Case Report:Fulminant type 1 diabetes in China:a case report and review of the literature

Fulminant type 1 diabetes is a recently discovered subtype of idiopathic type 1 diabetes, defined as diabetes with an extremely rapid process of β-cell destruction and progression to hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis. In this report, we present a case of fulminant type 1 diabetes in a 45-year-old Chinese woman, along with a review of the literature. The patient presented with sudden onset of polydipsia and polyuria after flu-like symptoms. Findings on admission included a high blood glucose level and ketoacidosis, but normal HbAlc level. The C-peptide stimulation test showed severe impairment of insulin secretion. Autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase （GAD） were negative. These results are compatible with the diagnosis of fulminant type 1 diabetes. Human leukocyte antigen-DR7 （HLA-DR7） was available in this case. It is concluded that this rapidly progressing type of diabetes exists, and we propose that HLA-DR7 might be predisposed to fulminant type 1 diabetes in Chinese patients.

The UV-VIS spectroscopic studies of phycoerythrobilin dimethyl ester, phycocyanobilin dimethyl ester and their derivatives indicate that shortening of the conjugative systems induces hypsochromic shifts in wavelength and increases in molar extinction coefficients in visible part;both zinc ion coordination and acetic acid treatment induce bathochromic effects for the phycobilins and their derivatives.

Control of Corner Separation for a linear Compressor Cascade via Bionic Slanting Riblets at the Endwall

A new passive control approach,utilizing bionic slanting riblets,is employed to mitigate the flow close to the blade endwall in a linear cascade,and its effectiveness and mechanism in controlling corner separation are investigated through numerical *** slanting riblets are positioned at the endwall upstream of the cascade channel,and the influence of riblet height,yaw angle and relative position on the control of corner separation is *** findings indicate that the application of slanting riblets can efficiently counteract corner separation across the stable operational ***,the introduction of riblets with a height of merely 0.1 times the boundary layer thickness results in a significant reduction in total pressure loss by up to 14.53%,while simultaneously enhancing the static pressure coefficient by 21.74%.Flow analysis reveals that minute vortices produced within the riblet channels tend to coalesce,forming a potent large-scale vortex near the boundary layer's base *** phenomenon results in reduced additional losses compared to conventional vortex ***,the induced vortex promotes enhanced mixing between the mainstream flow and boundary layer,inhibiting the lateral displacement of low-energy fluids within the endwall boundary ***,this delays the onset of separation vortex formation and eliminates vortex rings in the corner region,ultimately enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the cascade.

Hydrogen sulfide reduces oxidative stress in Huntington's disease via Nrf2

The pathophysiology of Huntington's disease involves high levels of the neurotoxin quinolinic acid. Quinolinic acid accumulation results in oxidative stress, which leads to neurotoxicity. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which quinolinic acid contributes to Huntington's disease pathology remain unknown. In this study, we established in vitro and in vivo models of Huntington's disease by administering quinolinic acid to the PC12 neuronal cell line and the striatum of mice, respectively. We observed a decrease in the levels of hydrogen sulfide in both PC12 cells and mouse serum, which was accompanied by down-regulation of cystathionine β-synthase, an enzyme responsible for hydrogen sulfide production. However, treatment with NaHS(a hydrogen sulfide donor) increased hydrogen sulfide levels in the neurons and in mouse serum, as well as cystathionine β-synthase expression in the neurons and the mouse striatum, while also improving oxidative imbalance and mitochondrial dysfunction in PC12 cells and the mouse striatum. These beneficial effects correlated with upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 expression. Finally, treatment with the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2inhibitor ML385 reversed the beneficial impact of exogenous hydrogen sulfide on quinolinic acid-induced oxidative stress. Taken together, our findings show that hydrogen sulfide reduces oxidative stress in Huntington's disease by activating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2,suggesting that hydrogen sulfide is a novel neuroprotective drug candidate for treating patients with Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND:Sulfonylurea receptor 1(SUR1)and multidrug resistance protein 1(MRP1)are two prominent members of multidrug resistance proteins associated with insulin secretion. The aims of this study were to investigate their expression in insulinomas and their sole and synergistic effects in modulating abnormal insulin secretion. METHODS:Fasting glucose,insulin and C-peptide were measured in 11 insulinoma patients and 11 healthy controls. Prolonged oral glucose tolerance tests were performed in 6 insulinoma *** content,SUR1 and MRP1 were detected in 11 insulinoma patients by immunohistochemistry. SUR1 and MRP1 were also detected in 6 insulinoma patients by immunofluorescence. RESULTS:Insulinoma patients presented the typical demons-trations of Whipple’s *** glucose of each insulinoma patient was lower than 2.8 mmol/L,and simultaneous insulin and C-peptide were increased in insulinoma patients. Prolonged oral glucose tolerance tests showed that insulin secretion in insulinoma patients were also stimulated by high *** and immunofluorescence staining showed that SUR1 increased,but MRP1 decreased in insulinoma compared with the adjacent islets. CONCLUSIONS:The hypersecretion of insulin in insulinomas might be,at least partially,due to the enrichment of SUR1. In contrast,MRP1,which is down-regulated in insulinomas, might reflect a negative feedback in insulin secretion.

Congenital X-linked adrenal hypoplasia （AHC） is a rare disease characterized by primary adrenal insufficiency before adolescence and by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism （HHG） during adolescence. In this paper, we present a Chinese family with AHC. Two brothers, misdiagnosed with adrenal insufficiency of unknown etiology at the age of 9, were correctly diagnosed with AHC when delayed puberty, HHG, and testicular defects were observed. We investigated the clinical features and identified the dosage-sensitive sex reversal AHC critical region of the X chromosome gene 1 （DAX-1） mutation in this kindred. Direct sequencing of the DAX-1 gene revealed that the two siblings have a novel mutation （1268delA） of which their mother is a heterozygous carrier. This mutation causes a frameshift and a premature stop codon at position 436, encoding a truncated protein. It is important to increase knowledge of the mutational spectrum in genes related to this disease, linking phenotype to genotype.

Effect of aeration on fast gas pressure tests

Given the problem of the long time required for testing gas pressure, we propose a fast-test method in which we used a technique of fast borehole sealing and air replenishing. Based on the characteristics of gas emission from boreholes to be tested, we built a theoretical model for calculating parameters during the process of increasing natural pressure and aeration. Using this model, we investigated the effect of different aeration conditions on velocity of pressure tests. The result shows that: 1) aerating air into boreholes can speed up gas pressure tests and 2) the more similar the pressure of the aerated air to the original gas pressure, the smaller the gas volume absorbed by coal and the shorter the time needed in pressure test. A case study in the Lu’an mining area shows that the time needed for gas pressure test is only 4 h using our method of aeration and 29 h under conditions of increasing natural pressure, saving time by 86.2%. This case study also indicates that, by using the aeration method, only one hour is needed for gas pressure to reach a stable state, which breaks the record of the shortest time needed for gas pressure tests in China.

The underlying physics of QCD phase transition in the early Universe remains largely unknown due to its strong-coupling nature during the quark-gluon plasma/hadron gas transition, yet a holographic model has been proposed to quantitatively fit the lattice QCD data while with its duration of the first-order phase transition(FoPT) left undetermined. At specific baryon chemical potential, the first-order QCD phase transition agrees with the observational constraint of baryon asymmetry. It, therefore, provides a scenario for phase transition gravitational waves(GWs) within the standard model of particle physics. If these background GWs could contribute dominantly to the recently claimed common-spectrum red noise from pulsar timing array(PTA) observations, the duration of this FoPT can be well constrained, and the associated primordial black holes are still allowed by current observations.

Sodium-ion batteries have emerged as competitive substitutes for low-temperature applications due to severe capacity loss and safety concerns of lithium-ion batteries at−20°C or ***,the key capability of ultrafast charging at ultralow temperature for SIBs is rarely ***,a hybrid of Bi nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanorods is demonstrated as an ideal material to address this issue,which is synthesized via a high temperature shock *** a hybrid shows an unprecedented rate performance(237.9 mAh g^(−1)at 2 A g^(−1))at−60℃,outperforming all reported SIB anode *** with a Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3)cathode,the energy density of the full cell can reach to 181.9 Wh kg^(−1)at−40°*** on this work,a novel strategy of high-rate activation is proposed to enhance performances of Bi-based materials in cryogenic conditions by creating new active sites for interfacial reaction under large current.
