Post-weaning and whole-of-life performance of pigs is determined by live weight at weaning and the complexity of the diet fed after weaning

The production performance and financial outcomes associated with weaner diet complexity for pigs of different weight classes at weaning were examined in this experiment. A total of 720 weaner pigs(360 entire males and 360 females) were selected at weaning(27 ± 3 d) and allocated to pens of 10 based on individual weaning weight(light weaning weight: pigs below 6.5 kg; medium weaning weight: 6.5 to8 kg; heavy weaning weight: above 8.5 kg). Pens were then allocated in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with the respective factors being weaning weight(heavy, medium and light; H, M and l,respectively), weaner diet complexity(high complexity/cost, HC; low complexity/cost, lC), and gender(male and female). Common diets were fed to both treatment groups during the final 4 weeks of the weaner period(a period of 39 days). In the first 6 d after weaning, pigs offered the HC diets gained weight faster and used feed more efficiently than those offered the lC diets(P = 0.031). Pigs fed a HC diet after weaning tended to be heavier at the sale live weight of 123 d of age compared with pigs fed the lC diet(P = 0.056). There were no other main effects of the feeding program on growth performance through to slaughter. Weaning weight had a profound influence on lifetime growth performance and weight at 123 d of age, with H pigs at weaning increasing their weight advantage over the M and l pigs(101.3,97.1, 89.6 kg respectively, P lyses suggested there was a minimal benefit in terms of cost per unit live weight gain over lifetime when pigs were offered a HC feeding program to l,with a lower feed cost/kg gain. The results from this investigation confirm the impact of weaning weight on lifetime growth performance, and suggest that a HC feeding program should be focused on l weaner pigs(i.e., weaning weight less than 6.5 kg at 27 d of age) in order to maximise financial returns.

The gut microbiome: an orchestrator of xenobiotic metabolism

Microbes inhabiting the intestinal tract of humans represent a site for xenobiotic *** gut microbiome,the collection of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract,can alter the metabolic outcome of pharmaceuticals,environmental toxicants,and heavy metals,thereby changing their *** chemical modification of xenobiotics by the gut microbiome,either through the intestinal tract or re-entering the gut via enterohepatic circulation,can lead to increased metabolism or bioactivation,depending on the enzymatic activity within the microbial *** enzymes encoded within the microbiome include those that reverse the modifications imparted by host detoxification ***,the microbiome can limit xenobiotic absorption in the small intestine by increasing the expression of cell-cell adhesion proteins,supporting the protective mucosal layer,and/or directly sequestering ***,host gene expression is regulated by the microbiome,including CYP450s,multi-drug resistance proteins,and the transcription factors that regulate *** the microbiome affects the host and pharmacokinetics of the xenobiotic,xenobiotics can also influence the viability and metabolism of the *** understanding of the complex interconnectedness between host,microbiome,and metabolism will advance with new modeling systems,technology development and refinement,and mechanistic studies focused on the contribution of human and microbial metabolism.

Gully erosion spatial modelling: Role of machine learning algorithms in selection of the best controlling factors and modelling process

This investigation assessed the efficacy of 10 widely used machine learning algorithms(MlA)comprising the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(lASSO),generalized linear model(GlM),stepwise generalized linear model(SGlM),elastic net(ENET),partial least square(PlS),ridge regression,support vector machine(SVM),classification and regression trees(CART),bagged CART,and random forest(RF)for gully erosion susceptibility mapping(GESM)in *** location of 462 previously existing gully erosion sites were mapped through widespread field investigations,of which 70%(323)and 30%(139)of observations were arbitrarily divided for algorithm calibration and *** controlling factors for gully erosion,namely,soil texture,annual mean rainfall,digital elevation model(DEM),drainage density,slope,lithology,topographic wetness index(TWI),distance from rivers,aspect,distance from roads,plan curvature,and profile curvature were ranked in terms of their importance using each *** MlA were compared using a training dataset for gully erosion and statistical measures such as RMSE(root mean square error),MAE(mean absolute error),and *** on the comparisons among MlA,the RF algorithm exhibited the minimum RMSE and MAE and the maximum value of R-squared,and was therefore selected as the best *** variable importance evaluation using the RF model revealed that distance from rivers had the highest significance in influencing the occurrence of gully erosion whereas plan curvature had the least *** to the GESM generated using RF,most of the study area is predicted to have a low(53.72%)or moderate(29.65%)susceptibility to gully erosion,whereas only a small area is identified to have a high(12.56%)or very high(4.07%)*** outcome generated by RF model is validated using the ROC(Receiver Operating Characteristics)curve approach,which returned an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.985,proving the excellent forecasting ability of the model

In the past few years cool deformation research at McGill *** been centered on experimental *** this work an X70 industrial grade is examined by means of torsion *** a full hot rolling physical simulation,three levels of cool deformation strain,0.06,0.12,and 0.2 were applied at 400 o C and the subsequent strength were measured at room temperature;and the results were compared with the no-cool deformation *** effect of cooling rate after the finishing stage on the cool deformed microstructure and properties was also *** results show that by applying even a small amount of deformation,the yield point increases remarkably.

Dietary lecithin improves feed efficiency without impacting meat quality in immunocastrated male pigs and gilts fed a summer ration containing added fat

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sex and dietary lecithin on growth performance,meat quality, muscle collagen content and gene expression of key genes involved in collagen synthesis in finisher pigs.A total of 256 pigs(large White × landrace) were allotted to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement involving sex(gilt or immunocastrated [IC] male) and dietary treatment(0 or 5 g/kg of dietary lecithin).All diets were formulated to contain 4.6% tallow with relatively high total fat of 6.3%.After 5 weeks of dietary treatment, pigs were slaughtered and longissimus dorsi muscle was obtained for evaluation of meat quality and collagen *** abdominis muscle was analysed for gene expression of key genes involved in collagen synthesis namely, type Ⅰ(a1) procollagen(COl1A1), type Ⅲ(a1) procollagen(COl3A1), a-subunit of prolyl 4-hydroxylase(P4H), lysyl oxidase and metalloproteinase-1(MMP-1).The results showed that lecithin improved feed efficiency of all pigs(P ly gain and dressing percentage(P > 0.05).lecithin also had no effect on meat compression, shear force, collagen content and gene expression(P > 0.05).Immunocastrated male had higher growth rate and increased COl1 A1 expression than ***, sex had no effect on fat depth at the P2 site(65 mm from the midline over the last rib), collagen content and expression of other genes(P > 0.05).In conclusion, lecithin improved feed efficiency in finishing pigs without impacting pork ***, inclusion of lecithin in diets containing high amount of tallow during the summer period could be beneficial.

Immune dysfunction in acute alcoholic hepatitis

Acute alcoholic hepatitis(AAH) is a serious complication of alcohol misuse and has high short term mortality. It is a clinical syndrome characterised by jaundice and coagulopathy in a patient with a history of recent heavy alcohol use and is associated with profound immune dysfunction with a primed but ineffective immune response against pathogens. Here, we review the current knowledge of the pathogenesis and immune defects of AAH and identify areas requiring further study. Alcohol activates the immune system primarily through the disruption of gut tight junction integrity allowing the escape of pathogenassociated molecular particles(PAMPs) into the portal venous system. PAMPs stimulate cells expressing toll-like receptors(mainly myeloid derived cells) and initiate a network of intercellular signalling by secretion of many soluble mediators including cytokines and chemokines. The latter coordinates the infiltration of neutrophils, monocytes and T cells and results in hepatic stellate cell activation, cellular damage and hepatocyte death by necrosis or apoptosis. On the converse of this immune activation is the growing evidence of impaired microbial defence. Neutrophils have reduced phagocytic capacity and oxidative burst and there is recent evidence that T cell exhaustion plays a role in this.

Disturbance cue communication is shaped by emitter diet and receiver background risk in Trinidadian guppies

In animal communication systems,individuals that detect a cue(i.e.,“receivers”)are often influenced by characteristics of the cue *** instance,in many species,receivers avoid chemical cues that are released by emitters experiencing *** chemical“disturbance cues”appear to benefit receivers by warning them about nearby danger,such as a predator’s *** the active ingredients in disturbance cues have been largely unexplored,by-products of metabolized protein are thought to play a role for some *** so,the content(quality)and volume(quantity)of the emitter’s diet should affect their disturbance cues,thus altering how receivers perceive the cues and *** Poecilia reticulata are a species known to discriminate among disturbance cues from different types of donors,but dietary variation has yet to be *** this study,we found evidence that diet quality and quantity can affect disturbance cues released by guppy emitters(i.e.,experimental“donors”).Receivers discriminated between donor cue treatments,responding more strongly to cues from donors fed a protein-rich bloodworm diet(Experiment 1),as well as an overall larger diet(Experiment 2).We also found that receivers exposed to higher background risk were more sensitive to disturbance cue variation,with the strongest avoidance responses displayed by high-risk receivers toward disturbance cues from donors fed the high-quality ***,diet,and perhaps protein specifically,affects either the concentration or composition of disturbance cues released by *** variation may be important in information signaling in social species like the guppy.

A DNA delivery system containing listeriolys in Oresults in enhanced hepatocytedirected gene expression

AIM To determine whether incorporation of the pH dependent bacterial toxin listeriolysin O (llO) into the DNA carrier system could increase the endosomal escape of internalized DNA and result gene expression. METHODS A multi component delivery system was prepared consisting of asialoglycoprotein (ASG), poly l lysine (Pl), and llO. Two marker genes, luciferase and β galactosidase in plasmids were complexed and administered in vitro to Huh7[ASG receptor (+) ] and SK Hep1[ASG receptor (-) ] cells. Purity, hemolytic activity, gene expression, specificity, and toxicity were evaluated. RESUlTS An llO containing conjugate retained cell targeting specificity and membranolytic activity. In ASG receptor (+) cells, luciferase gene expression was enhanced by more than 7 fold over that of conjugates without the incorporation of listeriolysin O. No significant expression occurred in ASG receptor (-) cells. Enhancement of β galactosidase gene expression was less, but still significantly increased over controls. There was no detectable toxicity at concentrations shown to be effective in transfection studies. CONClUSIONS ASOR Pl can be coupled to llO using disulfide bonds, and successfully target and increase the gene expression of foreign DNA.

Dry cropland changes in China's Three Gorges Reservoir Region during the period 1990 to 2015

Monitoring and analyzing changes in the extent of cultivated land may inform strategic decisions on issues of environmental and food *** dry cropland area of 12000 km^2in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region(TGRR)of China is essential for feeding the local population of^20 million,but is highly prone to soil erosion,leading to the delivery of excessive amounts of sediment and associated pollutants to the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR),and causing serious eco-environmental *** this background,this paper used landsat images and a digital elevation model to analyze the altitudinal distribution of,and dynamic changes in,the area of dry cropland during the period 1990 to *** results suggest that dry cropland was mainly distributed in the elevation range of 200-600 *** dry cropland area decreased from 12525.37 km^2to 11796.27 km^2during the 25-year study period,including a particularly significant decrease in the rate of decrease from 6.93 km^2/yr to 43.99 km^2/yr after *** largest decline in the dry cropland area occurred in the elevation range of 600-900 *** transformations between dry cropland and forest revealed the impact of the TGR operation on the extent of dry cropland.A total of 528.79 km^2of dry cropland with slopes>25°were converted to forest after 2000,whereas a total of 642 km^2of forest was converted to dry cropland during the study period,and these conversions mainly occurred between the elevation of 200–900 *** spatiotemporal changes in the dry cropland area are likely to raise new issues concerning food security in the TGRR.
