OsPDR20 is an ABCG metal transporter regulating cadmium accumulation in rice

Cadmium(Cd)is a non-essential toxic heavy metal,seriously posing high environmental risks to human health.Digging genetic resources relevant to functional genes is important for understanding the metal absorption and accumulation in crops and bioremediation of Cd-polluted environments.This study investigated a functionally uncharacterized ATP binding cassette transporter G family(ABCG)gene encoding a Pleiotropic Drug Resistance 20(PDR20)type metal transporter which is localized to the plasma membrane of rice.OsPDR20 was transcriptionally expressed in almost all tissues and organs in lifespan and was strongly induced in roots and shoots of young rice under Cd stress.Ectopic expression of OsPDR20 in a yeast mutant ycf1 sensitive to Cd conferred cellular tolerance with less Cd accumulation.Knockdown of OsPDR20 by RNA interference(RNAi)moderately attenuated root/shoot elongation and biomass,with reduced chlorophylls in rice grown under hydroponic medium with 2 and 10μmol/L Cd,but led to more Cd accumulation.A field trial of rice grown in a realistic Cd-contaminated soil(0.40 mg/kg)showed that RNAi plants growth and development were also compromised compared to wild-type(WT),with smaller panicles and lower spikelet fertility but little effect on yield of grains.However,OsPDR20 suppression resulted in unexpectedly higher levels of Cd accumulation in rice straw including lower leaves and culm and grain.These results suggest that OsPDR20 is actively involved in Cd accumulation and homeostasis in rice crops.The increased Cd accumulation in the RNAi plants has the potential application in phytoremediation of Cd-polluted wetland soils.

Comparison of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in the treatment of hypercoagulability secondary to traumatic infection

Purpose: To compare the effects and side-effects of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied with traumatic infection. Methods: Thirty-six patients with post-traumatic infections in our hospital intensive care center were diagnosed with hypercoagulability from February 2012 to February 2013. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. In group F (18 patients), the patients were treated with fondaparinux sodium, 2.5 mg, 1/d for 11 d. In group L (18 patients), the patients were treated with low molecular weight heparin, 4100 U, 1/12 h for 11 d. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, bleeding events and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and mortality of two groups after anticoagulation therapy were analyzed. Fibrinogen, D-dimer level and activity of antithrombin III were measured by the coagulation analyzer. Results: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, MODS incidence and mortality were not significantly different between the two groups. The rate of bleeding evens in group F was lower than group L ( p 0.05). D-dimer was significantly decreased after anticoagulant therapy for 5 d ( p 0.05). Conclusion: Fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin can effectively improve coagulopathy in patients with traumatic infection. Compared with low molecular weight heparin, fondaparinux sodium may reduce the risk of bleeding events in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied by traumatic infection.

Theoretical dispersion curves for borehole real-valued wave modes in vertically transverse isotropic formations

The dispersion curves of real-valued modes in a fluid-filled borehole are widely used in acoustic well logging.The accurate dispersion curves are the precondition of theoretical analysis and inversion process.Generally,these curves can be obtained by solving the conventional dispersion equation for isotropic formations and most vertically transverse isotropy(VTI)formations.However,if the real-valued solutions exist when the radial wavenumbers for the formation quasi-P and quasi-S equals to each other,the existed methods based on the conventional dispersion equation could lead to incorrect results for some VTI formations.Few studies have focused on the influence of these real-valued solutions on dispersion curve extraction.To remove these real-valued solutions,we have proposed a modified dispersion equation and its corresponding solving process.When solving the dispersion equation,the Scholte wave velocity of VTI formation at high frequency is used as the initial guess.The two synthetic examples including fast and slow VTI formations validate that these real-valued solutions do not contribute to the wavefield,and the new dispersion curve extraction method is suitable for all kinds of VTI formations.Consequently,the method can provide reliable dispersion curves for both theoretical analysis and anisotropic parameters inversion in VTI formations.

Investigations of entrainment characteristics and shear-layer vortices evolution in an axisymmetric rear variable area bypass injector

In this study,firstly,for the axisymmetric RVABI,the change-rule of adverse pressure gradient caused by radial velocity during the transition of internal flow mode in variable geometry is summarized,and a Bypass Ratio(BR) iterative algorithm based on the empirical correlation of non-equilibrium pressure is proposed.The algorithm can estimate the nonlinear relationship between area ratio and BR,with an error range falling below 6.5%.Then,we discuss the favorable effect of uniform mixing on the thrust augmentation of mixed exhaust under variable BR conditions.From this point of view,the characteristics of vortices evolution in different shear strength jets are compared,to clarify the effect of variable cycle parameters on jet mixing.As the results suggest,when ■ is as low as 0.22,the K-H disturbance is of high-frequency wavelet property,and it is difficult to induce large-scale spanwise vortices.The macro migrations of fluid elements in span wise vortices and the diffusion effect caused by edge tearing is weak,which is not conducive to the energy exchange between the two streams.However,the low ■ jet will also correspondingly weaken the viscous dissipation effect of vortices.It is concluded that the dissipation level is proportional to the 2.31 power of the ■.

Dual Strengthened Control of Recrystallization Behavior on CVCDE Magnesium Alloy Containing Characteristic Structure

Various characteristic structures in typical magnesium alloys,including dislocation cells,substructures and twins,have an important influence on the dynamic recrystallization behavior,and the DRX(dynamic recrystallization)behavior is closely related to the grain refinement and texture weakening of the hot deformed structure.Therefore,this study reveals the influence of the above characteristic structures on the dynamic recrystallization behavior of magnesium alloys,which have great significance for regulating the high-performance hot deformed microstructure of magnesium alloys and optimizing the macro mechanical properties.In this study,continuous variable channel direct extrusion(CVCDE)magnesium alloy was prepared by CVCDE,and its macro mechanical properties including hardness and uniaxial tension were characterized.The thermoplastic deformation behavior and texture evolution of magnesium alloy with characteristic structure were analyzed by electron back-scattering diffraction technology.It is found that the dislocation recombination was realized by deformation mechanism(slip,climb and cross slip),the formation of grain substructure in coarse grains and the induction of recrystallization by twins promote the recrystallization behavior in hot deformed structures more adequate,which effectively improves the degree of microstructure refinement and deformation uniformity.

Risk Assessment and Prevention of Spontaneous Preterm Birth

Preterm parturition is the consequence of pathological signals that activate the common pathway of parturition and considered as a syndrome.Many risk factors for spontaneous preterm birth(sPTB)have been identified.Two significant risk factors for sPTB are history of prior sPTB and short cervical length at midtrimester.17 hydroxyprogesterone caproate,vaginal progesterone,cerclage,and pessary have all been studied for prevention of sPTB.Difference in patient populations likely contributes to the conflicting study results.Further studies are needed to establish strategies in prevention of sPTB in singleton as well as multiple pregnancies.

Characteristics of coal resources in China and statistical analysis and preventive measures for coal mine accidents

In the process of green and smart mine construction under the context of carbon neutrality,China's coal safety situation has been continuously improved in recent years.In order to recognize the development of coal production in China and prepare for future monitoring and prevention of safety incidents,this study mainly elaborated on the basic situation of coal resources and national mining accidents over the past five years(2017-2021),from four dimensions(accident level,type,region,and time),and then proposed the preventive measures based on accident statistical laws.The results show that the storage of coal resources has obvious geographic characteristics,mainly concentrated in the Midwest,with coal resources in Shanxi and Shaanxi accounting for about 49.4%.The proportion of coal consumption has dropped from 70.2%to 56%between 2011 and 2021,but still accounts for more than half of the all.Meanwhile,the accident-prone areas are positively correlated with the amount of coal production.Among different levels of coal mine accidents,general accidents had the highest number of accidents and deaths,with 692 accidents and 783 deaths,accounting for 87.6%and 54.64%respectively.The frequency of roof,gas,and transportation accidents is relatively high,and the number of single fatalities caused by gas accidents is the largest,about 4.18.In terms of geographical distribution of accidents,the safety situation in Shanxi Province is the most severe.From the time distribution of coal mine accidents,the accidents mainly occurred in July and August,and rarely occurred in February and December.Finally,the"4+4"safety management model is proposed,combining the statistical results with coal production in China.Based on the existing health and safety management systems,the manage-ments are divided into four sub-categories,and more specific measures are suggested.

Recent advances in nanomedicines for the treatment of ischemic stroke

Ischemic stroke is a cerebrovascular disease normally caused by interrupted blood supply to the brain.Ischemia would initiate the cascade reaction consisted of multiple biochemical events in the damaged areas of the brain,where the ischemic cascade eventually leads to cell death and brain infarction.Extensive researches focusing on different stages of the cascade reaction have been conducted with the aim of curing ischemic stroke.However,traditional treatment methods based on antithrombotic therapy and neuroprotective therapy are greatly limited for their poor safety and treatment efficacy.Nanomedicine provides new possibilities for treating stroke as they could improve the pharmacokinetic behavior of drugs in vivo,achieve effective drug accumulation at the target site,enhance the therapeutic effect and meanwhile reduce the side effect.In this review,we comprehensively describe the pathophysiology of stroke,traditional treatment strategies and emerging nanomedicines,summarize the barriers and methods for transporting nanomedicine to the lesions,and illustrate the latest progress of nanomedicine in treating ischemic stroke,with a view to providing a new feasible path for the treatment of cerebral ischemia.

Dear Editor,I’m Dr.Dan li from the Department of Suzhou Kowloon Hospital,Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine,Suzhou,Jiangsu Province,China.I’m writing to present an interesting case.It is well known that retained subretinal perfluorocarbon droplets are a possible surgical complication after intravitreal injection of perfluorocarbon liquid(PFCL).The retinal neuroepithelial layer and retinal pigment epithelial layer cannot be bonded where it located.The retina is in a state of detachment.When the patient is lying on the bed,due to the action of gravity,the subretinal PFCL will gradually shift to the posterior pole,especially the macular region.Subfoveal PFCL droplet may seriously affect the visual function.Clinicians are committed to finding a method of removing subfoveal PFCL with less damage.We recently encountered a case of this complication,reported here.
