Mesenchymal stromal cells(MsCs)have been extensively tested for the treatment of numerous clinical conditions and have demonstrated good safety but mixed *** this outcome can be attributed in part to the heterogeneity of cell preparations,the lack of mechanistic understanding and tools to establish cell pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics,as well as the poorly defined criteria for patient stratification,have hampered the design of informative clinical *** and others have demonstrated that MsCs can rapidly undergo apoptosis after their *** MSCs are phagocytosed by monocytes/macrophages that are then reprogrammed to become anti-inflammatory *** apoptosis occurs when the cells are injected into patients who harbor activated cytotoxic T or NK ***,the activation state of cytotoxic T or NK cells can be used as a biomarker to predict clinical responses to MsC *** on a large body of preexisting data,an alternative view on the mechanism of MSCs is that an inflammation-dependent MSC secretome is largely responsible for their immunomodulatory *** will discuss how these different mechanisms can coexist and are instructed by two different types of Msc"licensing":one that is cell-contact dependent and the second that is mediated by inflammatory *** varied and complex mechanisms by which MsCs can orchestrate inflammatory responses and how this function is specifically driven by inflammation support a physiological role for tissue stroma in tissue homeostasis,and it acts as a sensor of damage and initiator of tissue repair by reprogramming the inflammatory environment.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)has become the most frequent chronic liver disease in several developed and developing countries,affecting roughly 30%of adults in the general population,65-70%of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and,virtually,all patients with obesity(1).Of note,its prevalence is believed to rise dramatically over the next decade,along with an increase of prevalence in obesity,diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.

Numerical Model for the Characterization of Retro-reflective Materials Behavior in an Urban Street Canyon

In this work, a preliminary numerical model of the behavior of retro-reflective materials used as envelope coatings on street canyon buildings facades has been tested. Retro-reflective materials have a surface finish that allows to reflect the solar radiation back in the same direction of the incident radiation. In the last years this kind of materials has been studied as buildings envelope coating for their potentials in the reduction of the UHI effect. As a matter of fact, the angular dependence of their optical-radiative response would help to mitigate the phenomenon of radiative entrapment due to the urban fabric environment. For this reason, an urban canyon was selected as the most common urban architecture to perform the analysis. A virtual retroreflective material has been simulated considering its response as almost diffusive but in the same direction of the incident radiation. The assessment of the energy advantages of the adoption of a virtual retro-reflective material as envelope coating is investigated by means of a numerical model developed in MATLAB and based on the Gebhart factors theory. The final purpose of the numerical model is the evaluation of the surfaces solar loads by a comparison between perfectly diffusive materials and RR materials used as fa？ades coating.

In the Alpine Corsica(France),the Santa Lucia Nappe represents a peculiar unit preserving the unique relicts of Paleozoic lower to medium continental *** consists of composite basement affected by Permian granulite facies metamorphic conditions unconformably covered by a Late Cretaceous clastic sequence(Tomboni Conglomerate and Tralonca Flysch)affected by polyphase deformation and *** this work,we present a new reconstruction of the deformation events registered by the Tralonca Flysch during the Alpine *** D1 phase was testified by rare isoclinal *** D2 phase produced a continuous foliation and a map-scale sheath-fold with a top-to-W sense of *** D3 phase produced E-verging non-cylindrical folds and S3 crenulation cleavage that is not associated to metamorphic *** present the first temperature-pressure-deformation(P-T-d)path for the Tralonca Flysch,demonstrating that the Santa Lucia Nappe underwent accretion and then first stage exhumation in the Alpine wedge during the D1 phase with pressure and temperature peaks both occurred under blueschist metamorphic *** D2 phase occurred at lower pressure-temperature conditions during a second stage *** pressure-temperaturedeformation path is comparable with those of the Lower Units(i.e.,the subducted continental units of Alpine Corsica)suggesting a common geodynamic history.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is rarely associated with autoimmune paraneoplastic *** report a case of anti-transcriptional intermediary factor-1 gamma(TIF1-γ)-positive dermatomyositis(DM)as clinical presentation of HCC recurrence in a 72-year-old male patient admitted to our hospital due to fatigue,myalgia,and typical skin *** medical history was notable for hepatitis C-related cirrhosis,successful treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents,and previously efficacious treatment of *** testing showed significant rhabdomyolysis with antiTIF1-γantibodies at high titer,and DM was *** a careful diagnostic workup,HCC recurrence was *** first-line corticosteroid treatment,azathioprine and intravenous immunoglobulin treatments were administered;unfortunately,he mounted only partial *** to the compromised performance status,no HCC treatment was feasible,and,according to international guidelines,he received only best supportive ***,we discuss the diagnostic,prognostic,and pathogenic roles of anti-TIF1-γantibodies associated with paraneoplastic DM and the scant literature data on its occurrence in HCC *** the TIF1 gene family’s established role in oncogenesis,we also review the role of TIF1-γas a tumor-related neoantigen,leading to the development of clinically overt antiTIF1-γantibodies-positive DM.

Simultaneous removal of critical rare earth elements and chalcogen oxyanions by anaerobic granular sludge

Conventional mining of economically and strategically important critical rare earth elements(REEs)(such as neodymium,lanthanum and dysprosium),and chalcogens(such as selenium and tellurium)are associated with a huge economic and environmental ***,the need to recover REEs as well as chalcogens from different waste streams including wastewaters is becoming *** assays on synthetic chalcogen/REE-laden wastewater showed that the presence of REEs significantly improved the tellurite removal rate(>80%)and enhanced selenate removal by 66%±10%.Three 3.9 L continuous upflow anaerobic granular sludge bed(UASB)reactors were operated at a hydraulic retention time of 24 h and 30℃.Selenate reduction was achieved with a removal efficiency of~98% with an influent p H of 4.0 for more than 28 *** effect of REEs on tellurite removal in the UASB bioreactor could not be clearly established since a soluble tellurium removal efficiency of more than 98%was observed already before the addition of REEs at elevated tellurite *** complete REE removal in both batch assays and UASB reactors at higher pH(7.0±0.5)was attributed to precipitation,whereas chalcogen oxyanions removal was due to microbial ***,at acidic p H,biosorption was responsible for REE's removal,and the Se-enriched sludge exhibited a superior REE's removal efficiency than the non-enriched and Te-enriched sludge.

Emerging molecular targets and therapy for cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma(CCA) is a rare cancer arising from the biliary tree with a poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. Recent large scale molecular characterisation studies have identified recurrent genetic alterations in CCA which may be amenable to therapeutic targeting. In this review we explore the genomic landscape of CCA and examine results from trials of molecularly targeted agents and immunotherapy in this disease. Challenges in CCA diagnosis, treatment and trial design are discussed and we reflect on future directions which may lead to improved outcomes for CCA patients.
