The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPARδ)agonists are reported to improve insulin sensitivity,reduce glucose levels,and alleviate dysfunctional lipid metabolism in animal models of type 2 diabetes ***,the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely *** plays an essential role in the biological *** of metabolic changes in response to disease conditions or drug treatment is critical for better understanding of the pathophysiological *** this study,metabolic profiling analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry integrated with targeted analysis by liquid chro matography-mass spectrometry was carried out in plasma samples of db/db diabetic mice after six-week treatment of PPARδagonist ***501516 treatment significantly altered levels of metabolites,such as branched-chain amino acids(BCAAs),BCAA metabolites(3-hydroxyisobutyric acid and 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid),long-chain fatty acids,uric acid and ketone bodies(3-hydroxybutyric acid and 2-hydroxybutyric acid)which are all associated with the impaired systemic insulin *** pre sent results indicate the beneficial effect of PPARδagonist in alleviating insulin resistance of diabetic mice by favorably modulating metabolic profile,thus providing valuable information in understanding the therapeutic potential of PPARδagonists in correcting metabolic dysfunction in diabetes.

Background:Segment coordination variability(CV)is a movement pattern associated with running-related *** can also be adversely affected by a prolonged ***,research on this topic is currently *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a prolonged run on segment CV and vertical loading rates during a treadmill half ***:Fifteen healthy runners ran a half marathon on an instrumental treadmill in a biomechanical *** kinematic and kinetic data were collected every 2 km(from 2 km until 20 km),and the data were processed by musculoskeletal *** CVs were computed from the angle-angle plots of selected pelvis-thigh,thigh-shank,and shank-rearfoot couplings using a modified vector coding *** loading rate of vertical ground reaction force was also calculated.A one-way MANOVA with repeated measures was performed on each of the outcome variables to examine the main effect of running ***:Significant effects of running mileage were found on segment CVs(p≤0.010)but not on loading rate(p=0.881).Notably,during the early stance phase,the CV of pelvis frontal thigh frontal was significantly increased at 20 km compared with the CV at 8 km(g=0.59,p=0.022).The CV of shank transverse *** frontal decreased from 2 km to 8 km(g=0.30,p=0.020)but then significantly increased at both 18 km(g=0.05,p<0.001)and 20 km(g=0.36,p<0.001).Conclusion:At the early stance,runners maintained stable CVs on the sagittal plane,which could explain the unchanged loading rate throughout the half ***,increased CVs on the frontal/transverse plane may be an early sign of fatigue and indicative of possible injury *** studies are necessary for conclusive statements in this regard.

Background Colorectal surgery was regarded as one of the high risk surgery for post-operative deep vein thrombosis （DVT） and pulmonary embolism. This study aimed at investigating the incidence of venous thromboembolism （VTE） after colorectal surgery for *** Data were collected from the prospective database of colorectal malignancy from 2000 to 2008. A total of 1421 colorectal （open and laparoscopic） operations were performed for the colorectal malignancy without DVT *** Only seven patients （0.5%） developed symptomatic DVT and one of them had complication of pulmonary embolism without mortality. Open operation for colorectal malignancy was identified as possible risk factor of DVT,however, risk factors like operative time, low anterior resection, sex, age etc. were not *** Risk of venous thromboembolism after colorectal operation is low in chinese of our locality and it might be safe to perform colorectal operation for malignancy without DVT prophylaxis.

Interests in charcoal usage have recently been re-ignited because it is believed that charcoal is a muchbetter fuel than wood. The conventional charcoal production consumes a large amount of energy due to the prolonged heating time and cooling time which contribute to the process completing in one to several days. Wood py-rolysis consists of both endothermic and exothermic reactions as well as the decomposition of the different components at different temperature range （hemicellulose： 200-260℃; cellulose： 240-350℃ and lignin： 280-500℃）. Inthis study we propose a multistagepyrolysis which is an approach to carry out pyrolysis with multiple heating stages so as to gain certain processing benefits. We propose a three-stage approach which includes rapid stepwise heating stage to a variable target temperatures of 250 ℃, 300℃, 350 ℃ and 400 ℃, slow and gradual heatingstage to a tinal temperature of 400℃ and adiabatic with cooling stage. The multi-stage pyrolysis process can save 30% energy and the processing time by using a first temperature target of 300 ℃and heating rate of 5℃.min-1 to produce a fixed-carbon yield of 25.73% as opposed to the base case with a fixed-carbon yield of23.18%.

The analysis on the feedstock pyrolysis characteristic and the impacts of process parameters on pyrolysis outcomes can assist in the designing,operating and optimizing pyrolysis *** work aims to utilize both experimental and modelling approaches to perform the analysis on three biomass feedstocks—wood sawdust,bamboo shred and Jatropha Curcas seed cake residue,and to provide insights for the design and operation of pyrolysis *** the experimental part,the study investigated the effect of heating rate,final pyrolysis temperature and sample size on pyrolysis using common thermal analysis *** the modelling part,a transient mathematical model that integrates the feedstock characteristic from the experimental study was used to simulate the pyrolysis progress of selected biomass feedstock particles for reactor *** model composes of several sub-models that describe pyrolysis kinetic and heat flow,particle heat transfer,particle shrinking and reactor *** better understanding of the effects of process conditions and feedstock characteristics on pyrolysis through both experimental and modelling studies,this work discusses on the considerations of and interrelation between feedstock size,pyrolysis energy usage,processing time and product quality for the design and operation of pyrolysis processes.

Incidence and Risk Factors of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries after Various Modes of Vaginal Deliveries in chinese Women

Background： Obstetric anal sphincter injuries （OASIS） can cause an adverse impact on women＇s physical and mental health. There was lack of published data in chinese population particularly on studying the risk of OASIS for nonrotational outlet forceps. This study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of OASIS. Methods： This is a retrospective cohort study carried out in a tertiary referral hospital in Hong Kong. The control group was selected randomly. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of potential risk factors on OASIS. This study reviewed the obstetric records of OASIS women and random control from January 2011 to June 2014. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of potential risk factors on OASIS. Results： Of 15,446 women delivered, 49 had OASIS. The percentage of OASIS increased from 0.3% （2011） to 0.38% （2014）. There was an increasing trend of OASIS in attempted spontaneous vaginal delivery without episiotorny （P 〈 0.01）~ but it did not increase the OASIS risk （P = 0.46）. Univariate analysis of 49 cases and 438 control subjects showed that forceps delivery （odds ratio [OR] -8.73, P 〈 0.01 ）, prolong second stage of labor （OR = 1.43, P 〈 0.01） increased the risk lbr OASIS. In multivariate regression models, only lbrceps delivery （OR = 6.28, P 〈 0.01） proved to be independent risk factor. Conclusions： The incidence of OASIS in chinese women was increased alter 2012, but still lower than the reported figures in the literature. Outlet forceps delivery could be a possible associated risk factor.

Background Morbidity and mortality of advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection （HIV） have declined in Western industrialized countries since the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy （HAART）. It is unclear if this has also happened in Hong Kong. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of patients with advanced HIV disease in Hong Kong, china. First, the mortality of advanced HIV disease per year was calculated for the decade 1993 to 2002, both annually and according to patient observation before and after 1997. Second, the event rates were estimated for the clinical end points of acquired immune deficiency syndrome （AIDS） and death. Univariate and multivariate analyses were then performed to identify associated factors. Results The crude mortality of advanced HIV disease declined from 10. 8 - 30. 4 per 100 patients during 1993 - 1996, to 0. 8 - 6. 9 per 100 patients during 1997 - 2002. A rate ratio of 4. 04 （95% CI, 2. 52 - 6. 47） was evident for those observed in 1993 - 1996, compared to those in 1997 - 2002. In a multivariate analysis where calendar period was adjusted, use of＇highly active antiretroviral therapy was associated with rate ratios of 0. 13 （95% CI, 0. 05 -0. 33） for death after AIDS, 0. 08 （95% CI, 0. 04 -0. 19） for AIDS after a CD4 cell count 〈200/μ1, and 0.21 （95% CI, 0.07 -0.67） for death after CD4 cell count 〈200/μl. In the same analysis, calendar period ceased to be a significant factor after adjustment for use of HAART. Conclusions The mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease have declined in Hong Kong. This improved prognosis was attributable to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Current fire retardants are known to be toxic to humans and our *** environmental-friendly flame retardants(FRs),protein-based flame retardants have been studied extensively recently,even though they are not *** this study,we designed,synthesized and tested a durable protein-based FR through the fusion of the adhesion domain from either mussel foot protein-5(mfp-5)or cellulose-binding domain(CBD)with flame retardant protein(SR protein and alpha casein).We first verified the expression of the recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli using Western ***,we coated the fusion protein(carrying cell lysates)to cotton fabrics and wood and verified with Infrared(IR)*** a vertical burning test and wood flammability test,we confirmed the flame retardancy of the materials after the protein *** the vertical burning test,the SR protein and alpha casein flame retardant proteins with the CBD adhesion domain showed a 50.0%and 43.3%increase in flame *** data is also consistent in the wood flame retardancy *** imaging experiments also suggested these new fire retardants can be preserved on the materials well even after ***,our results showed that flame-retardant proteins with adhesion domains are high potential candidates of green alternative flame retardants.
