increased levels of constitutively nuclear-localized phyA result in photomorphogenic development in the dark.Thus,restricting phyA to the cytosol and inducing nuclear transport in light by interaction with FHY1/FHL might be important to suppress photomorphogenesis in the dark.
