SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide and boosts proinflammatory activity

There is a link between high lipopolysaccharide(LPS)levels in the blood and the metabolic syndrome,and metabolic syndrome predisposes patients to severe ***,we define an interaction between SARS-CoV-2 spike(S)protein and LPS,leading to aggravated inflammation in vitro and in *** gel electrophoresis demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 S protein binds to *** thermophoresis yielded a of〜47 nm for the *** modeling and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations further substantiated the experimental results,identifying a main LPS-binding site in SARS-CoV-2 S protein.S protein,when combined with low levels of LPS,boosted nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-k B)activation in monocytic THP-1 cells and cytokine responses in human blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cells,*** in vitro inflammatory response was further validated by employing NF-kB reporter mice and in vivo *** light scattering,transmission electron microscopy,and LPS-FITC analyses demonstrated that S protein modulated the aggregation state of LPS,providing a molecular explanation for the observed boosting *** together,our results provide an interesting molecular link between excessive inflammation during infection with SARS-CoV-2 and comorbidities involving increased levels of bacterial endotoxins.

Contribution of alpha-fetoprotein in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma

Alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) is the main tumor biomarker available for the management of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Although it is neither a good screening test nor an accurate diagnostic tool for HCC, it seems to be a possible prognostic marker. However, its contribution in liver transplantation for HCC has not been fully determined, although its use to predict recurrence after liver transplantation has been underlined by international societies. In an era of organ shortages, it could also have a key role in the selection of patients eligible for liver transplantation. Yet unanswered questions remain. First, the cut-off value of serum AFP above which liver transplantation should not be performed is still a subject of debate. We show that a concentration of 1000 ng/m L could be an exclusion criterion, whereas values of m L indicate patients with an excellent prognosis whatever the size and number of tumors. monitoring the dynamics of AFP could also prove useful. However, evidence is lacking regarding the values that should be used. Today, the real input of AFP seems to be its integration into new criteria to select patients eligible for a liver transplantation. These recent tools have associated AFP values with morphological criteria, thus refining pre-existing criteria, such as milan, University of California, San Francisco, or "up-to-seven". We provide a review of the different criteria submitted within the past years. Finally, AFP can be used to monitor recurrence after transplantation, although there is little evidence to support this claim. Future challenges will be to draft new international guidelines to implement the use of AFP as a selection tool, and to determine a clear cut-off value above which liver transplantation should not be performed.

Design of a rural-urban sustainable consists six small businesses that use appropriate technologies, human work and natural resources of the region. The six sustainable technological-economic activities will be localized in a single field, so, there is interaction between all activities and workers. The site also have to educate the surrounding communities to environmental issues. It is also a demonstration of how to improve the economic development of a region without damaging the environment. The proposal is to create a cooperative society with interested persons of the area and working groups for the six proposed technical and economic activities.

Drying conditions in Switzerland-indication from a 35-year Landsat time-series analysis of vegetation water content estimates to support SDGs

Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to *** bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode *** study focuses on enhancing this transfer by engineering a polydopamine(PDA)coating on the outer membrane of the photosynthetic microbe Synechocystis *** coating provides a conductive nanoparticle shell to increase electrode adhesion and improve microbial charge extraction.A combination of scanning electron microscopy(SEm),transmission electron microscopy(TEm),UV–Vis absorption,and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the nanoparticle shell under various synthesis *** cell viability and activity were further assessed through oxygen evolution,growth curve,and confocal fluorescence microscopy *** results show sustained cell growth and detectable PDA surface coverage under slightly alkaline conditions(pH 7.5)and at low initial dopamine(DA)concentrations(1 mm).The exoelectrogenicity of the cells prepared under these conditions was also characterized through cyclic voltammetry(CV)and chronoamperometry(CA).The measurements show a three-fold enhancement in the photocurrent at an applied bias of 0.3 V(***/AgCl[3 m KCl])compared to non-coated *** study thus lays the framework for engineering the next generation of living photovoltaics with improved performances using biosynthetic electrodes.

Long-term outcomes of interventions for radiation-induced xerostomia:A review

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a significant problem affecting quality of life in patients treated with radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Strategies for reduction of xerostomia burden vary widely, with options including: sialagogue medications, saliva substitutes, acupuncture, vitamins, hyperbaric oxygen,submandibular gland transfer, and acupuncture or associated treatments. In this review, we sought to evaluate long-term outcomes of patients treated with various interventions for radiation-induced xerostomia. A literature search was performed using the terms "xerostomia" and "radiation" or "radiotherapy"; all prospective clinical trials were evaluated, and only studies that reported 1 year follow up were included. The search results yielded 2193 studies, 1977 of which were in English. Of those, 304 were clinical trials or clinical studies. After abstract review, 23 trials were included in the review evaluating the following treatment modalities: pilocarpine(three); cevimeline(one); amifostine(eleven);submandibular gland transfer(five); acupuncture like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(ALTENS)(one); hyperbaric oxygen(one); and acupuncture(one). Pilocarpine, cevimeline, and amifostine have been shown in some studies to improve xerostomia outcomes, at the cost of toxicity. ALTENS has similar efficacy with fewer side effects. Submandibular gland transfer is effective but requires an elective surgery, and thus may not always be appropriate or *** use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy, in addition to dose deescalation in select patients, may result in fewer patients with late xerostomia,reducing the need for additional interventions.

Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital malformations in Douala General Hospital

To determine the prevalence of congenital malformations and the proportion of cases diagnosed before birth;to specify this proportion according to the type of malformation and the sonographer qualification. methods: It was a cross-sectional study carried out at the Douala General Hospital in the obstetric and neonatal units over a period of 42 months, from January 2008 to June 2012. The procedure consisted of;firstly an explanation of the study purpose with consent of parents obtained, thereafter, the parents were interviewed and data extracted from their files. The new born had a complete clinical exam. morphological and biological assessment were done to ascertain diagnosis if needed. They were then followed up for 48 hours. Data were analysed using SPSS. Statistical analyses were mainly descriptive: mean, median, mode and frequency were calculated. Results: During this period, 6048 neonates were examined, 99 of whom had a malformation giving a prevalence of 1.64%. musculoskeletal defects were the most common (36.4%), followed by digestive tract defects (22.2%). Ultrasounds were carried out mainly in the second term. Among the malformed babies, only 16.2% were diagnosed during the prenatal period. The obstetricians did better than radiologist in the prenatal diagnosis of congenital malformations. All the urinary tract malformations and 33.3% of the polymalformations were diagnosed by prenatal echography. Among the malformed babies, 33% died within the first 48 hours of life and poly-malformed babies were more concerned (66.7%). Conclusion: The prevalence of congenital birth defect was 1.64%. The rate of prenatal diagnosis remained low, meanwhile one third of the affected babies die after births. An early diagnosis would anticipate on medical care at birth and allow therapeutics abortions when indicated.
