A number of circulating and imaging biomarkers are robustly associated with cardiovascular （CV） risk. The overall expectation from a biomarker in the erectile dysfunction （ED） setting is to enhance the optimal management of a man with this disorder but no clinical atherosclerosis. Evidence demonstrating that these biomarkers enhance risk prediction for individuals with ED is at this stage still limited for most of them. A better identification of the subsets of the ED population that require further risk stratification, as well as the initiation of randomized trials that will formally test the ability of biomarkers to predict CV risk, could make biomarker-guided prevention an attainable goal.

Erectile dysfunction （ED） has been found to frequently precedes the onset of coronary artery disease （CAD）, representing an early marker of subclinical vascular disease, included CAD. Its recognition is, therefore, a ＂window opportunity＂ to prevent a coronary event by aggressive treatment of cardiovascular risk factors. The artery size hypothesis （ASH） has been proposed as a putative mechanism to explain the relationship between ED and CAD. Since atherosclerosis is a systemic disorder all major vascular beds should be affected to the same extent. However, symptoms at different points in the system rarely become evident at the same time. This is likely the result of smaller vessels （i.e. the penile artery） being able to less well tolerate the same amount of plaque when compared with larger ones （i.e. the coronary artery）. If true, ED will develop before CAD. We present a case in which ED developed after a coronary event yet before a coronary recurrence potentially representing a late marker of vascular progression. Reasons for this unusual sequence are discussed as they might still fit the ASH.

AIM:To determine the one-year outcomes of resveratrol oral supplement in patients suffering from wet age-related macular degeneration(AMD).METHODS:Fifty naïve and previously untreated patients suffering from wet AMD,were randomly assigned in two subgroups of 25 patients *** the participants were treated with 3 monthly intravitreal injections of 2.0 mg aflibercept(IAIs)followed by injections“according to need”,while in one group the patients also received daily two tablets of resveratrol oral *** to treatment initiation,a complete ophthalmological examination,including best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and contrast sensitivity evaluation,optical coherence tomography(OCT)scans,fundus autofluorescence(FAF),fluorescein angiography,indocyanine green angiography,and OCT angiography(OCTA),was performed to every participant,while all of them completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS)questionnaire,in order to assess their quality of life(QoL)*** patients were assessed monthly for 1y with FAF,and OCT or OCTA;the main endpoints were the number IAIs,the changes in BCVA,in contrast sensitivity,and in patients’QoL ***:No significant differences were present between the groups regarding the baseline demographic and clinical *** the 12-month period,a similar number of IAIs was applied in both groups(4.52±1.00 vs 4.28±0.90,P=0.38),while the rest of the clinical data also did not differ significantly after the completion of the study ***,for HADS Depression(11.88±2.51 vs 8.28±1.54,P<0.001)and HADS Anxiety(11.92±2.52 vs 7.76±1.51,P<0.001)questionnaires values,the score was significantly better in patients who received resveratrol ***,a statistically significant difference was detected in the mean change from baseline values of contrast sensitivity(0.17±0.19 vs 0.35±0.24,P=0.005),HADS Depression(0.08±1.38 vs-3.88±1.48,P<0.001),and HADS Anxiety(0.36±1.98 vs-5.12±2.70,P<0.001)scores,in favour of the pati

Free-space optics naturally offers multiple-channel communications and sensing exploitable in many applications. The different optical beams will, however, generally be overlapping at the receiver, and, especially with atmospheric turbulence or other scattering or aberrations, the arriving beam shapes may not even be known in advance. We show that such beams can be still separated in the optical domain, and simultaneously detected with negligible cross-talk, even if they share the same wavelength and polarization, and even with unknown arriving beam shapes. The kernel of the adaptive multibeam receiver presented in this work is a programmable integrated photonic processor that is coupled to free-space beams through a two-dimensional array of optical antennas. We demonstrate separation of beam pairs arriving from different directions, with overlapping spatial modes in the same direction, and even with mixing between the beams deliberately added in the path. With the circuit’s optical bandwidth of more than 40 nm, this approach offers an enabling technology for the evolution of FSO from single-beam to multibeam space-division multiplexed systems in a perturbed environment, which has been a game-changing transition in fiber-optic systems.

Breast metastases from gastric cancer are extremely rare. A case report of a 37-year-old female with breast inflammatory invasion and ascites is described. Breast biopsy revealed carcinomatous invasion of the lymphatics from adenocarcinoma cells with signet-ring features. Estrogen （ER） and progesterone receptors （PR） and c-erb-B2 were negative. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a prepyloric ulcerative mass. Histopathologic examination of the lesion showed infiltration from a highgrade adenocarcinoma, identical with that of the breast. Immunostaining was positive for cytokeratins CK-7 and CK-20 and CEA and negative for ER and PR. Ascitic fluid cytology was positive for adenocarcinoma cells. Mammography was not diagnostic. Abdominal CT scanning revealed large ovarian masses suggestive of metastases （Krukenberg＇s tumor）. A cisplatin-based regimen was given but no objective response was observed. The patient died six months after initial diagnosis. A review of the literature is performed.

AIM To evaluate the utility of fecal calprotectin(FC) in predicting relapse and endoscopic activity during follow-up in an inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) *** All FC measurements that were obtained during a 3-year period from patients with inflammatory bowel disease in clinical remission were identified. Data regarding the short-term(6 mo) course of the disease were extracted from the medical files. Exclusion criteria were defined as:(1) An established flare of the disease at the time of FC measurement,(2) Loss to follow up within 6 mo from baseline FC measurement, and,(3) Insufficient data on file. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate whether baseline FC measurement could predict the short term clinical relapse and/or the presence of mucosal *** We included 149 [Crohn's disease(CD) = 113, Ulcerative colitis(UC) = 36, male = 77] IBD patients in our study. Within the determined 6-month period post-FC measurement, 47(31.5%) had a disease flare. Among 76 patients who underwent endoscopy, 39(51.3%) had mucosal healing. Baseline FC concentrations were significantly higher in those who had clinical relapse compared to those who remained in remission during follow up(481.0 μg/g, 286.0-600.0 vs 89.0, 36.0-180.8, P < 0.001). The significant predictive value of baseline median with IQR FC for clinical relapse was confirmed by multivariate Cox analysis [HR for 100μg/g: 1.75(95%CI: 1.28-2.39), P = 0.001]. Furthermore, lower FC baseline values significantly correlated to the presence of mucosal healing in endoscopy(69.0 μg/g, 30.0-128.0 vs 481.0, 278.0-600.0, in those with mucosal inflammation, median with IQR, P < 0.001). We were able to extract cut-off values for FC concentration with a high sensitivity and specificity for predicting clinical relapse(261 μg/g with AUC = 0.901, sensitivity 87.2%, specificity 85.3%, P < 0.001) or mucosal healing(174 μg/g with AUC = 0.956, sensitivity 91.9%, specificity 87.2%, P < 0.001). This paper presents a novel synthesis of well characterized nanoporous materials. The development of mesoporous TiO2 with the use of crosslinked polymer network as structure and surface texture directing agent is reported in this study. Randomly cross-linked DMAEMA-50-PEGMA-50-EGDMA1 was synthesized by radical polymerisation to be used as removable scaffold. The resulting materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synthesized oxides morphology was strongly influenced by the polymer network used as removable scaffold. The modified materials exhibited a narrower pore size distribution and marginally higher specific surface area compared to the unmodified samples. The scaffold cross-linking ratio was also found to have a significant effect on the synthesized materials polymorph. The modification has a strong effect on the titania polymorph as the anatase-rutile transformation was observed only for the modified titania samples.

Titanium was used in the present work as the test metal for the first ultrasonic corrosion anodization (UCA) study, because of its important photonics and biomedical applications. The electrochemical cell design was implemented and tested under various experimental conditions combinations (e.g. electrolyte concentration, duration, temperature, ultra-sound presence or absence, oxygen presence, etc) in order to investigate the effect of those parameters in the cracks propagation in Ti-foils. It was found that an increase of cracks takes place when oxygen is provided in the electrolyte solution and when ultrasound is applied. The results presented in the current study could be exploitable towards design of materials having dendritic morphologies, applicable in a wide range of processes from photovoltaics to biocompatible materials.
