Body size induced changes in metabolic carbon of soil nematodes under N deposition and precipitation regime change in a temperate grassland

Background Global climate change has resulted in precipitation regimes exhibiting an increasing trend in rainfall intensity but a reduction in its frequency. Nitrogen(N) deposition is a crucial component of the global N cycling. Nematode body size is a trait that responds to climate change and is used as a standard trait-based indicator in soil community analysis. Variations in body size influence metabolic carbon(C). We examined the ways by which body size and metabolic C of nematodes respond to changing precipitation regimes and how N deposition regulates these responses by an 8-year manipulative *** Nematode body size was indicated by the community-weighted mean(CWM) mass. We quantified C metabolism components of soil nematodes including production C, respiration C, and corresponding C use efficiency(CUE) under different precipitation intensities and N addition in a semi-arid steppe on the mongolian Plateau. The Mantel test was used to determine the correlations between CWM, CUE and environmental factors. The partial least squares path modeling(PLS-PM) was conducted to quantify direct or indirect contributions among latent *** We found that heavy precipitation intensity increased the CWM mass of total nematodes and omnivorespredators without N addition. N addition decreased CWM mass of bacterivores across all the precipitation intensity treatments. Stronger precipitation intensities might be favorable for nematode production and respiration C. Variations in the nematode CWM mass drove the CUE to change with N *** Our findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying nematode body size and C metabolism, and highlight that explorative studies, such as manipulative experiments, are needed to identify traits underlying size-related effects and to investigate how they affect CUE of nematodes. The use of antibacterial dressings is crucial in the prevention and treatment of wound infection in emergency ***,the efficacy of dressings is compromised by long-term storage or exposure to harsh ***,an ultrastable in-situ silver nanoparticle dressing(AgSNP@CD)was prepared for effective prevention and treatment of wound infection in *** fabrication process of AgSNP@CD is simple,suitable for large-scale *** to the strong interaction between the in-situ synthesized AgNPs and the cotton fabric,AgSNP@CD owned remarkable stability,thus retaining its antimicrobial efficacy even after long-term storage(up to 2 years)and under extreme conditions(damp heat,low temperatures,low-oxygen,water immersion,acid-alkali erosion).Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated the extraordinary antibacterial efficacy and stability of AgSNP@CD,facilitating infection prevention and wound healing in extreme *** particular,AgSNP@CD exhibited a superior treatment effect on severe bacteria-infected trauma and can prevent the occur-rence of sepsis *** exceptional stability and antibacterial efficacy of AgSNP@CD under complex and extreme conditions make it a well-suited dressing strategy for the prevention and treatment of wound infection in emergency.

Pien Tze Huang(PZH),a class-1 nationally protected traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),has been used to treat liver diseases such as hepatitis;however,the effect of PZH on the progression of sepsis is ***,we reported that PZH attenuated lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced sepsis in mice and reduced LPS-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in macrophages by inhibiting the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)***,PZH stimulated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3)phosphorylation to induce the expression of A20,which could inhibit the activation of NF-κB and MAPK *** of the bile acid(BA)receptor G protein-coupled bile acid receptor 1(TGR5)in macrophages abolished the effects of PZH on STAT3 phosphorylation and A20 induction,as well as the LPS-induced inflammatory response,suggesting that BAs in PZH may mediate its anti-inflammatory effects by activating ***,deprivation of BAs in PZH by cholestyramine resin reduced the effects of PZH on the expression of phosphorylated-STAT3 and A20,the activation of NF-κB and MAPK signalling,and the production of proinflammatory cytokines,whereas the addition of BAs to cholestyramine resin-treated PZH partially restored the inhibitory effects on the production of proinflammatory ***,our study identifies BAs as the effective components in PZH that activate TGR5-STAT3-A20 signalling to ameliorate LPS-induced sepsis.

Giant low-field reversible magnetocaloric effect at liquid helium temperature of niobium and iron co-substituted EuTiO_(3) compounds

Giant magnetocaloric effect(MCE)materials in the liquid helium temperature region have attracted a lot of attention in the field of low-temperature magnetic refrigeration(MR).In this study,a series of niobium(Nb)and iron(Fe)co-substituted EuTiO_(3) perovskites with cubic structure(space group pm3m)was successfully fabricated,and their magnetic properties as well as cryogenic magnetocaloric effects were investigated in *** expected,the introduction of Nb and Fe can significantly modulate the magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric effect of the EuTiO_(3) *** increasing Fe concentration,two local minima corresponding to the AFM-FM magnetic phase transition near 5.0 K and FM-PM transition near 10 K with no hysteresis in the thermomagnetic curves are observed,which is attributed to an enhancement of FM *** the same time,the gradually widened-ΔSM-T curves and the two peaks with a broad shoulder lead to considerable refrigeration capacity(RC).With the field change ofΔH=2 T,the calculated values of-ΔS_(M)^(max) for the EuTi_(0.9375-x)Nb_(0.0625)Fe_(x)O_(3)(x=0.075,0.1,0.125,0.15)compounds are 24.2,17.6,14.5 and 14.0 J/(kg·K),*** corresponding RC values were calculated to be 144.6,138.3,151.2 and 159 J/kg,***,the values of-ΔS_(M)^(max) for EuTi_(0.8625)Nb_(0.0625)Fe_(0.075)O_(3) are 8.6 and 15.1 J/(kg·K)under low field changes of 0.5 and 1 T,*** giant low-field reversible magnetocaloric effect makes them attractive candidates for magnetic refrigeration in the liquid helium temperature region.

Prediction and validation of diffusive uptake rates for indoor volatile organic compounds in axial passive samplers

The diffusive uptake rate is essential for using passive samplers to measure indoor volatile organic compounds(VOCs).The traditional theoretical model of passive samplers requires available regression formulas of uptake rates and physicochemical properties of adsorbents to predict the uptake ***,it is difficult to obtain the uptake rates of different VOCs under different sampling periods,and it is also difficult to obtain the physical parameters of adsorbents accurately and *** study provides a reliable numerical prediction method of diffusive uptake rates of *** modeling was based on the standard automated thermal desorption(ATD)tubes packed with Tenax TA and the mass transfer process during *** experimental determinations of toluene uptake rate are carried out to verify the prediction *** uptake rates of typical indoor VOCs are obtained from the literature to calibrate the key apparent parameters in the model by statistical regression *** predicted model can provide the VOC diffusive uptake rates under different sampling duration with an average deviation of less than 5%.This study can provide the basis for fast and accurate prediction of diffusive uptake rates for various VOC pollutants in built environments.

Stars with initial masses in the range of 8-25 solar masses are thought to end their lives as hydrogen-rich supernovae(SNeⅡ).Based on the pre-explosion images of Hubble space telescope(HST)and Spitzer space telescope,we place tight constraints on the progenitor candidate of type IIP SN 2023ixf in Messier *** of the spectral energy distribution(SED)of its progenitor with dusty stellar spectral models results in an estimation of the effective temperature as 3091+*** luminosity is estimated as lg(L/L⊙)~4.83,consistent with a red supergiant(RSG)star with an initial mass of 12-1+2M⊙.The derived mass loss rate(6×10^(-6)-9×10^(-6)M⊙yr^(-1))is much lower than that inferred from the flash spectroscopy of the SN,suggesting that the progenitor experienced a sudden increase in mass loss when approaching the final *** the infrared bands,significant deviation from the range of regular RSGs in the color-magnitude diagram and period-luminosity space of the progenitor star indicates enhanced mass loss and dust *** with new evidence of polarization at the early phases of SN 2023ixf,such a violent mass loss is likely a result of binary interaction.

Goat casein hydrolysates alleviated insomnia in mice via modulating the level of neurotransmitters and the composition of gut microbiota

Insomnia is associated with neurotransmitters and intestinal dysbiosis. Though studies have demonstrated the ameliorative effects of milk hydrolysates on insomnia， the underlying mechanisms require further exploration. In this study， we investigated how papain hydrolysates of goat casein (CPH) and whey protein (WPH) affected mice’s sleeplessness. Here， we show that CPH effectively improved the total sleep time in 12 h and restoring neurotransmitters (5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)， γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)， dopamine (DA)， and norepinephrine (NE)) in mice. Further gut microbiota analysis revealed a significant increase in the relative abundance of Helicobacter and Escherichia-Shigella and a decrease in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in the insomnia model mice (model). Compared to the model group， both CPH and WPH significantly increased the relative abundance of Akkermansia and Lactobacillus while lowering the relative abundance of Helicobacter and Escherichia-Shigella. Notably， while diazepam (DZP) increased mouse sleep duration， it also increased the relative abundance of Colidextribacter， Parasutterella， Muribaculaceae， and Prevotella. Additionally， the gene expression and protein expression of GABAAreceptor， cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB)， and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were upregulated in the hypothalamus. We also discovered a link between intestinal gut microbiota and neurotransmitters. Overall， our results suggest that goat milk hydrolysates， especially CPH， can effectively improve insomnia， providing a theoretical basis for further experimentation and individualized designs.
