AIM： To assess the incidence of and risk factors for gallstone disease （GSD） among type 2 diabetics in Kinmen, Taiwan. METHODS： A screening program for GSD was performed by two specialists who employed real-time abdominal ultrasound to examine the abdominal region after patients had fasted for at least eight hours. Screening, which was conducted in 2001, involved 848 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After exclusion of 63 subjects with prevalent GSD, 377 participants without GSD were invited in 2002 for a second round of screening. A total of 281 （74.5%） subjects were re-examined. RESULTS： Among the 281 type 2 diabetics who had no GSD at the first screening, 10 had developed GSD by 2002. The incidence was 3.56% per year （95%CI： 1.78% per year-6.24% per year）. Using a Cox regression model, age （RR = 1.07, 95% CI： 1.00-1.14）, waist circumference （RR = 1.12, 95% CI： 1.01-1.29）, and ALT （RR = 1.13, 95%CI： 1.01-1.26） appeared to be significantly correlated with development of GSD. CONCLUSION： Older age is a known risk factor for the development of GSD. Our study shows that greater waist circumference and elevated ALT levels are also associated with the development of GSD among type 2 diabetics in Kinmen.

Metabolic syndrome(MetS)is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities related to central adiposity and insulin *** importance is increasingly recognized as it associates with increased risks of metabolic and cardiovascular *** metabolic aberrations of MetS may lead to development of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)and lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)in men.A 26.5%-55.6% prevalence of MetS in men with LUTS was reported in worldwide *** the exact biological pathway is not clear yet,insulin resistance,increased visceral adiposity,sex hormone alterations and cellular inflammatory reactions played significant roles in the related pathophysiological *** should recognize the cardiovascular and metabolic impacts of MetS in men with LUTS,early risk factors optimization and use of appropriate medical therapy may possibly alter or slower the progression of LUTS/BPH,and potentially avoid unnecessary morbidities and mortalities from cardiovascular and metabolic diseases for those men.

The paper presents the research for the purpose of selecting microorganisms into the production process of ＂chao＂ to improve the quality of ＂chao＂ products and ensure food safety. Several analytical methods such as determination of formal nitrogen, determination of the protease hydrolysis activity, sensory evaluation method, experimental procedure, methods of analysis and processing of empirical data were used in this study. The findings showed that two out of four selected microorganism strains （one strain of fungi and three strains of bacteria denoted NM1, VK1, VK2, VK3, respectively） were the most appropriate for the cooperation among them and the production of %hao＂, which were coded NM1 and VK1. The suitable mixing proportion of strains of NM1 and VK1 was determined at 1：1.25, compatible with the 1：100 ratio of the varieties of microorganisms （in powder form） to tofu.

Based on the lightning monitoring and FY4A satellite data in 12 periods during a thunderstorm,the relationship between lightning activity and four satellite digital products:blackbody radiation brightness temperature(TBB),cloud top temperature(CTT),cloud top height(CTH)and cloud top pressure(CTP)was quantitatively *** following conclusions were obtained:(1)at lightning location,90.5%of TBB values were less than 214.1 K;88.5%of CTT values were less than 207.7 K;88.5%of CTP values were less than 137.7 hPa,and 88.5%of CTH values were greater than 14872 *** location without lightning,92.5%of TBB values were greater than 214.1 K;90.4%of CTT values were greater than 207.7 K;89%of CTP values were greater than 137.7 hPa,and 92%of CTH values were less than 14872 m.(2)Lightning activity was concentrated in the cloud area with TBB between 190-210 K,CTT between 185-210 K,CTP between 50-150 hPa and CTH between 12-18 *** intensity was roughly positively correlated with TBB,CTT and CTP,and negatively correlated with *** the increase of CTH,lightning intensity decreased.(3)TBB,CTT,CTP and CTH can well indicate the location and activity frequency of lightning in thunderstorm weather.

光学技术在生物医学中扮演着越来越重要的角色,其非电离辐射、高分辨率、高对比度和对生物组织异变高度灵敏等特性使其非常适用于生物组织的研究,包括成像、传感、治疗、刺激以及控制等。然而由于光折射因子在生物组织中的分布是不均匀的,光在生物组织中的传播会受到很强的散射影响,故纯光学技术的穿透深度和空间分辨率是“鱼和熊掌不可兼得”;高分辨率光学成像应用仅限于样品浅表层,当成像深度增加时分辨率急剧下降。实现光在深层生物组织里的高分辨率成像或应用是人们期盼已久的目标。近年来,为解决这一问题,研究者提出了不同的方法,例如切换到更长的光波长以减小组织散射系数,在信号检测时将漫射光转换为散射不明显的超声信号,逆转或者预先补偿由光的多次散射所带来的相位畸变,或借助光纤等微创光学通道实现深层生物组织的高分辨率光学成像、刺激等。基于团队在深层生物组织光学相关领域多年的耕耘,从光在生物组织中的传播特性出发,梳理和总结了近年来研究人员在光-声结合和光学波前整形技术等方面展开的诸多探索,以及在生物组织操控、成像、光学计算以及人工智能等领域中的应用尝试。虽然尚有诸多不足,但随着硬件设备的更新和计算技术的发展,在不远的将来有望实现活体深层生物组织光学高分辨率应用。在这一求索过程中,新方法和新能力将不断激发新的应用灵感,为光学尤其是生物医学光子学带来全新的理念和机遇。

Spatial Variation of the Characteristics of Urban Heat Island Effect in Hong Kong

Recent studies by the Hong Kong Observatory show that the urban centre of Hong Kong has considerable Urban Heat Island （UHI） effect that arises from the different thermal properties between urban and the surrounding rural areas. The studies have also shown that the urban-rural temperature difference or UHI intensity in the urban centre of Hong Kong can be greater than 10℃. However, the characteristics of UHI in Hong Kong would not be unique were it not for its complex topography and the significant spatial variation in the degree of urbanization within the territory. Making use of the extensive spatial coverage of the automatic weather stations operated by the Observatory, this study attempts to document the spatial variation of the characteristics of UHI effect in Hong Kong in summer and winter through cases studies. Cases in summer and winter with meteorological conditions typical for high UHI effect （that is, clear sky, light wind and stable atmospheric condition） are selected for the study. The characteristics of UHI effect in terms of the daytime warming rates, nocturnal cooling rates and diurnal temperature ranges at the selected automatic weather stations are analysed. The territory of Hong Kong is then classified into different categories according to the identified characteristics with a view to portraying the spatial morphology of UHI effect in Hong Kong.
