Global, regional, and cladistic patterns of variation in climatic niche breadths in terrestrial elapid snakes

We obtai ned geo-refere need occurre nee and climatic data from in dividual localities for 59 species of terrestrial elapid snakes, used phylogenetic generalized least squares regression to investigate spatial and cladistic patter ns of variation in climatic niche breadths, and compared patter ns within and across regions and clades to see if they parallel or differ from each other. Specifically, we test (1) whether a species' climatic niche breadth on a given niche axis relates to its position along that axis, and to its climatic niche breadth on another niche axis, and (2) whether variation in niche breadths among species is explained by within-locality variation in climatic conditions or by among-locality variation. We found that:(1) there is an overall global patter n, and patter ns in individual regi ons or clades gen erally parallel each other and global patter ns;(2) species in wanner environments have narrower temperature niche breadths (TNBs);(3) precipitation niche breadth (PNB) and position are positively related;⑷ TNB and PNB are not related;and ⑸ within-locality variation in climatic conditions explains most variation in TNBs, whereas among-locality variation explains most variation in PNBs. Our results are consistent with those reported for lizards of the families Phrynosomatidae and Varanidae, con firm the importance of withi n-locality n iche breadth to species n iche breadth, and show a more im porta nt role of amon g-locality n iche breadth in affecting species niche breadth in terrestrial elapids than in lizards.

CONSPECTUS:Perovskite solar cells(PSCs)have,in recent years,become one of the most in-depth photovoltaic materials in many different disciplines due to their long-range charge carrier diffusion lengths,strong light absorption,easy tuning of the band gaps,low defect density,and solution processability.The power conversion efficiency(PCE)of single-junction PSCs has reached a certified value of 25.5%,which has caught up with or even surpassed traditional photovoltaic technologies,such as silicon(Si)solar cells,thin film solar cell,etc.In addition to the performance of PSCs comparable to traditional photovoltaic technology,its biggest feature is that it can be prepared by a solution method.The preparation process of the solution method simplify the film preparation process and greatly reduce the preparation cost.In addition,the solution method provides a favorable option for the energy supply of flexible wearable devices in the future.

Oil spilled on the sea ice surface in the Bohai Sea of China is studied through the field measurements of the reflectance of a simulated sea ice-oil film mixed pixel. The reflection characteristics of sea ice and oil film are also analyzed. It is found that the mixed pixel of sea ice and oil film is a linear mixed pixel. The means of extracting sea ice pixels containing oil film is presented using a double-band ratio oil-film sea-ice index（DROSI） and a normalized difference oil-film sea-ice index（NDOSI） through the analysis of the reflectance curves of the sea iceoil film pixel for different ratios of oil film. The area proportion of the oil film in the sea ice-oil film pixel can be accurately estimated by the average reflectance of the band of 1 610–1 630 nm, and the volume of the spilled oil can be further estimated. The method of the sea ice-oil film pixel extraction and the models to estimate the proportion of oil film area in the sea ice-oil film pixel can be applied to the oil spill monitoring of the ice-covered area in the Bohai Sea using multispectral or hyperspectral remote sensing images in the shortwave infrared band（1 500–1 780 nm）.

Attributable deaths of liver cancer in China

Objective:There is little information about contributions of the well-known risk factors to the liver cancer burden.We conducted a comparative study to estimate the liver cancer burden attributable to major risk factors.Methods:Liver cancer deaths for adults were estimated from 978 county-level surveillance points in China in2014.Risk factors were identified from the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the World Cancer Research Fund International.Population attributable fraction(PAF)by age,sex,and province was calculated using multiple formulas.Results:In total,72.4%of liver cancer deaths could be attributable to the studied risk factors.Hepatitis B virus(HBV)was responsible for the largest fraction of liver cancer burden in both genders(PAF=55.6%in males,PAF=46.5%in females).PAFs for liver cancer burden attributable to smoking(15.7%vs.4.8%),and alcohol drinking(10.3%vs.1.6%)were significantly higher in males than in females.The burden of HBV-attributable deaths was the highest in Qinghai province.Conclusions:HBV still contributes to the majority of liver cancer burden than any other risk factors.Targeted preventive measures should be implemented based on the degree of contributions of risk factors to liver cancer deaths.

AIM: To investigate the ocular surface microbiome profile of patients with fungal keratitis(FK) through bacterial 16 S r DNA sequencing. METHODS: The swab samples were collected from 8 patients with FK(Group 1 from the corneal ulcer, Group 2 from the conjunctival sac of the infected eyes, and Group 3 from the conjunctival sac of the fellow eyes) and 10 healthy eyes(Group 4 from the conjunctival sac). Bacterial 16 S rDNA V4-V5 region sequencing was performed to characterize the bacterial communities on the ocular surfaces of the patients with FK. RESULTS: Our metagenomic data showed that 97% of the sequence reads were categorized into 245 distinct bacterial genera, with 67.75±7.79 genera detected in Group 1, 73.80±13.44 in Group 2, 74.57±14.14 in Group 3, and 89.60±27.49 in Group 4. Compared with the healthy eyes(Group 4), both infected(Groups 1 and 2) and fellow eyes(Group 3) of the patients with FK showed reduced bacterial diversity and altered ocular surface microbiota compositions, with lower abundance of Corynebacterium and Staphylo coccus and higher abundances of Pseudomonas, Achromobacter, Caulobacter and Psychrobacter. CONCLUSION: Our report depicts the altered ocular surface bacterial community structures both in the affected and fellow eyes of patients with FK. These changes may contribute to the pathogenesis of FK or the increased risk for FK.

Background Treatment duration of wrist-ankle acupuncture(WAA)is uncertain for post-thyroidectomy pain relief.Objective This study evaluated the effect of different WAA treatment duration on post-operative pain relief and other discomforts associated with thyroidectomy.Design,setting,participants and intervention This randomized controlled trial was conducted at a single research site in Guangzhou,China.A total of 132 patients receiving thyroidectomy were randomly divided into the control group(sham WAA,30 min)and three intervention groups(group 1:WAA,30 min;group 2:WAA,45 min;group 3:WAA,60 min),with group allocation ratio of 1:1:1:1.Acupuncture was administered within 1 hour of leaving the operating room.Outcomes and measures Primary outcome was patients’pain at the surgical site assessed by visual analogue scale(VAS)at the moment after acupuncture treatment(post-intervention).Secondary outcomes included the patients’pain VAS scores at 6,12,24,48 and 72 h after the thyroidectomy,the 40-item Quality of Recovery(QoR-40)score,the grade of post-operative nausea and vomiting(PONV),and the use of additional analgesic therapy.Results The adjusted mean difference(AMD)in VAS scores from baseline to post-intervention in group 1 was-0.89(95%confidence interval[CI],-1.02 to-0.76).The decrease in VAS score at post-intervention was statistically significant in group 1 compared to the control group(AMD,-0.43;95%CI,-0.58 to-0.28;P<0.001),and in groups 2 and 3 compared to group 1(group 2 vs group 1:AMD,-0.65;95%CI,-0.81 to-0.48;P<0.001;group 3 vs group 1:AMD,-0.66;95%CI,-0.86 to-0.47;P<0.001).The VAS scores in the four groups converged beyond 24 h after the operation.Fewer patients in group 2 and group 3 experienced PONV in the first 24 h after operation.No statistical differences were measured in QoR-40 score and the number of patients with additional analgesic therapy.Conclusion Compared with the 30 min intervention,WAA treatment with longer needle retention time(45 or 60 min)had an advantage in pain relief within 6 h after su

Sustainable preparation of graphene-analogue boron nitride by ball-milling for adsorption of organic pollutants

The method of fabricating low-cost adsorbents with high activity and durability via a convenient and ecofriendly procedure is of great importance to wastewater treatment. Herein, a high-efficient mechanical exfoliation strategy was proposed to facilely prepare few-layered graphene-analogue boron nitride(BN) via a one-step non-organic solvent assisted wet ball mill procedure. Ball-milling treatment increased the specific surface area of BN 3.5-fold by reducing the thickness to ~3 layers with 45 min. The exfoliated BN exhibited strikingly improved sorption performance to organic contaminants with around 124% and 116% increased removal efficiency respectively for oxytetracycline(OTC) and Rhodamine B(RhB) as compared to the bulk BN. Batches sorption experiments showed that the sorption processes were thermodynamic endothermic, and well fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm equation. The π-π stacking interaction, hydrophobic effect and electrostatic interaction were proposed as the dominated sorption mechanism. In addition, no significant decline in adsorptive removal ability for the sorbent after 5 times recycling. The results indicate that the ball-milling exfoliation is a fast, green,sustainable and promising strategy for synthesis of highly potent BN based two-dimensional layered adsorbents.

The brown planthopper(BPH)and striped stem borer(SSB)are the most devastating insect pests in rice(Oryza sativa)producing areas.Screening for endogenous resistant genes is the most practical strategy for rice insect-resistance breeding.Forty-five mutants showing high re-sistance against BPH were identified in a rice T-DNA in-sertion population(11,000 putative homozygous lines)after 4 years of large-scale field BPH-resistance phenotype screening.Detailed analysis showed that deficiency of rice mitochondrial outer membrane protein 64(OM64)gene resulted in increased resistance to BPH.Mitochondrial outer membrane protein 64 protein is located in the outer mitochondrial membrane by subcellular localization and its deficiency constitutively activated hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)signaling,which stimulated antibiosis and tolerance to BPH.The om64 mutant also showed enhanced resist-ance to SSB,a chewing insect,which was due to promotion of Jasmonic acid biosynthesis and related responses.Im-portantly,om64 plants presented no significant changes in rice yield-related characters.This study confirmed OM64 as a negative regulator of rice herbivore resistance through regulating H2O2 production.Mitochondrial outer membrane protein 64 is a potentially efficient candidate to improve BPH and SSB resistance through gene deletion.Why the om64 mutant was resistant to both piercing-sucking and chewing insects via a gene deficiency in mitochondria is discussed.

ZrCoSb-based half-Heusler(HH)compounds are among the most promising thermoelectric(TE)materials for high-temperature power generation.Oxidation resistance is one of the key issues for realizing the practical application of TE materials for long-term service in the ambient working environment.In this work,the oxidation behavior of Zr_(0.5)Hf_(0.5)CoSb_(0.8)Sn_(0.2)(ZHCSS)half-Heusler is systematically studied in the service temperature range from 873 to 1073 K.It is revealed that three typical layers of oxidation products tend to form on the surface of HH sample,namely,the dense oxide layer(DOL)composed of(Zr,Hf)O_(2) and CoSb,the alternate oxide layer(AOL)composed of repeated(Zr,Hf)O_(2) and CoSb_(2)O_(6)/Co_(3)O_(4),and the CoSb layer between the DOL and AOL.The mass gain during oxidation is mainly caused by the rapid growth of AOL,which is controlled by the outward diffusion of Zr/Hf and the inward diffusion of oxygen.The formation of a continuous CoSb layer and DOL is found beneficial to block the outward diffusion of Zr/Hf.Based on the analysis of the dominant factors on the outward and inward diffusions as well as the reaction activation energy,a simple approach is proposed to improve the oxidation resistance of Zr_(0.5)Hf_(0.5)CoSb_(0.8)Sn_(0.2)by pre-oxidizing the sample in low oxygen pressure to form the dense(Zr,Hf)O_(2) and CoSb layers as oxidation protecting and/or diffusion blocking layers.The oxidation test shows the effectiveness of such pre-oxidation on the formation and growth of the AOL and therefore on improving the service stability of Zr_(0.5)Hf_(0.5)CoSb_(0.8)Sn_(0.2)at high temperatures in the air.
