Some semelparous organisms in nature mate as many times as they can in a single reproductive episode before death,while most iteroparous species including humans avoid such suicidal reproductive behavior.Animals naturally pursue more sex and the possible fatal consequence of excessive sex must be orchestrated by negative feedback signals in iteroparous species,yet very little is known about the regulatory mechanisms.Here we used Drosophila male sexual behavior as a model system to study how excessive sex may kill males and how the nervous system reacts to prevent death by sex.We found that continuous sexual activity by activating the fruitlessexpressing neurons induced a fixed multi-step behavioral pattern ending with male death.We further found negative feedback in the fly brain to prevent suicidal sexual behavior by expression changes of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid,and neuropeptide F.These findings are crucial to understand the molecular underpinnings of how different organisms choose reproductive strategies and balance reproduction and survival.

Most known catalytic dehydration of sugar alcohols such as D-sorbitol and D-mannitol can only produce di-dehydrated forms as major product,but monodehydrated products are also useful chemicals.Moreover,both di-and mono-dehydration demand a high temperature(150℃ or higher),which deserves further attentions.To improve the mono-dehydration efficiency,a series of metal-containing hydrothermal carbonaceous materials(HTC)are prepared as catalyst in this work.Characterization reveals that the composition of preparative solution has a key influence on the morphology of HTC.In transformation of D-sorbitol,all HTC catalysts show low conversions in water regardless of temperature,but much better outputs are obtained in ethanol,especially at a higher temperature.When D-mannitol is selected as substrate,moderate to high conversions are obtained in both water and ethanol.On the other hand,high mono-dehydration selectivity is obtained for both sugar alcohols by using all catalysts.The origin of mono-dehydration selectivity and role of carbon component in catalysis are discussed in association with calculations.This study provides an efficient,mild,eco-friendly,and cost-effective system for mono-dehydration of sugar alcohols,which means a lot to development in new detergents or other fine chemicals.

A significant enhancement of bendability was achieved by the introduction of bimodal microstructure for AZ31B alloy sheets via pre-compression and subsequent annealing(PCA)process.This combined treatment led to the c-axis of the extracted samples that were inclined by 30°to the rolling direction(30°sample)further shifting toward the rolling direction(RD)and resulting in a higher Schmid factor(SF)value of basal slip under the RD tensile stress.Furthermore,the bimodal microstructure that was introduced by the PCA process broke the damage bands(DBs)in the initial hot rolled AZ31B alloy sheets and gave rise to a more uniform strain distribution in the outer tension region of the bending samples,in which the tensile deformation was accommodated by the equally distributed{101^(-)2}tension twinning and basal slip.Consequently,the bimodal microstructure,shifted basal texture and the modification of DBs were responsible for the significant enhancement in the bendability of the AZ31 alloys.

High-performance gas sensing materials operated at room temperature(RT) are attractive for a variety of real-time gas monitoring applications,especially with the excellent durability and flexibility of wearable sensor.The constructing heterostructure is one of the significant approaches in design strategies of sensing materials.This heterostructure effectively increases the active site for improving sensing performance and decreasing energy consumption.Herein,the heterostructure of Au nanoparticles modified CeO_(2)@carbon-quantum-dots(Au/CeO_(2)@CQDs) with a three-dimensional(3D) scaffold structure are successfully synthesized by an effective strategy,which can apply for preparing flexible gas sensor.The gas sensing properties of Au/CeO_(2)@CQDs based on flexible substrate are obtained under long-term repeated NO_(2) exposure at RT.Meanwhile,the long-term mechanical stability of this gas sensing device is also detected after different bending cycles.The Au/CeO_(2)@CQDs based on flexible substrate sensor exhibits excellent performance,including higher sensitivity(47.2),faster response(18 s)and recovery time(22 s) as well as longer-term stability than performance of pure materials.The obtained sensor also reveals outstanding mechanical flexibility,which is only a tiny response fluctuation(8.1%) after 500 bending/relaxing cycles.Therefore,our study demonstrates the enormous potential of this sensing materials for hazardous gas monitoring in future portable and wearable sensing platform.

Supercapacitor is an imminent potential energy storage system,and acts as a booster to the batteries and fuel cells to provide necessary power density.In the last decade,carbon and carbonaceous materials,conducting polymers and transition metal oxide/hydroxide based electrode materials have been made to show a remarkable electrochemical performance.Rare-earth materials have attracted significant research attention as an electrode material for supercapacitor applications based on their physicochemical properties.In this review,rare earth metals,rare earth metal oxides/hydroxides,rare-earth metal chalcogenides,rare-earth metal/carbon composites and rare-earth metal/metal oxide composites based electrode materials are discussed for supercapacitors.We also discuss the energy chemistry of rare-earth metal-based materials.Besides the factors that affect the performance of the electrode materials,their evaluation methods and supercapacitor performances are discussed in details.Finally,the future outlook in rare-earth-based electrode materials is revealed towards its current developments for supercapacitor applications.

Robust and Self-healable Antibiofilm Multilayer Coatings

The infection induced by implantation of biomedical materials may result from the biofilm formation after bacteria attachment.Hence,the antibiofilm surface coating represents a novel technique to improve the antibacterial activity of biomedical materials.The traditional antibiofilm surface coatings exhibited some disadvantages and provided a limited service life.In this work,we used polyethyleneimine grafted 3-maleimidopropionic acid(PEIM)and poly(acrylic acid)grafted 2-furfurylamine(PAAF)to achieve robust and self-healable crosslinked multilayer coatings,employing Layer-by-Layer(LbL)self-assembly technique and Diels-Alder reaction.Then,thiol-terminated poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride)(PAMPTMA-SH)was grafted onto the crosslinked multilayer coating by thiol-ene click reaction to form a novel multilayer coating(PEIM/PAAF)_(10)-PAMPTMA.We found that this coating showed robust and self-healable activity,and significantly inhibited the bacterial growth and biofilm formation after infection with Escherichia coli(E.coli)and Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)by in vitro and in vivo assays for 120 h.In addition,the multilayer coating did not induce significant hemolysis or affect the cell viability of red blood cells.In vivo studies also showed that(PEIM/PAAF)_(10)-PAMPTMA coating efficiently blocked the infiltration of inflammatory cells and gene expression in the mouse skin challenged with E coli or S.aureus.Taken together,these results showed that the prepared multilayer coating exhibited strong antibiofilm activity and provided a new strategy for the application of highly efficient antibiofilm surface coating of biomedical materials.

Accelerated healing of diabetic wound using artificial dermis constructed with adipose stem cells and poly（L-glutamic acid）/ chitosan scaffold

Background Diabetic wound is one of the most serious complications of diabetes mellitus. There are no significantly effective therapies for chronic non-healing diabetes ulcer so far. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of healing impaired wound using artificial dermis constructed with human adipose derived stem cells （ASCs） and poly（L-glutamic acid）/chitosan （PLGA/CS） scaffold in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. Methods ASCs were isolated from fresh human lipoaspirates and expanded ex vivo for three passages, and then cells were seeded onto PLGNCS scaffold to form artificial dermis. Expression of VEGF and TGFI31 by ASCs presented in artificial dermis was determined. The artificial dermis was transplanted to treat the 20 mm ~ 20 mm full-thickness cutaneous wound created on the back of diabetic mice. Wound treated with scaffold alone and without treatment, and wound in normal non-diabetic mice served as control. Results Cells growing within scaffold showed great proliferation potential, depositing abundant collagen matrix. Meanwhile, expression of VEGF and TGF-131 by seeded ASCs maintained at a consistent high level. After treated with ASC based artificial dermis, diabetic wounds exhibited significantly higher healing rate compared with wounds treated with scaffold alone or without treatment. Histological examination also demonstrated an improvement in cutaneous restoration with matrix deposition and organization. Further quantitative analysis showed that there was a significant increase in dermis thickness and collagen content on artificial dermis treated wounds. Conclusion ASC/PLGA artificial dermis can effectively accelerate diabetic wound healing by promoting angiogenic growth factors and dermal collagen synthesis.
