Beneficial horticultural responses from the application of solar thermotherapy to mature Huanglongbing-affected citrus trees

The detrimental effects of Huanglongbing(HLB)on citrus are well known and so is the need for effective methods to combat this *** thermotherapy(ST),one of the management methods to help alleviate some of the negative effects of HLB,is the process of heating trees to therapeutic temperatures by encompassing the tree within a plastic structure(Visqueen)to harness the sun’s natural *** was applied to mature‘Valencia’citrus trees in three *** vigor,yield,and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus(Las)titer in leaves were monitored for two consecutive seasons post ST treatment,while fruit and juice quality were evaluated at the end of the second *** promoted an increase in canopy density in most groves tested and did not have a significant effect on fruit quantity,despite the prolonged exposure of the trees to increased ***,Las titer was reduced in both leaves and juice processed from affected trees post *** respect to fruit quality,the ratio of total soluble solids to titratable acidity was higher post ST compared to controls as was the sucrose content of the juice in most treated groves,whereas limonin was higher in juice from control *** components analysis of aroma volatiles showed significant differences between juice from treated versus control trees with volatiles imparting top-note and freshness to orange juice,such as acetaldehyde,hexanal,Z-3-hexenol and linalool,being higher in juice fromtreated *** panels confirmed that flavor differences existed,ultimately showing that ST resulted in improved juice flavor in well-managed *** the effects of ST on the trees appear temporary,such outcomes emphasize its utility when used as part of an integrated management strategy for HLB-affected citrus,imparting beneficial horticultural responses with minimal to positive effects on subsequent juice flavor.

Associations between maternal vitamin D status and porcine litter characteristics throughout gestation

Emerging evidence suggests an important role of vitamin D in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy,and the regulation of foetal growth across mammalian ***,the temporal changes in maternal vitamin D sta-tus throughout gestation in the pig and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and litter characteristics of interest across gestation remain poorly understood and *** abundance of 25(OH)D in maternal plasma was quantified by HPLC–mS/mS at gestational days(GD)18,30,45,60 and 90(n=5–11 gilts/GD).maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations significantly increased between GD18 and GD30(Pmaternal vitamin D metabolite concentrations and litter characteristics of interest including gilt weight,ovulation rate,mean litter weight,number of live foetuses,percentage prenatal survival,and sex ratio of the litter was *** 25(OH)D(P=0.059)concentrations tended to be positively associated with percentage prenatal survival on *** GD90,maternal 25(OH)D(Pma 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with the percentage of male foetuses in the litter on GD90(Pmporal changes in maternal vitamin D status throughout ges-tation and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and the economically important litter characteristics of gilt weight,percentage prenatal survival and percentage of male foetuses in the *** the understanding of the role of vitamin D across important developmental timepoints in relation to foetal growth is essential to improve reproductive success in livestock species.

The concept of Digital Earth(DE)was formalized by Al Gore in *** that time the technologies needed for its implementation were in an embryonic stage and the concept was quite *** then digital technologies have progressed significantly and their speed and pervasiveness have generated and are still causing the digital transformation of our *** creates new opportunities and challenges for the realization of DE.‘What is DE today?’,‘What could DE be in the future?’,and‘What is needed to make DE a reality?’.To answer these questions it is necessary to examine DE considering all the technological,scientific,social,and economic aspects,but also bearing in mind the principles that inspired its *** understanding the lessons learned from the past,it becomes possible to identify the remaining scientific and technological challenges,and the actions needed to achieve the ultimate goal of a‘Digital Earth for all’.This article reviews the evolution of the DE vision and its multiple definitions,illustrates what has been achieved so far,explains the impact of digital transformation,illustrates the new vision,and concludes with possible future scenarios and recommended actions to facilitate full DE implementation.

molecular mechanisms behind the accumulation of ATP and H_(2)O_(2) in citrus plants in response to‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’infection

Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus(Las)is a fastidious,phloem-restricted pathogen with a significantly reduced genome,and attacks all citrus species with no immune cultivars documented to *** other plant bacterial pathogens,Las deploys effector proteins into the organelles of plant cells,such as mitochondria and chloroplasts to manipulate host immunity and *** organelles are responsible for the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate(ATP)and have a critical role in plant immune signaling during hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)*** this study,we investigated H2O2 and ATP accumulation in relation to citrus huanglongbing(HLB)in addition to revealing the expression profiles of genes critical for the production and detoxification of H2O2 and ATP *** also found that as ATP and H2O2 concentrations increased in the leaf,so did the severity of the HLB symptoms,a trend that remained consistent among the four different citrus varieties ***,the upregulation of ATP synthase,a key enzyme for energy conversion,may contribute to the accumulation of ATP in infected tissues,whereas downregulation of the H2O2 detoxification system may cause oxidative damage to plant macromolecules and cell *** may explain the cause of some of the HLB symptoms such as chlorosis or leaf *** findings in this study highlight important molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the host plants’response to Las infection and provide new targets for interrupting the disease cycle.

Rapid screening for citrus canker resistance employing pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity responses

Citrus canker,caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas citri ***(Xcc),has been attributed to millions of dollars in loss or damage to commercial citrus crops in subtropical production areas of the *** identification of resistant plants is one of the most effective methods of disease management,the ability to screen for resistant seedlings plays a key role in the production of a long-term solution to ***,an inverse correlation between reactive oxygen species(ROS)production by the plant and the ability of Xcc to grow and form lesions on infected plants is *** on this information,a novel screening method that can rapidly identify citrus seedlings that are less susceptible to early infection by Xcc was devised by measuring ROS accumulation triggered by a 22-amino acid sequence of the conserved N-terminal part of flagellin(flg22)from *** ***(Xcc-flg22).In addition to limiting disease symptoms,ROS production was also correlated with the expression of basal defense-related genes such as the pattern recognition receptors LRR8 and FLS2,the leucine-rich repeat receptor-like protein RLP12,and the defense-related gene PR1,indicating an important role for pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity(PTI)in determining resistance to citrus ***,the differential expression patterns observed amongst the citrus seedlings demonstrated the existence of genetic variations in the PTI response among citrus species/varieties.

Selenium supplementation in a population with low basal blood selenium levels has been reported to decrease theincidence of several cancers including prostate *** on the clinical findings,it is likely that the antioxidantfunction of one or more selenoproteins is responsible for the chemopreventive effect,although low molecular weightseleno-compounds have also been posited to selectively induce apoptosis in transformed *** address the effects ofselenium supplementation on selenoprotein expression in prostate cells,we have undertaken an analysis of antioxidantselenoprotein expression as well as selenium toxicity in non-tumorigenic prostate epithelial cells(RWPE-1)and prostatecancer cells(LNCaP and PC-3).Our results show that two of the glutathione peroxidase family members(GPX1 andGPX4)are highly induced by supplemental selenium in prostate cancer cells but only slightly induced in RWPE-1 *** addition,GPX1 levels are dramatically lower in PC-3 cells as compared to RWPE-1 or LNCaP ***2 proteinand mRNA,however,are only detectable in RWPE-1 *** the three selenium compounds tested(sodium selenite,sodium selenate and selenomethionine),only sodium selenite shows toxicity in a physiological range of *** and in contrast to previous studies,RWPE-1 cells were significantly more sensitive to selenitethan either of the prostate cancer cell *** results demonstrate that selenoproteins and selenium metabolism areregulated at multiple levels in prostate cells.

Physical activity during pregnancy and the role of theory in promoting positive behavior change:A systematic review

Background: Physical activity(PA) during pregnancy provides physical and psychological benefits for mother and child. U.S. guidelines recommend ≥30 min of moderate exercise for healthy pregnant women most days of the week; however, most women do not meet these recommendations. Theory assists in identifying salient determinants of health behavior to guide health promotion interventions; however, the application of theory to examine PA among pregnant women has not been examined cohesively among multiple levels of influence(e.g.,intrapersonal, interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, and organizational/political). Subsequently, this systematic review aims to identify and evaluate the use of health behavior theory in studies that examine PA during ***: Articles published before July 2014 were obtained from Pub med and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria applied were:(1) empiricallybased;(2) peer-reviewed;(3) measured factors related to PA;(4) comprised a pregnant sample; and(5) applied theory. Fourteen studies were included. Each study's application of theory and theoretical constructs were ***: Various theories were utilized to explain and predict PA during pregnancy; yet, the majority of these studies only focused on intrapersonal level determinants. Five theoretical frameworks were applied across the studies—all but one at the intrapersonal level. Few determinants identified were from the interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, or organizational/political ***: This systematic review synthesized the literature on theoretical constructs related to PA during pregnancy. Interpersonal, community,and societal levels remain understudied. Future research should employ theory-driven multi-level determinants of PA to reflect the interacting factors influencing PA during this critical period in the life course.

Hypertension and Heart Failure as Predictors of mortality in an Adult Congenital Heart Defect Population

Early intervention to prevent premature mortality is vital for adults with congenital heart defects(CHD).Anatomic complexity and comorbid conditions are thought to contribute to CHD *** hypertension(HTN)and heart failure(HF)are the comorbid conditions among the most prevalent causes of death in the United States,and commonly accompany CHD,it is crucial to evaluate whether they are reliable predictors of mortality for adults with CHD(ACHD)independent of anatomic CHD complexity.A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of ACHD,aged 18–64,with concomitant HTN and/or HF and at least one health care encounter during 2008–2010 were *** 5,397 ACHD patients(18.3%HTN without HF,4.4%HF without HTN,8.3%with both),3.0%died(n=163)during the study ***,the sample was 45.1%white,61.4%female,and 29.0%had a complex *** those who died,23.3%had HTN without HF,17.2%had HF without HTN,and 42.3%had *** analyses revealed that older age,male gender,black race,and having public health insurance were associated with increased mortality during the three-year study period compared to ACHD patients who were younger,female gender,white race,and covered by private health *** patients diagnosed with non-complex CHD lesions(i.e.,shunts,valves,or shunts+valves)were at greater risk of dying compared to those with severe complex *** CHD type was assessed separately,those with valve lesions were more likely to die compared to those with complex CHD *** adjustment for age,gender,race,insurance and CHD complexity,ACHD patients with HF,with or without HTN,were equally likely to die during the study ***,ACHD patients with HF,without or without HTN,who had valve defects were more likely to die during the three-year study period compared to patients with complex CHDs.
