Modeling methane dynamics in three wetlands in Northeastern China by using the CLM-Microbe model

Wetlands account for up to 70%of the natural source of methane(CH_(4))in terrestrial ecosystems on a global scale.Soil microbes are the ultimate producers and biological consumers of CH_(4)in wetlands.Therefore,simulating microbial mechanisms of CH_(4)production and consumptionwould improve the predictability of CH_(4)flux in wetland ecosystems.In this study,we applied a microbial-explicit model,the CLM-Microbe,to simulate CH_(4)flux in three major natural wetlands in northeastern China.The CLM-Microbe model was able to capture the seasonal variation of gross primary productivity(GPP),dissolved organic carbon(DOC),and CH_(4)flux.The CLM-Microbe model explained more than 40%of the variation in GPP and CH_(4)flux across sites.Marsh wetlands had higher CH_(4)flux than mountain peatlands.Ebullition dominated the CH_(4)transport pathway in all three wetlands.The methanogenesis dominates while methanotroph makes a minor contribution to the CH_(4)flux,making all wetlands a CH_(4)source.Sensitivity analysis indicated that microbial growth and death rates are the key factors governing CH_(4)emission and vegetation physiological properties(flnr)and maintenance respiration predominate GPP variation.Explicitly simulating microbial processes allows genomic information to be incorporated,laying a foundation for better predicting CH_(4)dynamics under the changing environment.

To clarify the responses of plant functional traits to nitrogen(N) enrichment, we investigated the whole-plant traits(plant height and aboveground biomass), leaf morphological(specific leaf area(SLA) and leaf dry mass content(LDMC)) and chemical traits(leaf N concentration(LNC) and leaf phosphorus(P) concentration(LPC)) of Deyeuxia angustifolia and Glyceria spiculosa following seven consecutive years of N addition at four rates(0 g N/(m2·yr), 6 g N/(m2·yr), 12 g N/(m2·yr) and 24 g N/(m2·yr)) in a freshwater marsh in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China. The results showed that, for both D. angustifolia and G. spiculosa, N addition generally increased plant height, leaf, stem and total aboveground biomass, but did not cause changes in SLA and LDMC. Moreover, increased N availability caused an increase in LNC, and did not affect LPC. Thus, N addition decreased leaf C∶N ratio, but caused an increase in leaf N∶P ratio, and did not affect leaf C∶P ratio. Our results suggest that, in the mid-term, elevated N loading does not alter leaf morphological traits, but causes substantial changes in whole-plant traits and leaf chemical traits in temperate freshwater wetlands. These may help to better understand the effects of N enrichment on plant functional traits and thus ecosystem structure and functioning in freshwater wetlands.

Nitrogen (4, 10, 20 and 40g/m2) and phosphorus (1.2, 4.8 and 9.6g/m2) were applied to tanks to evaluating the effects of N and P additions on plant tissue nutrition and the biomass of two freshwater wetland plants in the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China, namely Carex lasiocarpa and Carex meyeriana. For C. lasiocarpa, the total N concentration (TN) of plant tissues under the treatment of 10g/m2 was lower compared with the other N treatments. Initially, C. lasiocarpa exhibited a significant increase of biomass as compared with the control value, reaching the maximum of 31.20±4.01g/tank under the treatment of 10g/m2, and then dropped to 18.02±1.53g/tank under the treatment of 40g/m2. For C. meyeriana, TN generally increased with increasing amount of N applied. High N applied produced more aboveground biomass than low N applied. C. meyeriana, as the accompanying species, can adapt itself to the wetland enriched by N, and it may replace C. lasiocarpa as the dominant species of wetland. The total P concentration (TP) in tissues of C. lasiocarpa increased with P addition. The aboveground biomass of C. lasiocarpa increased with P addition, and it changed from 18.77±3.29g/tank to 46.03±3.95g/tank. However, TP of tissue may accelerate the C. meyeriana development under the treatment of 1.2g/m2. P accumulation contributes to the dominance of C. lasiocarpa but limits the production of C. meyeriana, and the latter may disappear gradually from the wetland enriched by P. Increased input of N and P might have an influence on wetland plant community composition and structure, so the effects of nutrient inputs and accumulation should be considered to protect the freshwater wetland.

To examine the effects of microtopography on the stoichiometry of carbon(C), nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in mosses along the hummock-hollow gradient in boreal peatlands, we investigated species-level C?N, C?P and N?P ratios of five mosses(Sphagnum magellanicum, S. perichaetiale, S. palustre, S. girgensohnii and Aulacomnium palustre) in the hummocks, hollows and their intermediate zones, and then assessed community-level spatial patterns in a boreal ombrotrophic peatland of north of the Great Xing'an Mountain, Northeast China. The results show that at the species level, C?N, C?P and N?P ratios of the selected Sphagnum mosses remained stable in the hummock-hollow complexes due to unchanged C, N and P concentrations, whereas the non-Sphagnum moss(A. palustre) in the hummocks and intermediate zones had lower P concentrations and thus greater C?P ratios than that in the hollows. At the community level, moss N concentration and C?N ratio remained constant along the hummock-hollow gradient, whereas hummocks and intermediate zones had higher community-level moss C?P and N?P ratios than hollows because of greater C and lower P concentrations. These findings imply that the effects of microtopography on moss C?N?P stoichiometry are scale-dependent and reveal spatial heterogeneity in C and nutrient dynamics. These results provide a more comprehensive understanding of biogeochemical cycles in boreal peatlands.

West Jilin Province" in this paper means Zhenlai, Baicheng, Taonan, Da′an, Tongyu, Fuyu, songyuan, Qian′an, Changling, also includes Gongzhuling, Shuangliao, Lishu, Siping and Nong′an which have been suffered from desertification. In west Jilin Province there are three sand zones passing through, they are Xiang(Xianghai) Wu(Ulan Tug) sand zone, Hai Feng sand zone, and Tao′er River right bank sand zone. The desertification area of west Jilin Province is 819 100 ha, making up 12.5% of the total land area. Among desertification types, in Jilin Province light desertification is the major, then is medium dersertification, hevey desertification is the least.According to the comparison of the interpretation results of the Landsat images of the 1980s and the 1990s by remote sensing and GIS techniques, it can be seen that the desertification area in west Jilin Province basically didn′t change on the whole, only increased 6130 ha, making up 0.8% of the desertification area, change scale is less than 1%. Evidently, desertification is controlled mostly, but some areas are continuing deterioration.The desertification process of China can be divided into three types according to origin nature, they are sandy steppe desertification, fixed sand area(sand land) activation and dunes transfer invasion.Reasons of desertification of West Jilin Province are analyzed, they include natural factors(such as material source factors, chimate factors) and artificial factors(such as destroying grass to reclaim, steppe decreasing greatly, illegally feeling shelter forest stands, constructing reservoir to influence eco environment etc.). Some suggestions are put forward as follows: establishing the social project for ecological reconstruction of degenerated land; intensifying planning and management of land use, reverting farmland into forestland or pasture in a planned way. The key desertification control is to depend mainly on policy and management, then control techniques.

Ultraviolet（UV） radiation has significant effects on ecosystems, environments, and human health, as well as atmospheric processes and climate change. Two ultraviolet radiation datasets are described in this paper. One contains hourly observations of UV radiation measured at 40 Chinese Ecosystem Research Network stations from 2005 to 2015. CUV3 broadband radiometers were used to observe the UV radiation, with an accuracy of 5%, which meets the World Meteorology Organization＇s measurement standards. The extremum method was used to control the quality of the measured datasets. The other dataset contains daily cumulative UV radiation estimates that were calculated using an all-sky estimation model combined with a hybrid model. The reconstructed daily UV radiation data span from 1961 to 2014. The mean absolute bias error and root-mean-square error are smaller than 30% at most stations, and most of the mean bias error values are negative, which indicates underestimation of the UV radiation intensity. These datasets can improve our basic knowledge of the spatial and temporal variations in UV radiation. Additionally, these datasets can be used in studies of potential ozone formation and atmospheric oxidation, as well as simulations of ecological processes.

The species diversity at the regeneration stage, inflenced by different water levels, is important for community composition in the later growing season.Regeneration diversity of Carex lasiocarpa community under different water levels was studied at two stages, recruitment and adult, in the Sanjiang Plain, Heilongjiang Province, China.The results showed that, at the two growing stages, important value of C.lasiocarpa population and species richness of the community decreased with the increasing water level, while the Simpson and Shannon-Wiener diversity indexes and Pielou evenness index increased.Under different water levels, community diversities were higher at the recruitment stage, while population important values of C.lasiocarpa were higher at the adult stage.Indexes in vegetation evaluation must be chosen prudentially for successful restoration and effective management of wetlands, and especially for wetland restoration, the optimal time should be selected according to the restoration objectives and costs.

The reaction of PdCl2 in water with 2-hydroxypropane-1, 3-diaminetetraacetic acid (HPDTA) gave the complex Pd (C11H16N2O9)·1. 5H2O, which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction data show that Pd ( Ⅱ ) is coordinated by two nitrogen atoms and two car-boxylic oxygen atoms. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic space group Pc with a = 1. 1240(2), b=1. 1183(2), c=1. 2597(3) nm, β=96. 33(2)°V=1. 5737(6) nm3, Z = 4, R= 0.038. The structure contains two crystallographically independent molecules which have slightly different orientations and are connected by hydrogen bonds.
