Biochar amen.men.s to soils may alter soil fun.tion.an. fertility in.various ways, in.ludin. through in.uced chan.es in.the microbial commun.ty. We assessed microbial activity an. commun.ty composition.of two distin.t clayey soil types, an.Aridisol from Colorado （CO） in.the U.S. Cen.ral Great Plain., an. an.Alfisol from Virgin.a （VA） in.the southeastern.USA followin. the application.of switchgrass （Pan.cum virgatum） biochar. The switchgrass biochar was applied at four levels, 0%,0, 2.5%, 5%, an. 10%, approximately equivalen. to biochar addition. of 0, 25, 50, an. 100 t ha^-1, respectively, to the soils grown.with wheat （Triticum aestivum） in.an.eight-week growth chamber experimen.. We measured wheat shoot biomass an. n.trogen.（n. con.en. an. soil n.trien. availability an. n.min.ralization.rates, an. characterized the microbial fatty acid methyl ester （FAME） profiles of the soils. n.t n.min.ralization.rates decreased in.both soils in.proportion.to an.in.rease in.biochar levels, but the effect was more marked in.the VA soil, where n.t n.min.ralization.decreased from -2.1 to -38.4 mg kg^-1. The 10% biochar addition.in.reased soil pH, electrical con.uctivity, Mehlich- an. bicarbon.te-extractable phosphorus （P）, an. extractable potassium （K） in.both soil types. The wheat shoot biomass decreased from 17.7 to 9.1 g with in.remen.al addition. of biochar in.the CO soil, but n. differen.e was n.ted in.plan.s grown.in.the VA soil. The FAME recovery assay in.icated that the switchgrass biochar addition.could in.roduce artifacts in.an.lysis, so the results n.eded to be in.erpreted with caution. n.n.corrected total FAME con.en.ration. in.icated a declin. by 457o an. 34% with 10% biochar addition.in.the CO an. VA soils, respectively, though these differen.es became n.n.ign.fican. when.the extraction.efficien.y correction.factor was applied. We validated a radioimmun.assay-based method quan.ifyin. fecal glucocorticoid metabolites （FGMs） from captive male an. female Richardson.s groun. squirrels Urocitellus richardson.i. Blood samples were drawn.to explore the correlation.between.plasma cortisol an. FGM con.en.ration.. We also in.ected groups of squirrels with n.rmal salin. （CTL; con.rol）, adre- n.corticotropic hormon. （ACTH; stimulatin. adren.l activity）, or dexamethason. （DEX; suppressin. adren.l activity）. Poten.ial correlation. between.stress an. behaviour were explored through quan.ification.of fecal pellet production.an. the in.erven.ion.n.cessary to elicit defecation. as well as the behaviour of subjects in.the con.ext of han.lin.. Chan.es in.plasma cortisol con.en. tration.between.capture （baselin.）, an. followin. han.lin. （stress-in.uced） were also quan.ified for free-livin. squirrels. While glucocorticoid con.en.ration. recovered from feces durin. our captive-an.mal study were n.t well correlated with plasma eortisol con.en.ration., an. un.orrelated with defecation.or behaviour, FGM con.en.ration. did reflect the activation.of the hypothalamic- pituitary-adren.l （HPA） axis. The objective of this pilot study was to compare two differen. methods of educatin. pren.tal women.regardin. breast-feedin.. Comparison. were made between.tradition.l an. in.ovative methods to determin. which was more effective in.in.reasin. breastfeedin. duration. Over a 32 mon.h period, 197 pren.tal women.were assign.d to either a con.rol (C, n.= 139) or an.experimen.al (E, n.= 51) group. The C group received stan.ard breastfeedin. education. while the E group received stan.ard education.in.addition.to in.ormation.about in.an. hun.er cues. Cox Regression.an. Kap-lan. Meier an.lysis were performed. Estimated mean.n.mber of weeks for C an. E groups to con.in.e breastfeedin. was 14.3 + 17.4 weeks an. 18.5 + 17.1 weeks, respectively. At 26 weeks, duration.of breastfeedin. approached sign.fican.e (chi square = 2.907, df = 1, p = 0.088), in.icatin. probability of con.in.in. to breastfeed was about 28% better for those in.E group when.compared to C group. Duration.of breastfeedin. may in.rease when.pren.tal women.are taught to iden.ify in.an. behavior such as hun.er cues.
