Lysosomal polarity is considered a key indicator of lysosomal function due to its significant impact on membrane fluidity and enzymatic reactions in lysosomes. Monitoring lysosomal polarity can gain insight into the related physiological and pathological processes and develop new diagnostic methods. However, current fluorescent probes with lysosomal polarity response suffer from narrow linear range, photobleaching and complicated preparation. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent probe(r-b CDs) for intracellular lysosomal polarity imaging is designed and constructed by amide bond assembly of polarity-sensitive red fluorescent carbon dots(r CDs) and referenced blue fluorescent carbon dots(b CDs). r-b CDs show a much wider linear range of polarity response(orientation polarizability Δf from 0.020 to 0.315) than other probes, and the interference of uneven distribution and instrument factors can be effectively eliminated by ratiometric fluorescent sensing. Imaging of intracellular lysosomal polarity with r-b CDs is implemented to observe the polarity variation caused by the change of cell state and the difference between cancer cells and normal cells. This work provides a promising tool for studying the related physiological and pathological processes and developing new diagnostic methods.

In recent years,researchers have been attempting to relate differences in personality(e.g.,boldness,aggressiveness,exploration tendency)to variation in cognition(performances in tasks that require learning,reasoning,attention,or memory,etc.)both theoretically and empirically.However,it is unclear on what basis personality and cognition might be associated with each other.Previous theory suggests a connection between fast–slow personality types and cognitive speed–accuracy tradeoffs.In this study,we tested this hypothesis in budgerigars and found that,in their 1st associative learning,birds with fast personality(less fearful of handling stress)were fast learners in the beginning,while slow personality individuals improved faster,but both types of birds did not differ in accuracy.However,these relationships were context-dependent.No significant relationship was found in subsequent learning tasks(reversal learning and a 2nd associative learning)in the familiar context(task setup and apparatus similar to the 1st associative learning).We then conducted a problem-solving experiment with novel setup and apparatus to test 1 possible explanation that the association between personality and cognition in the 1st associative learning might be caused by noncognitive constraint,such as fearfulness when facing novel task setup and apparatus.We found that fast individuals interacted more with the problem box and solved it,whereas the slow birds were not.We suggest that personalities can influence cognitive performances and trigger a cognitive speed-improvement tradeoff under the novel context.However,there are no consistent cognitive styles that co-varied with different personalities.

Non-orthogonality in non-Hermitian quantum systems gives rise to tremendous exotic quantum phenomena,which can be fundamentally traced back to non-unitarity.In this paper,we introduce an interesting quantity(denoted asη)as a new variant of the Petermann factor to directly and efficiently measure non-unitarity and the associated non-Hermitian physics.By tuning the model parameters of underlying non-Hermitian systems,we find that the discontinuity of bothηand its first-order derivative(denoted as■η)pronouncedly captures rich physics that is fundamentally caused by non-unitarity.More concretely,in the 1D non-Hermitian topological systems,two mutually orthogonal edge states that are respectively localized on two boundaries become non-orthogonal in the vicinity of discontinuity ofηas a function of the model parameter,which is dubbed"edge state transition".Through theoretical analysis,we identify that the appearance of edge state transition indicates the existence of exceptional points(EPs)in topological edge states.Regarding the discontinuity of■η,we investigate a two-level non-Hermitian model and establish a connection between the points of discontinuity of■ηand EPs of bulk states.By studying this connection in more general lattice models,we find that some models have discontinuity of■η,implying the existence of EPs in bulk states.

Attachment of bacteria and subsequent formation of biofilms on material surfaces lead to serious consequences including infection,contamination and biofouling,posing a prominent threat to human health and causing problems in many industries.Therefore,it is highly desirable to endow the surfaces with antibacterial properties.Traditional antibacterial surfaces are designed via either bacteria-resisting strategy to prevent the initial adhesion of bacteria or bacteria-killing strategy to eradicate any bacteria that attach to the surface.However,these single-function surfaces have their inherent shortcomings and cannot realize long-term efficacy against bacteria.In recent years,various dual-function antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria-resisting and bacteria-killing properties together have been developed,showing better performance for combating surface-attached bacteria and preventing formation of biofilms.In this review,we summarize the recent development of these dual-function antibacterial surfaces.We focus on the design principles and fabrication strategies of such surfaces and highlight the representative examples,which are categorized specifically into two types according to the anti-adhesive and bactericidal properties are simultaneous or switchable.A brief perspective is finally presented on current challenges and future research directions.

In the past decades,with the widespread implementation of wireless networks,such as the Internet of Things,an enormous demand for designing relative algorithms for various realistic scenarios has arisen.However,with the widening of scales and deepening of network layers,it has become increasingly challenging to design such algorithms when the issues of message dissemination at high levels and the contention management at the physical layer are considered.Accordingly,the abstract medium access control(absMAC)layer,which was proposed in2009,is designed to solve this problem.Specifically,the absMAC layer consists of two basic operations for network agents:the acknowledgement operation to broadcast messages to all neighbors and the progress operation to receive messages from neighbors.The absMAC layer divides the wireless algorithm design into two independent and manageable components,i.e.,to implement the absMAC layer over a physical network and to solve higher-level problems based on the acknowledgement and progress operations provided by the absMAC layer,which makes the algorithm design easier and simpler.In this study,we consider the implementation of the absMAC layer under jamming.An efficient algorithm is proposed to implement the absMAC layer,attached with rigorous theoretical analyses and extensive simulation results.Based on the implemented absMAC layer,many high-level algorithms in non-jamming cases can be executed in a jamming network.

How to deal with severe spinal cord injuries(SCI)?This question remains an everlasting challenge for neurologists.Recent innovative therapies such as neuromodulation,which targets the surviving tissue,have shown the potential to restore cognitive functions in patients with severe SCI after rehabilitation[1,2].These therapies might enable SCI patients to sustain active movements during rehabilitation training to enhance the reorganization of the neuronal pathways,however,the complete recovery of body movement functions was still not reached with these therapies.A characteristic feature of SCI is the impairment of neural information communication between the neurons in the spinal cord and the brain,which are responsible for regulating body movement.Brain-computer interfaces(BCIs)have been successfully applied in dealing with movement dysfunction by establishing a direct connection between brain cortical activity and electrical muscle stimulation,thereby restoring limb function in cases of paralysis[2].

BACKGROUND The cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)is a multifaceted and advancing state that requires further exploration to fully comprehend.Neu-roinflammation is considered to be one of the main mechanisms and the immune system has played a vital role in the progression of the disease.AIM To identify and validate the immune-related genes in the hippocampus associated with T2DM-related cognitive impairment.METHODS To identify differentially expressed genes(DEGs)between T2DM and controls,we used data from the Gene Expression Omnibus database GSE125387.To identify T2DM module genes,we used Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis.All the genes were subject to Gene Set Enrichment Analysis.Protein-protein interaction network construction and machine learning were utilized to identify three hub genes.Immune cell infiltration analysis was performed.The three hub genes were validated in GSE152539 via receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.Validation experiments including reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR,Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were conducted both in vivo and in vitro.To identify potential drugs associated with hub genes,we used the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database(CTD).RESULTS A total of 576 DEGs were identified using GSE125387.By taking the intersection of DEGs,T2DM module genes,and immune-related genes,a total of 59 genes associated with the immune system were identified.Afterward,machine learning was utilized to identify three hub genes(H2-T24,Rac3,and Tfrc).The hub genes were associated with a variety of immune cells.The three hub genes were validated in GSE152539.Validation experiments were conducted at the mRNA and protein levels both in vivo and in vitro,consistent with the bioinformatics analysis.Additionally,11 potential drugs associated with RAC3 and TFRC were identified based on the CTD.CONCLUSION Immune-related genes that differ in expression in the hippocampus are closely linked to microglia.We validated the expression of three hub genes

Analysis of the internal charging data in medium earth orbit with numerical simulation and ground experiment

The deep dielectric charging effect monitor(DDCEM)has been designed to study the internal charging effect by measuring the charging currents and potentials inside the spacecraft.It is equipped on three Chinese navigation satellites in a circular medium earth orbit(MEO)with 22000 km average height and 55°inclinations.Numerical simulation based on the Geant4-RIC method was used to evaluate the data of DDCEM.The data during May to November 2019 on one of the three satellites show that the charging currents of DDCEM were negatively enhanced when the satellite moved into the outer radiation belt.The currents reached the negative maximum during a significant electron enhancement in September 2019.Positive currents were also detected besides negative currents that were caused by the deposition of electrons in the sensor.The causation of positive currents in the space environment may be that the low-energy electrons cannot penetrate the satellite skin and make it charging to negative potential,the reference ground of DDCEM that is connected to the satellite skin drops below zero by the low-energy electrons so that the output currents turn to positive.Ground experiment was used to simulate the causation of positive currents and the result verified our theory.

AIM: To describe and evaluate a new ophthalmic endoscope surgical technique combined with phacoe-mulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to treat goniosynechialysis and manage primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). ·METHODS: Endoscope-assisted goniosynechialysis combined with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation was performed in 32 eyes of 29 patients with PACG. Regular follow-up was performed 1 week and 1 month, 3, and 6 months after surgery to assess complications, intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber depth, visual acuity, and anterior chamber angle. ·RESULTS: Preoperative mean IOP was 24.88±7.22mmHg with pharmacological treatment, and was 13.70 ±4.02, 13.06 ±3.74, 14.29 ±4.70, and 14.33 ±5.01mmHg 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery, respectively. The postoperative decrease in IOP was significant (P < 0.05). The rate for all eyes with IOP of 21mmHg or less was 93.8% (30 eyes) at the final visit without ocular hypotensive agents. The average preoperative anterior chamber depth was 1.60 ±0.64mm, and this value significantly increased to 2.72±0.62, 2.76±0.70, 2.73±0.68, and 2.74 ±0.71mm at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months, respectively. Visual acuity was improved in 28 eyes (87.5% ) at 6 months postoperatively. The anterior chamber angle had increased in 25 eyes (78.1% ) at the final visit; it was adhesive 90°-180° in 6 eyes, 180°-270° in only 1 eye. Two eyes exhibited minimal hyphema in the early postoperative period, but it could gradually be absorbed. Fibrinous reaction was observed in five eyes and spontaneously disappeared within 7 days. No shallow anterior chamber, iridodialysis, choroidal deta-chment, or malignant glaucoma was found in any eyes.CONCLUSION:Endoscope-assisted goniosynechialysis combined with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation to manage PACG has several advantages, including optimized visualization, greater accuracy, and improved safety. Our results suggest that it has certain curative effects and clinical application value.

Towards commercialization of perovskite solar cells(PSCs),further reducing the cost and increasing the stability of PSCs have been the most important tasks of researchers,as the efficiency of single-junction PSCs has reached a competitive level among all kinds of single-junction solar cells.Carbon-electrode-based PSCs(CPSCs),as one of the most promising constructions for achieving stable economical PSCs,now attract enormous attention for their cost-effectiveness and stability.Here,we briefly review the development of CPSCs and reveal the importance of n-i-p architecture for state-of-the-art CPSCs.However,despite their promising potential,challenges still exist in CPSCs in the n-i-p architecture,which mainly stem from the incompact contact of the hole-transporting layer(HTL)/carbon electrode.Thus,new carbon materials and/or novel manufacturing methods should be proposed.In addition,HTL is yet to be appropriate for state-of-the-art CPSCs because the fabrication of carbon electrode could result in the destruction of the underlayer.To further enhance the performance of CPSCs,both the HTL and electron transport layer as well as their interfaces with perovskite active layer need to be improved.We recommend that the perovskite active layer,with its long carrier lifetime,strong carrier transport capability,and long-term stability,is necessary as well for improved performance of CPSCs.We also highlight current researches on CPSCs and provide a systematic review of various types of regulation tools.
