BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pneumonia with severe septic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)are critical illnesses for patients following *** immunoglobulin(IVIG)plays a role in both immune support and inflammation control,especially in immunocompromised *** case report describes the first successful experience using IVIG and pulse steroids to manage this critical condition following lung *** SUMMARY A 65-year-old male patient reported a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and poor lung function and received bilateral sequential lung ***,he developed COVID-19 pneumonia,severe septic shock,and *** recovered from this critical condition after empirical antibiotics administration and veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation,in addition to IVIG and pulse *** IVIG is a valuable adjunct in managing severe sepsis in lung transplant recipients after COVID-19 *** aim,for the first time,to report the success of such a management approach for COVID-19 ARDS and sepsis in the post-lung transplant *** further investigations,this is a starting point for wider analysis of such an approach in this setting and consequently helps guide clinical practice for such a challenging patient population moving forward.

The effects of different submerged obstacle longitudinal bars with different arrangement densities on the flow profile and morphology of a scour hole were investigated under clear water conditions. Acoustic Doppler velocimetry(ADV) data were applied to plot the vertical distributions of three-dimensional velocities and turbulent *** experimental results indicate that arrangement density(also can represent porosity),structural material(flexible or solid),and the sidewall effect are the main factors impacting turbulent kinetic energy and the morphology of scour *** flexible vegetation,the maximum turbulent kinetic energy near the bed surface increased with the arrangement *** the same structure,the depth and the magnitude of the lateral expansion of the scour hole also increased with the arrangement *** flexible vegetation reduced the depth of the scour hole because of deflection and arrangement *** larger volumes of scour found in the upstream and middle sections of solid structures compare well to those in flexible *** deflection of porous flexible vegetation transported the turbulent kinetic energy downstream,reduced the turbulent kinetic energy near the sediment bed,and increased the stability of the *** vegetation bars are able to protect the bank and the bed of a river under normal conditions,making them a good alternative design in the management and restoration of rivers.

BACKGROUND Insulin resistance,lipotoxicity,and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLD).Mitochondrial dysfunction impairs oxidative phosphorylation and increases reactive oxygen species production,leading to steatohepatitis and hepatic *** intelligence(AI)is a potent tool for disease diagnosis and risk *** To investigate mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms in susceptibility to MASLD and establish an AI model for MASLD *** Multiplex polymerase chain reaction was performed to comprehensively genotype 82 mitochondrial DNA variants in the screening dataset(n=264).The significant mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphism was validated in an independent cohort(n=1046)using the Taqman®allelic discrimination *** forest,eXtreme gradient boosting,Naive Bayes,and logistic regression algorithms were employed to construct an AI model for *** In the screening dataset,only mt12361A>G was significantly associated with ***12361A>G showed borderline significance in MASLD patients with 2-3 cardiometabolic traits compared with controls in the validation dataset(P=0.055).Multivariate regression analysis confirmed that mt12361A>G was an independent risk factor of MASLD[odds ratio(OR)=2.54,95%confidence interval(CI):1.19-5.43,P=0.016].The genetic effect of mt12361A>G was significant in the non-diabetic group but not in the diabetic ***12361G carriers had a 2.8-fold higher risk than A carriers in the non-diabetic group(OR=2.80,95%CI:1.22-6.41,P=0.015).By integrating clinical features and mt12361A>G,random forest outperformed other algorithms in detecting MASLD[training area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC)=1.000,validation AUROC=0.876].CONCLUSION The mt12361A>G variant increased the severity of MASLD in non-diabetic *** supports the screening and management of MASLD in primary care settings.

Objective:To identify the febrile characteristics and clinical presentations associated with fatality in hospitalized adult patients with dengue virus(DENV)***:A total of 289 adult hospitalized patients with laboratoryconfirmed DENV infections were examined,of which 22 were fatal and 267 were non-fatal.A comparison of the clinical and laboratory characteristics was retrospectively conducted of the deceased and surviving *** logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed to identify predictors of ***:Fatal patients exhibited significantly more comorbidities,particularly renal and cardiac comorbidities,and they were,in general,older than control individuals(P<0.0001).The results of logistic regression analysis showed that febrile duration of less than four days before arriving in the Emergency Department(OR=5.34;95%CI:1.39–20.6),episode of hypotension in the Emergency Department(OR=6.95;95%CI:2.40–20.1),and comorbidity with congestive heart failure(OR=11.26;95%CI:2.31–54.79)were all significantly associated with inpatient fatality due to DENV *** ROC curve analysis indicated that the final prognostic model yielded an area under the curve of 0.87(95%CI:0.79–0.97)for ***:The aforementioned clinical findings may help clinicians predict fatality among adult inpatients with DENV infection.

Exercise inevitably induces damages and triggers a brief inflammation in challenged tissues of the human ***,regular exercise is associated with improved physical fitness and lower all-cause mortality among adults in a dose-dependent *** paradox between destructive nature of exercise and its anti-aging benefit can be best explained by decreasing aged cell population of the human body in a Darwinian natural selection fashion,resulting in tissue *** this concept,the unfit-to-fit cell ratio of a multicellular system increases during growth(expansion of cell population and size)and decreases after exercise *** serves as an innate mechanism to recognize cells in danger and triggers clearance mechanism to eliminate unhealthy cells followed by regeneration.A recent finding of decreased p16INK4a+senescent cells together with CD68+macrophage infiltration in human skeletal muscle after resistance exercise supports this *** senescent cells are mostly stem cells located in capillaries surrounding myofibers,functioning to replace short-lived endothelial *** can be found in young men aged 20-25 *** this context,exercise controls weight gain(*** number and size)and decrease senescent cell proportion in capillaries of the human body,providing benefits in physical fitness and increasing life expectancy.

Isometric projection （IsoProjection） is a linear dimensionality reduction method, which explicitly takes into account the manifold structure embedded in the data. However, IsoProjection is non-orthogonal, which makes it extremely sensitive to the dimensions of reduced space and difficult to estimate the intrinsic dimensionality. The non-ortbogonality also distorts the metric structure embedded in the data. This paper proposes a new method called orthogonal isometric projection （O-IsoProjection）, which shares the same linear character as IsoProjection and overcomes the metric distortion problem of IsoProjection. Similar to IsoProjection, O-lsoProjection firstly constructs an adjacency graph which can reflect the manifold structure embedded in the data and the class relationship between the sample points of face space, and then obtains the projections by preserving such a graph structure. Different from IsoProjection, O-IsoProjection requires the basis vectors to be orthogonal, and the orthogonal basis vectors can be calculated by iterative way. Experimental results on ORL and Yale databases show that O-lsoProjection has better recognition rate for face recognition than Eigenface, Fisherface and IsoProjection.

Understanding the defense mechanisms of the host of an organism is important for infection *** previous studies,we demonstrated that interferon-a(IFN-a),but not IL-12,was produced by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells infected with varicella-zoster virus(VZV).Here,we investigated what kind of cell(s)and which signal molecule(s)are involved in IFN-a *** cell isolation and ELISA,we found that plasmacytoid dendritic cells(pDCs)were responsible for IFN-a production during VZV *** also found that Toll-like receptor 9(TLR9)was involved in VZV-induced IFN-a production because inhibitory CpG oligodeoxynucleotide inhibited IFN-a ***-inactivated VZV-induced IFN-a production was lower than that of active VZV,indicating another TLR9-independent *** studies demonstrated that double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase,but not DNA-dependent protein kinase was involved in VZV-induced IFN-a ***,these results suggest that pDCs play an important role in IFN-a production during VZV infection through TLR9-dependent and-independent pathways.

Compounds in the atmosphere contaminate samples of groundwater. An inexpensive and simple method for collecting groundwater samples is developed to prevent contamination when the background concentration of contaminants is high. This new design of groundwater sampling device involves a glass sampling bottle with a Teflon-lined valve at each end. A cleaned and dried sampling bottle was connected to a low flow-rate peristaltic pump with Teflon tubing and was filled with water. No headspace volume was remained in the sampling bottle. The sample bottle was then packed in a PVC bag to prevent the target component from infiltrating into the water sample through the valves. In this study, groundwater was sampled at six wells using both the conventional method and the improved method. The analysis of trichlorofluoromethane（ CFC-11 ） concentrations at these six wells indicates that all the groundwater samples obtained by the conventional sampling method were contaminated by CFC-11 from the atmosphere. The improved sampling method greatly eliminated the problems of contamination, preservation and quantitative analysis of natural water.

Optimizing SUS 304 wire drawing process by grey relational analysis utilizing Taguchi method

In the stainless steel 304 （SUS 304） wire drawing process, optimizing the die life and wire tensile strength, which are the larger-the-better quality characteristics （QCH） types, is of main interest. Three control factors, involving reduction ratio, lubricant temperature, and drawing speed, were investigated utilizing L9（34） orthogonal array （OA）. The grey relational analysis was conducted for the normalized signal-to-noise （S/N） ratios. The ordinal value of the grey grade was then used to decide optimal factor levels. The anticipated improvements in die life and wire tensile strength were estimated 25.31 h and 22.50 kg/mm2, respectively. To decide the significant factor which had effect on each QCH and predict the average value of each QCH, analysis of variance （ANOVA） was performed for S/N ratio and QCH. Confirmation experiments were then conducted, where a good overlap was noticed between the predicted and confirnation intervals for each QCH. The Hotelling T2 and the sample generalized variance control charts were finally utilized in controlling and monitoring future production. In conclusion, the grey relational analysis utilizing Taguchi method is an effective approach for optimizing the die life and wire tensile strength for SUS wire drawing process. 2008 University of Science and Technology Beijing.
