Introduction: To assess the changes in glycemic control after initiating or switching to a basal insulin analogue in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A retrospective, observational analysis was conducted using electronic data from a Hong Kong regional hospital. Data from adult patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM, respectively) who had been prescribed with basal insulin glargine in 2008-2010, with recorded HbA1c levels at the time of initiation, at 6 and 12 months thereafter, were analysed. Results: Data from 106 eligible patients were analysed. Substantial reduction in HbA1c and fasting sugar levels were reported in both T1DM (Δ HbA1c = 1.5%, Δ FBG = 1.3 mmol/L p chieved HbA1c levels chieved a statistically greater HbA1c reduction (Δ = 1.7%) than those who previous treated with premixed or basal bolus insulin (Δ = 0.3%) (p < 0.05). Percentage of patients experiencing hypoglycaemia reduced from 69% to 62% in T1DM but increased from 26% to 36% in T2DM patients. All hypoglycaemic episodes recorded were either asymptomatic or mild and self-limiting. Only 4% of the patients discontinued treatment at the end of 12 months. Conclusions: In real life clinical practice, a single daily basal insulin analogue therapy provided effective glycemic control with an acceptable risk of mild hypoglycaemia.

A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

Forecasting wind structure of tropical cyclone(TC)is vital in assessment of impact due to high winds using Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP)*** usual verification technique on TC wind structure forecasts are based on grid-to-grid comparisons between forecast field and the actual ***,precision of traditional verification measures is easily affected by small scale errors and thus cannot well discriminate the accuracy or effectiveness of NWP model *** this study,the Method for Object-Based Diagnostic Evaluation(MODE),which has been widely adopted in verifying precipitation fields,is utilized in TC’s wind field verification for the first *** TC wind field forecast of deterministic NWP model and Ensemble Prediction System(EPS)of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)over the western North Pacific and the South china Sea in 2020 were evaluated.A MODE score of 0.5 is used as a threshold value to represent a skillful(or good)*** is found that the R34(radius of 34 knots)wind field structure forecasts within 72 h are good regardless of DET or *** performance of R50 and R64 is slightly worse but the R50 forecasts within 48 h remain good,with MODE exceeded *** R64forecast within 48 h are worth for reference as well with MODE of around *** study states that the TC wind field structure forecast by ECMWF is skillful for TCs over the western North Pacific and the South china Sea.

Clean label food is a rising consumer trend in the food *** protein concentrate(MPC)and reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate(RCMPC)could serve as natural emulsifiers and increase the total protein content of ice cream *** objectives of this study were to determine and compare the effects of MPC and RCMPC on ice cream composition,mix viscosity,storage stability,meltdown rate,and texture.A base formulation with 3%non-fat dry milk(NFDM)and no added emulsifiers was set as the *** levels of MPC or RCMPC(each powder containing 85%protein)at 1%,2%,and 3%were incorporated by replacing equivalent amounts of NFDM and keeping other ingredients *** ice cream treatments were processed with a target overrun of 70%and hardened at−25℃in a blast *** of MPC or RCMPC at 1%,2%,and 3%corresponded to increases in protein content of ice cream by 15%,30%,and 45%,*** viscosity of the ice-cream mix increased with increasing levels of MPC or *** general,higher protein samples had slower meltdown rate and higher values of hardness and adhesiveness,but the trends were *** shrinkage in volume was observed in any ice cream stored at−25℃after 180 ***,an additional storage stability study revealed that the control showed significant shrinkage after 60 days(−6.5%±1.5%),90 days(−7.1%±1.8%),and 180 days(−7.9%±1.1%)in a typical household-style freezer at−13℃.MPC at 1%also showed significant shrinkage after 180 days,while samples with RCMPC at any levels showed no shrinkage at *** cream manufacturers may consider MPC and RCMPC natural alternatives to synthetic emulsifiers,with RCMPC being more effective than MPC in terms of ice cream storage stability.

Background: Departure decisions and behaviors of migratory birds at stopover sites are expected to maximize fit?ness by trade?offs among avoiding predators, optimizing refueling(energy) capacity, and matching other life?history events. We predict that species with different body sizes and migratory destinations will exhibit different behaviors when departing from the same stopover site. We also predict that with strong time constraint at the final pre?breed?ing stopover site, departure decisions may be less sensitive to exogenous factors, such as wind condition, compared to other stopover or nonbreeding ***: We recorded migratory departures of four shorebird species, i.e. Eurasian Curlew(Numenius arquata), Bar?tailed Godwit(Limosa lapponica), Great Knot(Calidris tenuirostris), and Grey Plover(Pluvialis squatarola), at Yaluji?ang Estuary Wetlands in china, a final pre?breeding stopover site in the northern Yellow Sea, from 2011 to 2014. We compared flock sizes, departure time and departure directions between species, and investigated the effects of tide and weather conditions(rain and ground wind speed and direction) on the departure decision of ***: We found that larger species departed in smaller flocks and were more variable in daily departure time. Departure trajectory of all four species appeared to be influenced by coastal topography. With the east–west coast?line and intertidal mudflat on the south, birds exhibited westward or eastward deflection from the shortest migra?tory routes. Bar?tailed Godwit was the only species that deviated to the southeast and did not climb over the land. In this Letter, we present a high-speed volumetric imaging system based on structured illumination and an electrically tunable lens（ETL）, where the ETL performs fast axial scanning at hundreds of Hz. In the system,a digital micro-mirror device（DMD） is utilized to rapidly generate structured images at the focal plane in synchronization with the axial scanning unit. The scanning characteristics of the ETL are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Imaging experiments on pollen samples are performed to verify the optical cross-sectioning and fast axial scanning capabilities. The results show that our system can perform fast axial scanning and threedimensional（3D） imaging when paired with a high-speed camera, presenting an economic solution for advanced biological imaging applications.
