Government environmental control measures on CO_(2) emission during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing:Perspectives from a top-down approach

Strict air pollution control measures were conducted during the Youth Olympic Games(YOG)period at Nanjing city and surrounding areas in August 2014.This event provides a unique chance to evaluate the effect of government control measures on regional atmospheric pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.Many previous studies have observed significant reductions of atmospheric pollution species and improvement in air quality,while no study has quantified its synergism on anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions,which can be coreduced with air pollutants.To better understand to what extent these pollution control measures have reduced anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions,we conducted atmospheric CO_(2)measurements at the suburban site in Nanjing city from 1^(st) July to 30^(th) September 2014 and 1^(st) August to 31^(st) August 2015,obvious decrease in atmospheric CO_(2)was observed between YOG and the rest period.By coupling the a prioriemission inventory with atmospheric transport model,we applied the scale factor Bayesian inversion approach to derive the posteriori CO_(2)emissions in YOG period and regular period.Results indicate CO_(2)emissions from power industry decreased by 45%,and other categories also decreased by 16%for manufacturing combusting,and 37%for non-metallic mineral production.Monthly total anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions were 9.8(±3.6)×10^(9) kg/month CO_(2) for regular period and decreased to 6.2(±1.9)×10^(9) kg/month during the YOG period in Nanjing city,with a 36.7%reduction.When scaling up to whole Jiangsu Province,anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions were 7.1(±2.4)×10^(10) kg/month CO_(2)for regular period and decreased to 4.4(±1.2)×10^(10)kg/month CO_(2) during the YOG period,yielding a 38.0%reduction.

Gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM)is a growing public health problem worldwide that threatens both maternal and fetal health.Identifying individuals at high risk for GDM and diabetes after GDM is particularly useful for early intervention and prevention of disease progression.In the last decades,a number of studies have used metabolomics,genomics,and proteomic approaches to investigate associations between biomolecules and GDM progression.These studies clearly demonstrate that various biomarkers reflect pathological changes in GDM.The established markers have potential use as screening and diagnostic tools in GDM and in postpartum diabetes research.In the present review,we summarize recent studies of metabolites,single-nucleotide polymorphisms,microRNAs,and proteins associated with GDM and its transition to postpartum diabetes,with a focus on their predictive value in screeningand diagnosis.

Non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA)is viewed as a key technique to improve the spectrum efficiency and solve the issue of massive connectivity.However,for power domain NOMA,the required overall transmit power should be increased rapidly with the increasing number of users in order to ensure that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio reaches a predefined threshold.In addition,since the successive interference cancellation(SIC)is adopted,the error propagation would become more serious as the order of SIC increases.Aiming at minimizing the total transmit power and satisfying each user’s service requirement,this paper proposes a novel framework with group-based SIC for the deep integration between power domain NOMA and multi-antenna technology.Based on the proposed framework,a joint optimization of power control and equalizer design is investigated to minimize transmit power consumption for uplink multi-antenna NOMA system with error propagations.Based on the relationship between the equalizer and the transmit power coefficients,the original problem is transformed to a transmit power optimization problem,which is further addressed by a parallel iteration algorithm.It is shown by simulations that,in terms of the total power consumption,the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional OMA and the existing cluster-based NOMA schemes.

Metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),and metabolic syndrome(MetS)are alarming health burdens around the world,while therapies for these diseases are far from satisfying as their etiologies are not completely dear yet.T2DM,NAFLD,and MetS are all complex and multifactorial metabolic disorders based on the interactions between genetics and environment.Omics studies such as genetics,transcriptomics,epigenetics,proteomics,and metabolomics are all promising approaches in accurately characterizing these diseases.And the most effective treatments for individuals can be achieved via omics pathways,which is the theme of precision medicine.In this review,we summarized the multi-omics studies of T2DM,NAFLD,and MetS in recent years,provided a theoretical basis for their pathogenesis and the effective prevention and treatment,and highlighted the biomarkers and future strategies for precision medicine.

Repeated train passages bring detrimental effects on train operations,especially at high speeds.In this study,a computational model consisting of moving train vehicles,track structure,and track foundation is used to investigate the stress distribution in the track substructure and underlying soil,particularly when the train speed approaches the critical speed via 2.5D finite element method.The numerical model has been validated by in-situ test results from a ballasted high-speed railway.The computational results reveal that the substructure is shown to be effective in reducing the stresses transmitted to the ground;however,a simple Boussinesq approximation is proved to be inaccurate because it cannot properly take account of the effect of multi-layered substructures and train speeds.It is acceptable to assume a simplified smooth track in the analysis model for determining the maximum stresses and displacements for a low-speed railway(≤100 km/h)but,for a high-speed one,the dynamic amplification effect of track irregularities must also be considered in subgrade design.Analysis of the stress paths revealed that the load speed and track irregularity increase the likelihood of failure for the subgrade;track irregularity can induce many times of principal stress rotations even under a simple single moving load.

Inflammation is a major underlying mechanism in the progression of numerous cardiovascular diseases(CVDs).Regulatory T cells(Tregs)are typical immune regulatory cells with recognized immunosuppressive properties.Despite the immunosuppressive properties,researchers have acknowledged the significance of Tregs in maintaining tissue homeostasis and facilitating repair/regeneration.Previous studies unveiled the heterogeneity of Tregs in the heart and aorta,which expanded in CVDs with unique transcriptional phenotypes and reparative/regenerative function.This review briefly summarizes the functional principles of Tregs,also including the synergistic effect of Tregs and other immune cells in CVDs.We discriminate the roles and therapeutic potential of Tregs in CVDs such as atherosclerosis,hypertension,abdominal arterial aneurysm,pulmonary arterial hypertension,Kawasaki disease,myocarditis,myocardial infarction,and heart failure.Tregs not only exert anti-inflammatory effects but also actively promote myocardial regeneration and vascular repair,maintaining the stability of the local microenvironment.Given that the specific mechanism of Tregs functioning in CVDs remains unclear,we reviewed previous clinical and basic studies and the latest findings on the function and mechanism of Tregs in CVDs.

The development of computer vision technology provides a possible path for realizing intelligent control of road sweepers to reduce energy waste in urban street cleaning work.For garbage segmentation of seven categories under road scene,we introduce an efficient deep-learning-based method.Our model follows a lightweight structure with a feature pyramid attention(FPA)module employed in the decoder to enhance feature integration at multi-levels.Besides,a similarity guidance(SG)module is added to the decoder branches,which calculates the cosine distance between learned prototypes and feature maps to guide the segmentation results from a metric learning perspective.Our model has less than 3 M parameters and can run at over 65 FPS in an RTX 2070 GPU.Experimental results demonstrate that our method can yield competitive results in terms of speed and accuracy trade-off,with overall mean intersection-over-union(mIoU)reaching 0.87 and 0.67,respectively,on two garbage data sets we built.Besides,our model can perform acceptable category-balanced segmentation from less than 20 annotated images per category by introducing the SG module.

Enhancing adhesive bond strength of CFRP/titanium joints through NaOH anodising and resin pre-coating treatments with optimised anodising conditions

Adhesively Bonded Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic(CFRP)and titanium alloy have been extensively used as a hybrid structure in modern aircrafts due to their excellent combination of mechanical properties and chemical stabilities.This study utilised NaOH anodising method to create micro-rough titanium surfaces for enhancing adhesive bonding between titanium alloy and CFRP laminates.A special and simple technique named Resin Pre-Coating(RPC)was also employed to improve the surface wetting of anodised titanium and grinded CFRP substrates.The influences of anodising temperature and duration on the surface morphology,wettability and adhesive bond strength were investigated.The single lap shear test results showed that the bond strength of specimens anodised at 20℃for 15 min improved by 135.9%and 95.4%,respectively,in comparison with that of acid pickled and grinded specimens(without RPC treatment).Although increasing the anodising temperature and duration produced rougher titanium surfaces,the adhesively bonded joints were not strong enough due to relatively friable titanium oxide layers.
