By definition,biomaterials are developed for clinical *** the field of regenerative medicine their principal function is to play a significant,and,if possible,an instructive role in tissue *** the last analysis the latter involves targeting the‘regenerative niche’.The present paper will address the problem of simulating this niche in the laboratory and adopts a life science approach involving the harnessing of heterotypic cellular communication to achieve this,that is,the ability of cells of different types to mutually influence cellular ***,co-culture systems using human cells are the methodological focus and will concern four exemplary fields of regeneration,namely,bone,soft tissue,lower respiratory tract and airway *** working hypothesis underlying this approach is that in vitro models of higher complexity will be more clinically relevant than simple monolayer cultures of transformed cell lines in testing innovative strategies with biomaterials for regeneration.

The aim of the present study was the in vitro and in vivo analysis of a bi-layered 3D-printed scaffold combining a PLA layer and a biphasic PLA/bioglass G5 layer for regeneration of osteochondral defects in vivo Focus of the in vitro analysis was on the(molecular)weight loss and the morphological and mechanical variations after immersion in *** in vivo study focused on analysis of the tissue reactions and differences in the implant bed vascularization using an established subcutaneous implantation model in CD-1 mice and established histological and histomorphometrical *** scaffold parts kept their structural integrity,while changes in morphology were observed,especially for the PLA/G5 *** properties decreased with progressive degradation,while the PLA/G5 scaffolds presented higher compressive modulus than PLA *** tissue reaction to PLA included low numbers of BMGCs and minimal vascularization of its implant beds,while the addition of G5 lead to higher numbers of BMGCs and a higher implant bed *** revealed that the use of a bi-layered scaffold shows the ability to observe distinct in vivo response despite the physical proximity of PLA and PLA/G5 ***,the results showed that the addition of G5 enables to reduce scaffold weight loss and to increase mechanical ***,the addition of G5 lead to a higher vascularization of the implant bed required as basis for bone tissue regeneration mediated by higher numbers of BMGCs,while within the PLA parts a significantly lower vascularization was found optimally for chondral ***,this data show that the analyzed bi-layered scaffold may serve as an ideal basis for the regeneration of osteochondral tissue ***,the results show that it might be able to reduce the number of experimental animals required as it may be possible to analyze the tissue response to more than one implant in one experimental animal.

Due to its importance in hydrogen production during the photolysis process of aqueous suspensions process, mixed TiO2/V2O5 metal-oxide semiconductors were prepared and subjected to crystal structure investigation using X-ray technique. The photoelectrochemical behavior of these TiO2/V2O5 was investigated by photolysis of aqueous suspensions of these oxides containing [Fe(CN)6]4-. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the TiO2 crystallites grow in the (1 0 1) direction, while The V2O5 crystallites seem to be growing in the (4 2 0) direction, with increasing concentration of V2O5. Photolysis studies show that photochemical activities that maintained the [Fe(CN)6]4/[Fe(CN)6]3- redox reversibility increased by increasing V2O5 up to 50% and then decreased at greater percentages. Aqueous nano systems used in these studies retained their stability as indicated by the reproducibility of their photo-catalytic activities.

Background:While the optimal combination of whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (sRs) and surgical resection in the treatment of brain metastases, is controversial, the addition of sRs to surgical resction of solitary metastasis may enhance local control while potentially minimizing toxicity associated with adjuvant WBRT. This study seeks to determine whether pre-operative sRs to the lesion versus post-operative sRs to the resection bed may reduce irradiation of adjacent normal brain tissue. Methods:A retrospective study of 12 patients with 13 surgically resected cerebral metastases was performed. The pre-operative contrast-enhancing tumors and post-operative resection cavities plus any enhancing residual disease were contoured to yield the gross target volume (GTV). In turn these GTV''''s were uniformly expanded by 3-mm to generate the pre-operative, as well as post-operative planning target volume (PTV.) For each lesion, a 7-static-conformal-beam, non-coplanar plan utilizing 6 MV photons was generated to encompass the PTV within the 85％isodose line. Excess normal brain volume irradiated was defined as the volume outside the GTV receiving the prescribed dose. Results:When lesions were divided into two groups-Group A (pre-operative GTV''''ss>15 cc, n=4)-the average volume of normal brain irradiated was significantly smaller if pre-operative sRs was used for treatment of lesions in Group A (9.5 vs. 16.8 cc, paired t-test, p=0.0045). In contrast, this volume was smaller for Group B lesions if post-operative sRs was used for treatment of these lesions (27.6 vs. 51.2 cc, p=0.252). A comparison of groups with respect to mean volume differences between pre-and post-operative sRs was significantly different (two-sample t-test p=0.016).
