Characteristics and trends of pediatric firepit burns: insights for prevention and safety

Introduction As fire pits grow in popularity,so do the associated burn injuries.Our study examines pediatric fire pit burns characteristics to raise awareness and promote safety precautions.Methods We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric patients(<21 years)with firepit burns at a tertiary care hospital from 2016 to 2021.Results Eighty-four patients were identified,of whom 70.2%were male,with a median age of 62 months.The median percent total body surface area burned was 2%(interquartile range(IQR)=1-4).Thirty-five(41.7%)patients were admitted and 7(8.3%)underwent grafting.Neck and trunk burns had the highest grafting rates(66%and 33%,respectively).The hands(41.7%)and the lower extremities(27.4%)were the most frequently burned body areas.The leading causes of burns were ashes/hot coals(34.5%),flames(31.0%),and direct contact(25.0%),often resulting from falling into the fire(59.5%)or running or playing in activities near it(26.2%).Thirty-five(41.7%)were admitted for inpatient management,while 49(58.3%)were treated as outpatient.Eleven(13.2%)underwent at least one reconstructive surgery,7(8.4%)had at least one rehabilitation visit,and 65(77.4%)had follow-up clinic visits.The median length of stay was 2 days(IQR=1.0-3.5).The peak months for burns were from August through October(n=40,46.0%),with an increase observed from 10 cases in 2016to 20 cases in 2020.Conclusions Given the significant proportion of firepit burns resulting from unsafe fire behaviors,it is crucial that caretakers are aware of proper firepit safety precautions.Level ofevidence Il.

Small dissymmetry, yet large effects on the transport propertiesof electrolytes based on imide salts: Consequences on performancein Li-ion batteries

To gain better insight into the influence of the anion size and symmetry on the transport properties and thermal stability of an electrolyte based on lithium(fluorosulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide(FTFSI)salt,we performed the physical and electrochemical characterization of an electrolyte based on FTFSI incorporated in standard binary(3 EC/7 EMC)and ternary(EC/PC/3 DMC)alkylcarbonate mixtures.By applying the Jones-Dole-Kaminsky(JDK),Eyring and Arrhenius empirical models to the electrolyte viscosity we show that the activation enthalpy and entropy energy barriers(ΔH≠,ΔS≠)for viscous flow are between 12 and 15 kJ·mol^(-1).They are strongly dependent on the solvent nature and are significantly lower than their symmetric anions LiFSI and LiTFSI(19-20 kJ·mol^(-1))in the binary mixture.Furthermore,the hydrodynamic radius,rs,calculated by JDK,and the ionicity behavior illustrated by the Walden role,showed that the FTFSI anion is outside the solvation sphere(rs>0.6 nm)which is smaller in the case of an EC/EMC solvent base.In the 3 EC/7 EMC solvent mixture,LiFTFSI is less conductive than in the ternary mixture i.e.,σ_(max)=8.9 mS cm^(-1) at C_(max)=1.1 mol L^(-1) for 3 EC/7 EMC and,σ_(max)=10.5 mS cm^(-1) at max=0.7 mol L^(-1) for EC/PC/3 DMC,due to a strong solvation and a greater association of FTFSI ions in the binary solvent mixture.The thermal stability of FTFSI based electrolytes was determined by the shift of the evaporation temperature of the volatile solvents(DMC,EMC)in the presence of salt,towards the higher temperatures.This feature is visible on the thermograms obtained by DSC both with the liquid electrolyte and with charged LMO cathodes in presence of electrolytes.The consequences of these properties on the electrochemical behavior of a graphite(Gr)half-cell,a lithium metal(Li)anode and a manganese lithium oxide(LMO)cathode demonstrated on the one hand the formation of a thick solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)on graphite that consumed a significant amount of lithium i.e.,18%of total capacity of the f

The chemical composition of PM_(2.5) at two sites in Lebanon,a country in the East Mediterranean-Middle East region,is investigated in the spring and summer seasons.The average PM_(2.5) concentrations were of(29±16)μg/m 3 for Beirut urban site and(32±14)μg/m 3 for Beirut suburban site.This study showed that the geographic location of the East Mediterranean region,such as its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and the dust storm intrusion are a significant contributor to the high PM levels from natural sources,which cannot be mitigated,rendering the PM_(2.5) WHO annual Air Quality guideline unattainable due to high natural background,which also applies to the entire Middle East region.Turkey and Eastern Europe are the dominant origin of air masses throughout our sampling days,suggesting the long-range transport as an important potential contributor to the high observed concentrations of V,Ni,and sulfate in this region most probably in other East Mediterranean countries than Lebanon too.Main local sources determined through the chemical speciation including organics are road transport,resuspension of dust and diesel private generators.A health risk assessment of airborne metals was performed and the carcinogenic risk for all the metals exceeded by 42(adults)and 14(children)times the acceptable risk level(10^(-6))at both sites.Vanadium was the predominant carcinogenic metal,emphasizing the need to replace energy production with cleaner energy on a regional level and highlighting the severe impact of air pollution on the health of inhabitants in this region’s main cities.

Adaptive overheating cover for a solar water heater

Solar water heating systems have been widely used around the world.However,exposure to sunlight can overheat the device,affecting the efficiency and durability of the system.This article proposes an adaptive deck controller that protects the system from overheating without compromising the availability of domestic hot water.Solar water heaters are considered one of the most effective ways to reduce a home’s carbon footprint.They are a renewable energy source that reduces reliance on fossil fuels and saves money.Thus,this paper aims to develop a dynamic cover for solar water heaters that prevent overheating using an artificial neural network to optimize the design of control systems.Based on a self-organizing map network,the controller automatically adjusts the temperature of the solar collector through a fabric screen covering the main subsystems,depending on many parameters such as weather conditions,collector temperature and domestic hot water depending on demand.A suggested technique of four different shade percentages(0%,20%,25%or 32%)can avoid overheating and maintain the amount of hot water the home needs.Although renewable energy is free,proper controls are required to ensure maximum efficiency or proper use.In addition,the control of renewable energy leads to longer service life.

Two sides of the same coin: tyrosine kinase inhibitionin cancer and neurodegeneration

Cancer and neurodegeneration include a group of diseases that are mechanistically distinct but may share common therapeutic targets.Autophagy is a common quality control mechanism shared by mitotic and post-mitotic cells and it can be exploited to accelerate clearance of unwanted oncogenes and reduce accumulation of toxic proteins in cancer and neurodegeneration,respectively.Tyrosine kinase inhibition is a therapeutically relevant strategy that can induce autophagy, leading to normal cell survival. This article provides insights into how tyrosine kinase inhibition is clinically used to arrest mitotic cell division and tumor growth, and may promote survival of post-mitotic neurons in neurodegeneration.

Given the frequent co-existence of an aggressive tumor and underlying chronic liver disease,the management of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients requires experienced multidisciplinary team discussion.Moreover,imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis,staging,restaging,and surveillance of HCC.Currently,imaging assessment of HCC entails the assessment of qualitative characteristics which are prone to inter-reader variability.Radiomics is an emerging field that extracts high-dimensional mineable quantitative features that cannot be assessed visually with the naked eye from medical imaging.The main potential applications of radiomic models in HCC are to predict histology,response to treatment,genetic signature,recurrence,and survival.Despite the encouraging results to date,there are challenges and limitations that need to be overcome before radiomics implementation in clinical practice.The purpose of this article is to review the main concepts and challenges pertaining to radiomics,and to review recent studies and potential applications of radiomics in HCC.

PM_(2.5)characterization of primary and secondary organic aerosols in two urban-industrial areas in the East Mediterranean

Primary and secondary organic aerosols in PM_(2.5)were investigated over a one-year campaign at Zouk Mikael and Fiaa,Lebanon.The n-alkanes concentrations were quite similar at both sites(26-29 ng/m^(3))and mainly explained by anthropogenic emissions rather than natural ones.The concentrations of total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs)were nearly three times higher at Zouk Mikael(2.56 ng/m^(3))compared to Fiaa(0.95 ng/m^(3)),especially for indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene linked to the presence of the power plant.A characteristic indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene/(indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene+benzo[g,h,i]perylene)ratio in the range0.8-1.0 was determined for heavy fuel oil combustion from the power plant.Fatty acids and hopanes were also investigated and were assigned to cooking activities and vehicular emissions respectively.Phthalates were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at Zouk and Fiaa(106.88 and 97.68 ng/m^(3) respectively).Moreover,the biogenic secondary aerosols revealed higher concentrations in summer.The total terpene concentration varied between 131 ng/m^(3) at Zouk Mikael in winter to 469 ng/m3 at Fiaa in summer.Additionnally,the concentrations of the dicarboxylic acids especially for adipic and phthalic acids were more influenced by anthropogenic sources.The analysis of molecular markers and diagnostic ratios indicated that the sites were strongly affected by anthropogenic sources such as waste open burning,diesel private generators,cooking activities,road transport,power plant,and industrial emissions.Moreover,results showed different pattern during winter and summer seasons.Whereas,higher concentrations of biogenic markers were clearly encountered during the summer period.

Thermo-Mechanical Simulation of Self-Heating of a High-Power Diode Made of Ti_(3)SiC_(2)(MAX) Phase-on-4H-SiC Substrate

The fact that traditional semiconductors have almost reached their performance limits in high power applications,is leading to failure in high power devices.This failure results from self-heating effects,leading to higher temperature and a breakdown of the electrical contact.The good thermal and mechanical properties of 4 H-SiC and Ti_(3)SiC_(2) and their good performance at high temperatures make them good candidates for high power applications.In order to improve the performance of electrical contacts,a thermo-mechanical simulation was carried out using the finite element method to study the self-heating effects in a high power PN diode made of a 4 H-SiC substrate with a Ti_(3)SiC_(2) electrical contact and Al_(3)Ti metallization.The three-dimensional model took into account the temperature dependency of several thermal and mechanical properties of the different materials to improve calculation accuracy.To simulate the self-heating,the power loss in the diode was calculated from the corresponding direct I-V characteristic.In addition,the interfacial thermal resistances(ITR)between the different layers were varied and studied in the thermo-mechanical investigation,in sequence to determine their effects on the heat dissipation and the resulting stresses in the model.The results show that for realistic ITR values,the ITR barely affects heat diffusion mechanical stresses of the model.Whereas,ITR may cause serious problem to the functionality and the efficiency of some electronic components.On the other hand,extremely large ITR leads to a decrease in the thermal stress in the diode.Good control on the ITR may help to improve the performance of high-power devices in the future,in addition to providing more efficient electrical contacts.
