Oral Healthcare Renunciation and Socioeconomic Determinants

The unequal access to healthcare in general and oral healthcare, in particular, is a true public health concern. Thus, it is important to assess the oral healthcare renunciation and socioeconomic determinants to take appropriate measures. A cross-sectional, descriptive population-based study of 300 households was carried out between April 28, 2016, and May 28, 2016, according to WHO’s guidelines (Protocol 1997), in Senegal adapted form. Results showed that 18.23% of householders report that their household members have foregone oral healthcare. Among those who renounced care, 51.5% did so for care costs (24.2%) or remoteness of health facilities (27.3%) reasons. Therefore, dental treatment renunciation was independently associated to income level, age, sex, marital status, and types of oral healthcare coverage. This study’s analysis shows that oral healthcare renunciation depends primarily on the financial aspect and the remoteness of health structures. Still, there are other important socio-anthropological parameters that should be investigated.

Dental Caries and Associated Determinants among Students of the Military School of Saint louis (Senegal)

Introduction: Due to its health, social and economic morbidity, dental caries leads to absenteeism and a drop in school performance among schoolchildren. The objective of this work is to study dental caries and its determinants in pupils known as Children of Troop (CT) of the “Military School of Saint louis” (MSS). Method: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Recruitment was exhaustive. The collection was made at the school and has covered the period of March 10 throughout June 13, 2014 in an individual interview, based upon a deliberate consent, using a questionnaire drawn up on the basis of the variables studied. The bivariate analysis was done with the Epi Info software version 3.5.3. Results: The mean age of CT was 14.9. The prevalence of caries was 61.2%. Determinants related to caries were: sugar intake between meals (OR = 6.44 [3.4 - 11.9]);insufficient tooth brushing (OR = 14.3 [8.8 - 23.29]);(OR = 3.84 [2.38 - 7.14]) and for regular dental visits (OR = 5.26 [3.44 - 8.33]), with the last dental visit dating back more than one year. Conclusion: In the face of challenges of school performance of CT, it is necessary to set up a control plan focusing mainly on the factors identified and associated with dental caries in military school.

Evaluation of Quantitative and Qualitative losses on Millet and White Rice in Storage Grains Caused by <i>Corcyra cephalonica</i>(Stainton) in Senegal

In Senegal, millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) and rice (Oryza sativa (L., 1753)) are the most widely consumed foods. This study is part of improving the conservation of these two cereals in Senegal by assessing the quantitative and qualitative losses caused by a lepidopteran, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) subservient to millet and rice stocks. For this purpose, samples of millet and rice from an area of the center of the groundnut basin (Diourbel) were collected, sterilized in the cold and infected with C. cephalonica eggs from the same locality. These infected samples were tracked during a development period of two successive generations. The samples were scrutinized before being infected and after a larval cycle of codling moth. The results showed that rice grains are richer in water (10.75% ± 0.4249%, on average) than millet (9.40% ± 0.3944%, on average) and the difference in rank is very significant (p-value = 0.0001 Moreover, the attack percentage on millet grains is three times higher (36.31% ± 25.18%) than rice (12.95% ± 6.69%) with a non-significant difference (p-value =

Severity and Magnitude of Caries among Rural Populations in Ferlo in Senegal

Oral diseases belong to non-communicable diseases. They are characterized by their importance especially in disadvantaged areas. The objective of this study was to measure the extent and severity of caries among rural populations of Widou, an area located in central Ferlo. It was a descriptive and cross-sectional study which involved 300 individuals selected using simple random sampling. The socio-demographic characteristics collected were sex, age, educational level and occupation. The dental status was rated by the prevalence of dental caries and DMF and its components. The data were analyzed with the software Epi info 3.4.5 with 5% of threshold statistical significance. The prevalence of dental caries was 89%. The mean DMF was 5.4 ± 5.6 with a maximum of 26. The mean of component “D” was 3.8 with a maximum of 24. Variables significantly associated with dental caries were sex (p = 0.012) and occupation (p = 0.03). The extent and severity of caries in rural areas of the Ferlo evoke a relatively low support or management and require efforts in prevention, directed on oral hygiene and dietary habits.
