Geochronology of Yanshanian Magmatism and Metamorphism in the Hinterland of the Dabie Mountains and Their Geologic Implications

A strong tectono-magmatic thermal event has been revealed by field observations of granitic, migmatiticand metamorphic rocks in the hinterland of the Dabie Mountains. K-Ar, Ar-Ar and Rb-Sr determinationsshow that the event took place 133-117 Ma ago (Yanshanian). Contemporaneously, a southwestwardthrust-type ductile shearing at multiple levels occurred in the lower crust or at even deeper levels, suggestingthat the Dabie Mountains region was still under the influence ot strong continent-continent overlappingtectonism of the Yangtze block under the Sino-Korean block at depth. Metamorphic rocks of amphibolitefacies, migmatites and deep structural deformations resulting from this tectonothermal event are now exposedto the surface. The present features of the Dabie Mountains thus have appeared only since ca. 100 Ma B.P. Theblock composed of the Dabie Group is not an uplift or shield which would have undergone a long-continuederosion.

Since the middle Early Pleistocene (1.20 Ma B.P.), the desert steppe climate and environment have predominated in the Lop Nur area, Xinjiang, characterized by warm humid epochs interrupted by dry cold intervals. The grain-size and magnetic susceptibility curves record 30 climatic oscillations, each with a ca. 40 ka cycle, in the area since 1.2 Ma B.P., which reflects the controlling effects exerted by the astronomic factor on the environment. The Quaternary sedimentary environment in the Lop Nur gradually changed from a fresh lake through a brackish lake to a saline lake, showing a spiral evolution, and finally it evolved into a playa.

Introduction The geological Map of the People＇s Republic of china in chinese and English versions was published by SinoMaps Press in 2004, at the scale of 1：2 500 000. It includes eight sheets. The chief compiler is Huang Chongke, and the associate chief compilers are Ye Tianzhu, chen Keqiang, Wu Kuanlian, Ji Xiaoyan, Gao Zhenjia, Qian Dadu, Tian Yuying, He Yongxiang, Zhang Qinghe, Cao Banggong, Li Long, Shao Heming, Wang Yongqin, Yang Minggui, Zhang Zhongwei, Yao Dongsheng and Zheng Jiankang. More than 100 geologists, cartographers and computer mapping experts took part in the compilation of the map.
