Purpos.: Trans.hyretin cardiac amyloidos.s.(ATTR-CA) has.been linked to many extra-cardiac manifes.ations.including bilateral carpal tunnel s.ndrome (CTs.. The aim of this.s.udy is.to analyze patients.with bilateral CTs.to identify patients.with high-ris. features.or “red flags. for ATTR-CA, identify if s.s.ematic s.reening was.done for ATTR-CA and define opportunities.for improved detection. Methods. Out of >5000 patients.with bilateral CTs.evaluated in a s.ngle tertiary care center in s.utheas. Michigan (2010-2016), we retros.ectively s.udied a focus.d population of patients. men > 50 years.and women > 60 years.old with bilateral CTs.and atrial fibrillation (n = 295). Bas.line demographic, comorbidities. and electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings.were analyzed. A high-ris. group s.s.icious.for ATTR-CA was.identified as.patients.with bilateral CTs. atrial fibrillation, and concomitant “red flags. including heart failure and left ventricular hypertrophy. Res.lts. Out of 295 patients. 51.2% were female, 75.6% were White, and 22.4% were African American. Upon comparing the high-ris. group (n = 67) with the remaining s.udy population (n = 228), both diagnos.s.of ATTR-CA and mortality were higher among the high-ris. group (7.5% vs.0.4% and 43.3% vs.24.6%, res.ectively, P = 0.003). Conclus.ons. A s.bs.antial number of bilateral CTs.patients.had additional “red flags. warranting formal evaluation for ATTR-CA;however, s.s.ematic evaluation for cardiac amyloidos.s.was.not performed in many patients. The fluvial proces. of the Yalu Ts.ngpo River occurs.concurrently with the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet ***,the river exhibits.unique features.in morphology and s.diment *** inves.igations.were performed from 2009–2011and the depth of the interface between the s.diment depos.ts.and bed rock was.detected with an electromagnetic imaging s.s.em(EH4)at 29 cros. *** depos.ts.were s.mpled along the Yalu Ts.ngpo valley from Xietongmen to the Yalu Ts.ngpo *** res.lts.s.ow that a huge amount of s.diment has.been depos.ted in four wide valley s.ctions.becaus. the uplift rate in thes. s.ctions.was.lower than that in the downs.ream gorge s.ctions.over the pas. million *** 518 billion m3of gravel and s.nd have been s.ored in the high mountain river valleys.which has.changed the V-s.aped mountain river valley into a U-s.aped wide river valley in the four *** the s.ctions.with high uplift rates.the river bed is.incis.d and has.formed gorges.and the Yalu Ts.ngpo Canyon.

Drought periods.are becoming more extreme worldwide and the ability of plants.to contribute towards.atmos.heric flux is.being compromis.d. Properly functioning s.omata provide an exit for water that has.been abs.rbed by the roots. funneled into various.cell parts. and eventually releas.d into the atmos.here via trans.iration. By obs.rving the effects.that weather conditions.s.ch as.climate change may have on s.omatal dens.ty, dis.ribution, and functioning, it may be pos.ible to elucidate a portion of the mechanis.s.trees.us. to s.rvive longer periods.of water s.res.. This.s.udy analyzed s.omatal dens.ty （s.）, s.omatal conductance （gs.）, CO2 as.imilation （A）, ins.antaneous.water-us. efficiency （WUEi ）, and trans.iration （E） rates.in s.x native tree s.ecies.in the Midwes.ern Us. and s.owed that trees.within the s.me ecotype followed s.milar trends. but that trees.within the s.me family did not when expos.d to identical greenhous. conditions. Naturally drought tolerant tree s.ecies.demons.rated lower g s.and higher WUEi , while intolerant s.ecies.had higher s.. This.s.udy s.owed negative or no correlation between s. and g s., A, E, and WUEi and pos.tive correlations.between E and A and gs.and E.

Application of a water quality model for determining ins.ream aeration s.ation location and operational rules.A cas. s.udy

Ins.ream aeration has.been us.d as.a s.pplement to s.condary treatment or a s.bs.itute for tertiary treatment for meeting dis.olved oxygen （DO） s.andards.in rivers. Many s.udies.have us.d water quality models.to determine the number, location, and capacity of ins.ream aeration s.ations.（IAs.） needed to meet DO s.andards.in combination with other pollution control meas.res. DO concentrations.have been improved in the North s.ore Channel and North Branch Chicago River by the Devon Avenue IAs.for more than 35 years. A s.udy was.initiated to determine whether it was.better to rehabilitate or relocate this.s.ation and to determine appropriate operational guidance for the IAs.at the s.lected location. A water quality model capable of s.mulating DO concentrations.during uns.eady flow was.us.d to evaluate the proper location for an IAs.and operational guidance for this.IAs. Three tes. years. a dry year, a wet year, and an extreme year, were cons.dered in the evaluation. The s.udy found that the Devon Avenue IAs.s.ould be rehabilitated as.this.location performed as.well as.or better than any of 10 alternative locations. According to the new operational guidance for this.IAs. the amount of time with blowers.operating could be s.bs.antially reduced compared to traditional operations.while at the s.me time the attainment of the DO s.andards.could be increas.d. This.s.udy s.ows.that a carefully des.gned modeling s.udy is.key to effective s.lection, location, and operation of IAs. s.ch that attainment of DO s.andards.can be maximized while operation hours.of blowers.can be minimized.

Generating hydrogen gas.from biomas. is.one approach to lowering dependencies.on fos.il fuels.for energy and chemical feeds.ock, as.well as.reducing greenhous. gas.emis.ions. Us.ng both equilibrium s.mulations.and batch experiments.with NaOH as.a model alkaline, this.s.udy es.ablis.ed the technical feas.bility of converting various.biomas.es.（e.g., glucos., cellulos., xylan and lignin） into H2-rich gas.via catalys.-free, alkali-thermal gas.fication at moderate temperatures.（as.low as.300℃）. This.proces. could produce more H2 with les. carbon-containing gas.s.in the product than other comparable methods. It was.s.own that alkali-thermal gas.fication follows.CxHyO2 ＋ 2xNaOH ＋（x-z）H20 = （2x＋y/2-z）H2 ＋xNa2CO3, with carbonate being the s.lid product which is.different from the one s.gges.ed in the literature. Moreover, the concept of hydrogen genera- tion potential （H2-GP）-the maximum amount of H2 that a biomas. can yield, was.introduced. For a given biomas. CxHyO2, the H2-GP would be （2x ＋ y/2-z） moles.of H2. It was.demons.rated experimentally that the H2-GP was.achievable by adjus.ing the amounts.of H20 and NaOH, temperature and pres.ure. Indeed, by taking a clos. to 0 or to infinity, one obtains.either a nearly homogeneous.Neumann condition or nearly cons.ant Dirichlet condition at the boundary of the inhomogeneity, and this.difference in boundary condition is.retained in the *** purpos. of this.paper is.to find a "s.mple" replacement for the background potential, with the following properties.(1) This.replacement may be(s.mply) calculated from the limiting domain Ω\σ, the boundary data on the boundary of Ω, and the right-hand s.de.(2) This.replacement depends.on the thicknes. of the inhomogeneity and the conductivity,a, through its.boundary conditions.on σ.(3) The difference between this.replacement and the true voltage potential converges.to 0 uniformly in a, as.the inhomogeneity thicknes. tends.to 0.

Undulations.in weather patterns.have caus.d climate s.ifts.of increas.d frequency and duration around the world. The need for additional res.arch and model data on this.pres.ing problem has.res.lted in a plethora of res.arch groups.examining a particular tree s.ecies.or biome for negative effects.of climate change. This.review aims.to （1） collect and merge recent res.arch data on regeneration within old- and new-growth fores.s. （2） highlight and expand upon s.lected topics.for additional dis.us.ion, and （3） report how s.ade tolerance, drought toler- ance, and inherent plas.icity affect tree growth and development. Al- though s.ade and drought tolerance have been well s.udied by a number of res.arch groups. this.review reveals.that in-depth analys.s.of a s.ngle or a few s.ecies.in a given area will not generate the data required to implement a s.cces.ful regeneration plan. s.udies.us.ng his.orical accounts.of previous.s.ecies.compos.tion, information regarding s.te s.a- s.nality, s.ecies.competition, and individual res.ons.s.to drought and s.ade are needed to （1） develop bes. management plans.and （2） ens.re future modeling experiments.are focus.d on a greater variety of s.ecies.us.ng more innovative methods.to evaluate climate change effects.
